Worst British Sitcoms of all time!

In your opinion what is the worst British sitcom of all time.

My definition of Sitcom, is a comedy that prime purpose is to be “funny”. For Example shows such as Being Human, Fleabag, my mad fat dairy, Brasic and Jonathan Creek don’t count as whilst they contain humour they are not what most would consider a sitcom as they contain to much of a serious undertone. (Not saying these are bad shows, I just see them refer to as sitcoms a lot when they technically are not)

@Pelleas ha ha no unfortunately I am not. Not going to lie however, it wouldn’t be a job that I would be against doing- I bet making those programs are really satisfying Grin

Strange how completely subjective comedy is. I never really liked sitcoms in general, other than the obvious parodies. My thing was more the sketch comedies - The Fast Show etc, and the 'Comic Strip Presents', in particular 'Mr Jolly Lives Next Door' and 'The Yob'.

For me stand-out sitcoms are Red Dwarf (how CAN that appear on the list? 'The Polymorph' had me rolling on the floor!), Blackadder and anything Rik and Ade ever did.

Agree with PP about the Royle family, much as I loved Caroline Aherne otherwise, and Carla Lane. Dire.

Oh, and Jimmy Perry and David Croft can get in the sea!

Why do so many people hate Mrs Brown's Boys? My husband and I absolutely love it, I think it's brilliant, especially when they leave the mistakes in and the swearing. I love All Round To Mrs Browns as well. We went to see the stage show for our wedding anniversary a few years ago as well. Was truly the best night out I've ever had, our faces ached from how much we laughed and smiled. I think people misunderstand the humour quite a bit. It's completely different to everything else.

Most of the ones that go on and on and on lose their fun IMO.

I was a bit sad they only did one series of Beast - but I think I only found that funny because I worked in a vets and it was more true to life than people appreciated

Mrs B Boys is filmed in Glasgow

Agree - the crudeness of the expression 'nudie prod games' and the overt fawning over the questionable Cliff Richard was enough to ensure I never again watched another episode.

I'm a huge sitcom fan just watching some on forces TV yet there were 3 I didn't laugh at and 1 I never got the appeal with close to home nightingales and may to December and I never got what was funny about one foot in the grave

EsmeShelby · 04/09/2022 17:35

Bread. Awful. But popular for years.

the80sweregreat · 04/09/2022 17:42

Mrs browns boys

LetHimHaveIt · 04/09/2022 17:57

Ever Decreasing Circles was a masterpiece.

Northernsouloldies · 04/09/2022 18:27

Last of the summer wine... Utter crap, even the theme tune pisses me off.

MintJulia · 04/09/2022 19:00

Sorry! with Ronnie Corbett - just cringeworthy

And Mrs Brown's Boys.

JaneJeffer · 04/09/2022 19:25

Dad's Army

charabang · 04/09/2022 20:01

Last of the Summer Wine
Allo Allo
Mrs Browns Boys
Bread
Father Ted (I know it's beloved)
Fawlty Towers ( Too OTT)

Novum · 04/09/2022 22:07

My mother thought On the Buses was hilarious. I hated it, it used every cheap racist/misogynist stereotype going.

HRTQueen · 04/09/2022 22:30

I find Mrs Brown’s Boys funny it’s so stupid

I also find Citizen Khan funny

Early Not Going Out was funny especially with Tim Vine recent episodes are not

I like Rising Damp too

I have never found Red Dwarf funny

RedRec · 05/09/2022 11:34

Fawlty Towers. Knockabout, unfunny crap.
Last of the Summer Wine - see above.
Miranda - ditto.

Have just realised I hate all slapstick! A revelation.

Someone upthread mentioned Watching. About the woman with the birdwatching boyfriend with motorbike / side car. (Boyfriend actor, now ancient, much later appeared in Corrie as Roy Cropper's long lost brother / Nina's dad).
But anyway, there was a line in it that had me creasing with laughter for about a day. Someone was talking about a leather sofa being 'distressed' and the Liza Tarbuck character said "so would you be if I sat on you". Might have been a you had to be there moment but it never left me Grin

RedRec · 05/09/2022 11:35

Don't know where the bike came from on my post below. It was supposed to be a grin.

No idea why this two year old thread has been revived.

Worst so called comedy is Mrs Browns Boys. The best argument for abolishing the licence fee.

Winterlight · 05/09/2022 11:56

The Likely Lads.

The Royle Family. Utterly grim.

This. Less funny than a terminal illness.

BeggarsMeddle · 05/09/2022 13:34

Worst one that never went on to grace our screens. About 30 yrs ago I sat in the audience - pilot show for a new comedy. I'd misheard the show's title... so ended up watching 'Heil Honey, I'm home.' Excruciatingly unfunny.

Hyacinth2 · 05/09/2022 17:24

oNG the blue punch with the banana in it Xmas edition of Royale family - priceless

Didn't realise it was old so I went back and see I put Dad's Army back then as well Grin

The Royle Family is genius.
