Worst British Sitcoms of all time!

In your opinion what is the worst British sitcom of all time.

My definition of Sitcom, is a comedy that prime purpose is to be “funny”. For Example shows such as Being Human, Fleabag, my mad fat dairy, Brasic and Jonathan Creek don’t count as whilst they contain humour they are not what most would consider a sitcom as they contain to much of a serious undertone. (Not saying these are bad shows, I just see them refer to as sitcoms a lot when they technically are not)

Outnumbered, whiny wet family.

ALongHardWinter · 11/04/2020 20:34

There were a couple of sitcoms with Jim Davidson in in the 80's. I can't stand the bloke and couldn't stand his sitcoms either. I think one was called 'Up the elephant and round the castle' and the other one was 'Bottle Boys'.

Pinkarsedfly · 11/04/2020 20:46

For some reason the theme tune to Bottle Boys has been stuck in my head for the best part of 40 years.

I've got a real soft spot for 2.4 Children. Definitely not upper middle class, with Gary Olsen's character being a builder, the mum working in a sandwich shop/catering, family living in flats etc (sorry to be a pedant!)

AngelaScandal · 11/04/2020 21:34

Oh look I’m in a forced lockdown and ‘All around To Mrs Brown’ just came on and I’m out of wine.

Shit! Me too!

Bottle boys bottle boys, up with the lark, who cares if it’s rainy, who cares if it’s dark
Something something something you hear the noise of the rattle of the bottles of the bottle boys

There’s brain cells been dedicated to storing that bollocks since I was at school. Two degrees and twenty plus years of work, and that’s the best use my brain has for those cells?

Threelionsandalioness · 11/04/2020 21:42

There was one with the guy from thin blue line and Kathy Burke (I think) bright ginger hair red glasses???
Absolutely fabulous
Mrs. Brown
And outnumbered x

Gimme gimme gimme

Oh I just remembered Game On, that was crap too

MigginsMs · 11/04/2020 22:07

Also the one with Dennis Waterman and the housekeeper called Mrs Wembley, that was rotten too

There are loads I liked when I was young but would think were awful now. May to December, Fresh Fields, birds of a feather etc

RuffleCrow · 11/04/2020 22:10

Last of the Summer Wine! Even the thought sends me into an '80s biscuit and tea induced coma on my grandma's armchair.

TimeAintNothing · 11/04/2020 22:18

Gimme Gimme Gimme was painful.

My mam used to watch one on a Sunday evening in the 80s, I can't remember the name but it was something to do with birdwatching, the male lead was a bit of a drip and the female lead was a stereotype of neon stilettos and annoying voice. We used to moan when she put it on and would eventually get sent to bed for mimicking the characters Grin

NigellaAwesome · 11/04/2020 22:22

Are You being served

Frank Spencer

Worzel Gummidge

Last of the Summer Wine

Hi-Di-Hi

Basically anything from mid-seventies to mid-eighties. Yes Minister was a notable exception.

LandOfAThousandJumpers · 11/04/2020 22:24

Some Mothers Do Have Em

Just depressing

LandOfAThousandJumpers · 11/04/2020 22:25

@RuffleCrow

GrinGrinGrin My parents used to watch this 🙈

LandOfAThousandJumpers · 11/04/2020 22:27

@MigginsMs

I used to love May to December as a child... was it all just about an accountant shagging his secretary or something?! Bet it was absolute shit 🙈Grin

LandOfAThousandJumpers · 11/04/2020 22:30

@Notredamn

I had completely forgotten about 2.4 children!

Was the 70s/80s/90s the zenith (nadir?) of the primetime sitcom? I feel like they’re not the thing anymore? Yet my whole childhood is coming back to me in this thread. Did they get replaced by reality tv?

That was Watching and yes, it was terrible. Woman goes out with birdwatcher bloke with a motorbike & sidecar and has a sister (Liza Tarbuck: things definitely improved for her after that) married to a rich bloke. At least one disapproving mother stereotype as well.

I didn’t see Liza Tarbuck after that until she was on the Big Breakfast when I discovered to my surprise that she was really funny. Such was the grey cloud of misery cast by Watching. That ran for about 56 years (I exaggerate slightly, maybe it just felt like it).

Hirsutefirs · 11/04/2020 23:06

“Watching,” yes he had a single cylinder Norton.

Pinkarsedfly · 11/04/2020 23:28

The theme tune to Watching was bloody painful.

‘I’m not blessed with charm
I bring chaos where there was calm
So the question should be
What does heeeeee
See in meeeeeeeee?’

Sounded like someone ironing a cat.

Ritascornershop · 12/04/2020 00:42

I’m surprised no-one has mentioned Birds of a Feather. Initially I didn’t mind it, but found it increasingly depressing as it went on. Sharon and Tracey were just so bloody miserable all the time and I could never work out why Dorian hated her husband so much or how she managed to have so many affairs as the character was made to look very severe.

bringincrazyback · 12/04/2020 01:30

I remembered another turkey: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Small_Problem

Satire on racism and apartheid, late '80s. Had Mike from The Young Ones in it. Got pulled pretty quickly as no one seemed to get that it was satire, or maybe just because it was crap.

bringincrazyback · 12/04/2020 01:31

The theme tune to Watching was bloody painful.

I loved Watching, it was patchy but there was something touching about it. However, I agree the theme song was dire!

StormBaby · 12/04/2020 01:47

My Hero has to be the absolute worst! Can't stand The Office or Miranda either.
