Worst British Sitcoms of all time!

In your opinion what is the worst British sitcom of all time.

My definition of Sitcom, is a comedy that prime purpose is to be “funny”. For Example shows such as Being Human, Fleabag, my mad fat dairy, Brasic and Jonathan Creek don’t count as whilst they contain humour they are not what most would consider a sitcom as they contain to much of a serious undertone. (Not saying these are bad shows, I just see them refer to as sitcoms a lot when they technically are not)

Upstart Crow. What a load of shit.

Pinkarsedfly · 11/04/2020 13:25

Oh, and I’m a big Shakespeare fan (English teacher).

Still hate it.

Fleamaker123 · 11/04/2020 13:40

Hi de Hi was chronic, it was off as soon as the annoying theme tune started

Some Mothers Do Ave Em, remember the roller skates episode, that was mildly amusing I suppose

Dad's Army, never understood the arrows at the beginning

It Ain't Half Hot Mum, what the hell was that all about
God we watched some crap in the 70's

Last of the Summer Wine was depressing

Only When I Laugh

Citizen Khan

I loved Ever Decreasing Circles, Don't Wait Up and the obvious classics

Oh I've just remembered the worst ever.. The Likely Lads, I hated that with a passion, especially the theme tune.

Scarletoharaseyebrows · 11/04/2020 14:04

Brittas Empire WAS truly awful

I'd entirely forgotten Never the Twain.

Ab Fab was funny for a few episodes.

I think programs like the royale family and phoenix nights are funnier if you can relate. I've spent years performing in working men's clubs around the north of England and drinking in my local liberal club... phoenix nights is a perfect depiction of that life.

When I moved to the UK in the 80 and was homesick someone told me to watch Bread 'for a good laugh" - epic humour fail, on a par with Mrs.Soddin Bown's Boys.

Dad's Army, never understood the arrows at the beginning

You might want to look up Dunkirk

Viviennemary · 11/04/2020 14:55

The German advance. I didnt think much about them till later.

Fleamaker123 · 11/04/2020 15:02

Well yes I understand what the arrows mean now... Hmm

1forAll74 · 11/04/2020 15:09

Mrs Browns crap.
Not going out.
May to December,( but I have to lie to a neighbour of mine, and say I liked it, as she was a character in it.!

WiryTail · 11/04/2020 15:17

My husband is Irish and he hates MBB.
My Mum loves it.
I can't watch it.

KitMarlowesCodpieceOfThigh · 11/04/2020 15:49

Steptoe and Son. I just can't find it funny. Steptoe is revolting and his son is a wimp. It actually makes me feel sick.

Mrs Brown's Boys. Utter nonsense.

The thing with Michael Crawford as the wussy, stupid bloke - hate it.

Mr. Bean is bollocks.

The Royle Family - hideous people slobbed in front of their TV - why?

Keeping Up Appearances - everyone just let themselves be railroaded by Hyacinth instead of laughing in her face and telling her to fuck off.

Only Fools and Horses - another vile set of people.

Anything with Leonard Rossiter in it - I just find him deeply creepy and unappealing.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/04/2020 16:17

Not going out.
Painful.

HennyPenny4 · 11/04/2020 16:21

I found most of these progs funny at the time - Steptoe was black humour I've forgotten the correct term for sad/funny stuff. like Charlie Chaplin.
Michael Crawford was a bit of a simpleton, not acceptable now really. Hyacinth Bucket was a hit worldwide - a recognisable character everywhere.
The whole point of Rising Damp was that Rossiter was creepy but the tenants, often inadvertently, got one over him.
The last of the summer wine seemed a favourite with the older generation at the time it came out. So probably not going to work now.
Phoenix nights and the Royle family were v funny if slightly shocking.

Pinkarsedfly · 11/04/2020 17:01

I remember when a lot of BBC sitcoms were just unbelievably upper-middle class.

Things like Life Without George, The Mistress, Butterflies, That’s Love, 2.4 Children, Me and My Girl...

I used to be fascinated by the salad bowls in the middle of the table and the fact that ‘supper’ wasn’t a digestive biscuit and a cup of cocoa, but an actual meal Grin

Iamthewombat · 11/04/2020 17:05

Dad's Army, never understood the arrows at the beginning

I’m confused. Are you saying that Dad’s Army was inherently a bad sitcom because you didn’t understand the opening titles depicting modern history? Are sitcoms considered poor if children (I assume that you were a child when you first watched it) can’t understand the context?

Mrs Brown’s Boys popularity is now explained!

Iamthewombat · 11/04/2020 17:06

Michael Crawford was a bit of a simpleton, not acceptable now really.

Agreed. It would be considered as unacceptable as Benny Hill now, although both had their funny moments.

Pinkarsedfly · 11/04/2020 17:10

I feel the same about Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory as I do about Frank Spencer. Can’t manage to watch it.

Nolie100 · 11/04/2020 17:13

Citizen Khan.

Just awful, I genuinely think if a non Asian had written it, it would have been dismissed as racist tosh. But as Adil Ray is Asian the stereotypical accent, the head wobbling, the cliched jokes were all deemed acceptable. I know Adil Ray has no comedy background, and was a DJ on the BBC Asian Network playing dance music when he got a break emailing other BBC buddies for a break.

Who you know and all that.....

Mr Khan- wtf that's doing being in air in this day and age is beyond me... having said that, I loved goodness gracious me.
