But I have subscribed, and this was my message

Done @JustineMumsnet

Delighted to help - I reckon I get a fiver a month’s entertainment from Mumsnet, and have had it for free for all these years.

I also work in an industry funded by ad revenues - let’s hope we all make it through this.

OP posts:

turns out the quote feature has been in place for at least 6 years.

So we've all spent at least the last 6 years putting silly *'s around text to show its a quote when there was already the capability to actively quote posters built into the site. Why am I not the least bit suprised by this development...

Wtf?Confused

I love the way that's dropped into the thread without any hint as to how to use it.

We cannot use it, surely that's the point being made? The PP noted that MN have been using it since 2014 when responding to posters but we've never had access to it even though its clearly been possible for at least that long.

It would have been incredibly useful rather than relying on the * to highlight quoted text or using @ to show who you were responding to.

Ah ! I see - dim moment there.

Personally I like MN the way it is. My grandkids would never believe half the things I tell them about how chatrooms worked in the 90s otherwise.

Pertella · 11/04/2020 13:03

The lack of quoting is annoying. A lot of the time someone just says something like "I agree with xxxx" and you've got no idea what xxxx actually said.

Eggcited · 11/04/2020 13:12

Personally I like MN the way it is.

I don't get this, you yourself have used the to quote me, so why the aversion to changing to a quote feature? Confused

SerendipityJane · 11/04/2020 13:14

I guess it's been true all these years. My sense of humour is weird. Looks like I have a lot of apologies to make ....

bruffin · 11/04/2020 13:25

I also like the transparency of no edit button.
But this is the least transparent site, The Name Change facility is a huge problem makes it not transparent, along with the very poor and inconsistant moderating.
Loads of other free sites give edit features so £5 a month is a rip off.
MN had a cheek to ask for money before they sorted out a lot of their problems.

MamaMeeAh · 11/04/2020 13:35

They rushed it out, that seems apparent. I don’t understand why, when they said the the FAQs they were going to roll this out later this year anyway, that a lot of these things hadn’t been thought through properly. I think it has backfired big time because companies now are being assessed on their culture during the pandemic and I don’t think the way this has been touted reflects well on Mn. I particularly dislike the folksy language that creates a sense of letting the side down and taking more than you put in if you don’t sub. As you can see from some posters they have felt a sense of obligation to sub. I think that’s wrong.

Eggcited · 11/04/2020 13:59

This is a very valid point

I don’t think the way this has been touted reflects well on Mn.

Agreed. Just like data breaches this association will be remembered years from now.

Quarantino · 11/04/2020 14:48

I doubt I'd post on here if I couldn't use the name change function. Who'd want years of posts about every aspect of your life all linked together? It would be a disaster for privacy. I know it potentially allows people to troll more easily but i think it's a price worth paying. Also I know you could create multiple accounts but that's a ballache and it's overall a good thing it's encouraged to name change instead. Mods can see who's namechanging.

SoapIsYourFriend · 11/04/2020 14:50

Presumably they don't want us all to subscribe as then they won't be able to sell advertising space at all if there is a promise of no ads ...

bruffin · 11/04/2020 14:55

Itscthe same on any boards, the only other board I was on that allowed name changing was parentcentre was closed down because it had a huge problem with trolls and fetishist, a few who migrated onto here

PleaseStopCrying · 11/04/2020 14:58

if there is a promise of no ads ...

Cunningly they said it would be fewer ads for premium not no ads at all. Although how many fewer equates to is anyone's guess. Technically they could remove just 1 ad and they have stuck to what they had promised.

MamaMeeAh · 11/04/2020 15:23

I think the ability to name change is important to for privacy reasons. Some of the people on the new site have admitted to starting fake threads. I just don’t understand why anyone would want to do that? Bizarre. I do feel MN is better run than most sites, every business screws up now and then but you have to learn from your mistakes. I feel like they didn’t appreciate how much trust they lost with some of the data breaches.

magimedi · 11/04/2020 15:51

Interesting to see that Gransnet have not been asked to pay - they've been asked if they want a premium service but no begging post - as yet.

bruffin · 11/04/2020 16:47

It really isnt

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/04/2020 16:52

No it really isn't,I agree bruffin

Seeitsortit · 11/04/2020 17:18

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor I too would be interested in a link........

MamaMeeAh · 11/04/2020 17:21

I don't think any links would last long (and you may well get banned for posting them) but alternatives are discussed at length on this thread

Vicbarbarkley · 11/04/2020 17:39

I am not going to say this correctly, so please try to understand what I am saying 😁

Under the paid for regime, a journalist pays for the super dooper membershio and posts a totally inflammatory post. Several people jump on very quickly to respond.
The journalist then uses the super power enabled by having money to edit their post, making it reasonable.
Yes, we may well be able to see the original post, but I very much doubt when it appears on the DM, Sun or Daily Mirror website that will be available.

MN is brilliant becuse of the cross section of the populace (sp?), take that away because of the two tier society being created and it will become an echo chamber of middle class angst.

Yes, I know everyone can still post, yes, I understand moderating will be unchanged, but, in time, it will be patently obvious who has paid and who has not. And if it isnt obvious, then what are you paying for???

I can afford to pay. I do check into mumsnet several times a day. I do enjoy it, mainly as a lurker.

Will I pay for it? No. Posters generate the income. Without us there is nothing to sell.

Take a look at Companies House for more information. This is not a teeny tiny company on their knees.

Eggcited · 11/04/2020 17:43

Well unless they have ninja skills then this isn't going to happen. Justine herself said it would be a 15 second edit.

Vicbarbarkley · 11/04/2020 17:53

Eggcited apologies then, i did not see that confirmed. I justbsaw that there would be an edit button.

SunshineCake · 11/04/2020 17:58

You don't need to use the preview button to check your post before you post it..
