But I have subscribed, and this was my message

Done @JustineMumsnet

Delighted to help - I reckon I get a fiver a month’s entertainment from Mumsnet, and have had it for free for all these years.

I also work in an industry funded by ad revenues - let’s hope we all make it through this.

It's fascinating how many MN posters clearly only ever use MN ... one reason why MNHQ want to hang onto them - clearly a unique userbase

Eh? I dont only use MN.

Not sure what your point is?

PleaseStopCrying · 11/04/2020 08:36

It's fascinating how many MN posters clearly only ever use MN .

Isn't it just. I'm always amazed when people say an edit button will be abused. Yes some will possibly emit or add to their posts but not one other forum I've used or been on seems to have a problem managing edited posts.

It's only here where there seems to be any hysterical concern about a feature which has been a staple of most forums for 20 odd years.

Ginger1982 · 11/04/2020 08:40

I have the app on iPhone and no issues with ads or anything like that so I'm not paying £5 for an edit button.

daisychain01 · 11/04/2020 08:40

Someone has set up a chat forum for absolutely £zero, in a couple of hours using freely available web software, including all the features that seem to have eluded this site. Edit, quote, emojis.

Thing is, it just proves how easy it is to set something like this up. There's no mystique or hidden talent required. It certainly doesn't require £50 a year from 000s of people who've lost their jobs but all the same feel indebted to the community. MNers may be vipers but we're a good hearted lot as well.

The success of the community is down to the people (thank the person, not the park bench they're sitting on, to quote a pp) to create the content, give advice on a best efforts basis, sometimes even professional advice for free to save money for those in hardship.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 11/04/2020 08:41

Give over one of the things I like about mn is that there isnt an edit button.

Theres a lot of posters here, especially lately that deny what they said when it's in black and white.

It's a feature, I quite like. So yes, I would be disappointed it's going. Doesnt mean I dont use other sites that allow it.

Very strange connection to make.

Quarantino · 11/04/2020 08:44

You should be able to edit you post to add clearly marked text, not take away, within a timeframe. It's not complicated if you've used other forums.

Setting up any forum for free will require moderation though, otherwise you'd be hosting illegal content within minutes. Or having posting extremely restricted.

TodaysNameChange · 11/04/2020 08:48

Eh? I dont only use MN. [] Not sure what your point is?

Because MN is the only forum I can think of that doesn't have an edit feature. So posters that "can't see how it would work" either don't use other forums, or aren't very observant.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 11/04/2020 08:49

Hopefully. But not sure. I get the feeling, it wont be. Especially since they are charging for it.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 11/04/2020 08:51

Neither. It's just a feature of mn that I liked.

I didn't say, i couldn't see how it would work.

I just like that it couldnt be.

Eggcited · 11/04/2020 08:52

They said on the original begging thread it would be a 15 second edit window. Which wouldn't be very useful, even if people weren't paying for it.

VeganCow · 11/04/2020 09:02

I also like the transparency of no edit button.
I really do like that MN is pretty much the same, in layout and use, as it always was, to me that is a good thing the simplicity of it. Why do we need an edit button so much? Typos and corrected add-on posts are part of the simplicity and more make it more conversation like than perfectly edited posts.

TodaysNameChange · 11/04/2020 09:02

A much better way would be to look at how everyone else seems to cope and implement that ? Or get some software that does ?

BarbaraofSeville · 11/04/2020 09:03

Thing is, it just proves how easy it is to set something like this up

Indeed, Martin Lewis set up moneysavingexpert for £80 and sold it a few years later for £100 million. And that site doesn't even have adverts, it makes its money with commission from linking through to sales on airport parking, gas and electric or similar.

Plus the fact that the MSE ethos is all about spending as little as possible and exploiting deals as opposed to Mumsnet's much more affluent 'l want the best and don't mind paying for it' demographic, makes me think that Mumsnet must be quite badly run to not be able to exploit the value of its users without directly guilt tripping them into paying up like this.

MamaMeeAh · 11/04/2020 09:07

The ability to quote and edit posts is vast improvement. I posted something once that had identifying information in it and had to contact the mods (several times) who took an AGE to remove it. I realised straight away and could have edited it but by that time it was too late.

I get it that the brand loyalty is strong but MN are making plenty of money off us just being here, posting and clicking. Asking us to pay for the privilege without providing anything in return is pretty insulting, especially at the current time.

Eggcited · 11/04/2020 09:09

Interestingly the ability to quote posters is actually possible. Justine did it several times on the original thread. Why they don't allow us commoners to do so is baffling. We still have to use the archaic * system.

PleaseStopCrying · 11/04/2020 09:12

Simplicity is fine but if you then want to charge people you need to consider that the site is simply not up to scratch in comparison to those competitors who are not charging. This site is only as good as it's posters and right now many are feeling pretty unappreciated and frustrated by those in charge.

Additionally we dont need an edit button but for MNHQ to consider it as some sort of luxery that can only be accessed if you pay for it is laughable.

Nekoness · 11/04/2020 09:16

“MN has said less ads, not no adds. ”

Well of COURSE because MN will have 2 tiers for advertising. There’s the general public rate and then there will be a higher rate to exclusively reach their premium paying members. That elusive gullible bunch who are willing to pay to be advertised to 😂

Christ alive, people, the real money for them is going to come from being able to have a premium advertising rate and some of you are happy to pay them for it Confused

MamaMeeAh · 11/04/2020 09:17

Interestingly the ability to quote posters is actually possible. Justine did it several times on the original thread.

That is a very good point. So MN Royalty does exist after all. Maybe you have to fork out even more to get that.

They even manage to make that look clunky as well however, with the quotes taking up half a page.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/04/2020 09:17

And it's great and really shows this site up tbh. As a PP said early the glitches on the app are awful.

GalactiCat · 11/04/2020 09:21

I just use the preview function to check my posts first as you can edit in that before posting and I have adblock so I get NO ads. Paying £5 per month for fewer ads just seems pointless!

FamilyOfAliens · 11/04/2020 09:21

Yet here you are, happily using it.

While not paying Confused

CamberGirl · 11/04/2020 09:22

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor Do you have a link? Be interesting to take a look at that.

MamaMeeAh · 11/04/2020 09:23

I use the preview button as well but mistakes still happen.

Even with an edit function I still preview, because I am that kind of person Grin

Eggcited · 11/04/2020 09:30

Ok So I admit i'm bored, self isolation, not allowed out yada yada. So I searched, and turns out the quote feature has been in place for at least 6 years. Shock

Paying for less ads and an edit button is laughable. They don't even moderate well given the amount of trolls, begging threads and rejection of biology.
