But I have subscribed, and this was my message

Done @JustineMumsnet

Delighted to help - I reckon I get a fiver a month’s entertainment from Mumsnet, and have had it for free for all these years.

I also work in an industry funded by ad revenues - let’s hope we all make it through this.

Many people complaining MN charging for premium are paying premium for other place for extra feature. So what's different?

Perhaps they are already paying for other services, heck they may have even signed up for others during the pandemic. I know a lot of friends who have signed up for Disney + because of the increasing amount of time at home.

However, I can guarantee no one is paying 4.99 a month for fewer ads and a 15 second edit button on a chat forum. It 2020, those features are pretty standard across most other forums, and they don't require a payment, especially not at a time when so many families are struggling.

I won’t be paying for the privilege of contorting my language to avoid “misgendering” rapists

meonekton · 12/04/2020 09:54

But that is the whole point, Eggcited. We have a choice. And "no one is paying the premium for fewer ads or edit" is simply not true. I have seen people posting they are happy to subscribe on other thread.

I have seen people posting they are happy to subscribe on other thread.

And i've seen posters who are subscribing as they think the site will close if they don't, or they won't be able to use it. Ive also seen posters apologising that they can't afford to subscribe. Given the current situation, I think that it's bloody disgusting of MN to allow their users to feel guilty over such an unnecessary service.

meonekton · 12/04/2020 10:11

But why? It's a business, not a charity. I have no intention of paying, but felt no threat for my choice. MN is not an only place. People can choose to use it or not. If you feel threatened to pay the price you can't afford for fear of losing the place, then I think you are invested too much on virtual life, which is not very health in the first place.

You may think that, but for some this forum might be their only line of support. I think Justine's original post was quite alarmist, and some posters read into the keeping the light on as though the forums may have to close. That doesn't mean they're too invested in virtual life. It means they panicked that a site that may have provided support and escapism might no longer be there. When faced with this they acted on impulse and felt compelled to donate.

...a "service" provided primarily by posters giving budgeting information, showing women it's possible to escape abusive relationships, supporting women being bullied and harassed in the workplace. The list goes on.

It's the friend who needs to be thanked and appreciated not the park bench they're sitting on....

Whatever happened to the Mouldies website? Never ever saw that mentioned in the media Confused.

Whatever happened to the Mouldies website?

No idea.

MagicKingdomDizzy · 15/04/2020 20:53

Can someone explain the Mouldies situation to me please? I've seen it alluded to on a few threads now.
