I realise I can't go for a while so in the meantime what do other MNetters think of this city? Is it pleasant to the eye, relatively clean, many galleries, museums? Thanks for any info.

Delhicious is nice too.
Sultan is delivering now I gather, think we'll get ourselves a treat later in the week.

Shockers · 01/04/2020 21:43

I went for food at the Cornerhouse a few weeks ago- there was a good veggie selection there too. We were all (meat eaters too) pleasantly surprised. I like The Gregson for fajitas; Brew for breakfast, and Atkinsons, or the Music Room for coffee and cake. DH and the kids love the Sunday roast in The Borough.

Always open to new recommendations though!

lamppostdog · 01/04/2020 21:47

My ds is at uni there and loves it

RandomMess · 01/04/2020 21:49

We actually loved weekend brunch at Kerry's in Morecambe but they have just closed for family reasons SadSadSadSadSad

Rumour is that Booths in Scotforth is getting a refurb including cafe, proper chips Grin

lancasterlass · 01/04/2020 21:54

Well there WAS a rumour that they were building a whole new Booths so don't hold your breath!

Anyone else addicted to Lancaster P&P?

MustDust · 01/04/2020 21:59

@lancasterlass I'd heard that about Booths too, I wondered if it was so they could use the site along with the Bowling Green to build houses. I miss Booths in Torrisholme.

RandomMess · 01/04/2020 22:16

The new Booths was supposed to be a distribution centre can't see that happening...

Someone that someone knows that works in Booths Head office def said refurb - we are all wondering where a cafe can go, mezzanine floor????

FlockofGulls · 02/04/2020 07:12

Oh that would be fantastic. I think that the Booths in Keswick is one of the best supermarkets in the country.

Gosh this thread is making me so homesick. We usually spend most of the Easter break in Lancaster.

lazylinguist · 02/04/2020 07:43

there's much going on, considering it's an ancient university city

The university was built in the 1960s....

Correct, yes. So it's an ancient city with a university in it, which is precisely what I meant!

Shockers · 02/04/2020 10:17

The Booths in Garstang has a mezzanine cafe.

What’s P&P?

RandomMess · 02/04/2020 10:21

Yeah but the Garstang one is huge Confused I wondered as it's so old if they have spare stock space that could be used or spreading further onto the pavement on the corner. Someone mentioned extending into the (tiny) cat park Shock

BikeRunSki · 02/04/2020 10:44

Tiny cat park Smile

TedsFederationRep · 02/04/2020 10:51

Well, it was tiny. Some days, you'd struggle to park even a cat there Grin

I miss Booths at Scotforth. In fact, I miss Booths. Some used to call it the Waitrose of the North but that's a total calumny.

Waitrose is the Booths of the South.Grin

BikeRunSki · 02/04/2020 11:05

I live on the boundary of S/W Yorks, the land that Waitrose forgot. Friends have just moved to near Ilkley - an excuse to go to Booth’s!

Blakes77 · 02/04/2020 11:09

This is fascinating. I have never even thought to visit Lancaster (being from the less rainy side of the Pennines) but I'm saving this thread because it's going on my list of places to go after freedom comes.
Had no idea Booths were in Lancashire as well as Yorkshire!

BovaryX · 02/04/2020 11:13

Does Waitrose operate in the North at all?

RandomMess · 02/04/2020 11:18

Cat park actually quite appropriate Grin

There is a Waitrose in Preston I think.

Booths is actually better/more upmarket really. It focuses on locally produced items and a wide range of stock, also regularly wins alcohol retailer awards. It is pricey though so it's definitely one of those conscious decisions to support a more ethical retailer.

You grind your own coffee beans in store... de-lux local made cakes and ready meals.

BovaryX · 02/04/2020 11:20

Booths. Blimey, that's a blast from the past. Had a Saturday job there as a teen....

lazylinguist · 02/04/2020 11:20

Not many, BovaryX. Here is a map showing the UK Waitrose branches. There's a big empty swathe across Cumbria and Yorkshire. But that's where Booths are, so it's ok. Grin My nearesr Waitrose is 40 miles away in Preston apparently, but I've never visited it!

lazylinguist · 02/04/2020 11:21

Cross-posted with RandomMess. Yes, I much prefer Booths to Waitrose!

whitesoxx · 02/04/2020 11:56

Booths and Waitrose are miles apart! In every sense.

@RandomMess we're gutted about Kerry's too. She did so well there.

I was supposed to be at QSF at the weekend for a celebration 😞 I'll look forward to it reopening

lancasterlass · 02/04/2020 12:06

Had no idea Booths were in Lancashire as well as Yorkshire!

Cough. Booths is FROM Lancashire.

Blakes77 · 02/04/2020 12:22

Is it?? Oops!

lowlandLucky · 02/04/2020 12:29

Great place for a weekend away but not a week long visit, Carlisle is much better

rainbowww · 02/04/2020 12:31

NC as extremely outing. We've had a bit of rain today but it did bring this 🌈

While I'm here I'll recommend Saffron for Indian food if in Morecambe.
