How are you disinfecting groceries?

Can see that it’s possible to wipe down bottles/jars but how do you clean a punnet of fruit or a loaf of bread?

OP posts:
AlmightyBob · 06/03/2021 13:00

I'm not, and I never have done.

janj2301 · 06/03/2021 13:01

New have cleaned any shopping

ArcheryAnnie · 06/03/2021 13:01

Anything shelf stable (tins, packets) I leave in a carboard box in the hall for a week before putting away.

Biscuits I decant into the biscuit tin and wash my hands after.

Punnet of fruit I decant into a bowl, put the punnet in recycling, wash my hands after.

Bread I decant into a bread bag I have saved from a few weeks ago (you don't need to wash, just shake the crumbs out) and wash my hands.

Anything in a sealed plastic packet (eg sausages, sealed cheese) I wash with a dab of soap, rinse under cold water, then put in the fridge. Or I just decant into tupperware.

Sage smudge and incantations.

Snowrabbit · 06/03/2021 13:01

It's neurotic to be washing your shopping. And I think the long term risk of exposing your food to all these chemicals is really worrying. Diluted bleach on food packaging? It's insane and dangerous. Potentially carcinogenic and definitely not good to inhale all this stuff into your lungs. People have lost perspective. At an individual level, the risk of death from Covid is really small, even for those at higher risk. I understand why people with higher risk (shielding) might be anxious enough to do this, but for everyone else, it's madness. Are the Government telling us to disinfect our shopping? Is any government anywhere? This way madness lies.

GoLightlyontheEarth · 06/03/2021 13:02

I'm not. Why do you feel you need to do this?

MrsExpo · 06/03/2021 13:03

I'm not. Like others, I unpack, onto a surface in the kitchen, leave products alone for a few hours and use as normal. Wipe down surface.

I took advice on this from a friend who is a micro-biologist for a very large food manufacturer. Their job is to make sure food products get to us safely, so a better source of advice than randoms folks on an internet forum. My friend says don't bother, just do what I do and observe good hand hygiene. That's good enough for me. Somehow we've survived ...

Avidreader12 · 06/03/2021 13:05

Nope haven’t done so since last March and no plans to do so now life carries on and sooner stop doing things to increase anxiety the better

I did because of CEV husband. Took 15 minutes, no skin off my nose and it may have helped. He’s vaccinated now so I’ve eased off.

Didn’t use disinfectant or bleach, just warm soapy water for 20 seconds, like hands.

Don’t see why what I did for our peace of mind in an unknown situation should bother anyone else🤷‍♀️

Fluffycloudland77 · 06/03/2021 13:06

I’m still doing it, everything washable gets washed. Everything else is quarantined.

lockeddownandcrazy · 06/03/2021 13:06

I dont disinfect anything

SusannahSophia · 06/03/2021 13:07

Zombie thread from last March!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/03/2021 13:08

I never have and never will. DH and I talked a about it back at the beginning and I said if he wanted to wash the shopping it was down to him but don't expect any help from me, or for me to wash anything I bought. Thankfully he agreed with me!

I also use hand sanitiser as little as possible as I'm fed up with my skin flaking. I use soap and water and only use sanitiser if I really have no alternative.

1forAll74 · 06/03/2021 13:09

Not doing anything, I just bung all my stuff on the floor and work tops and then put everything away. My cats are usually sitting on the work tops, watching to see if I have stocked up on cat food, as they always recognise the cat food boxes and packets etc. Any fruit or veg is usually washed before eating or cooking it.

Dinkydody · 06/03/2021 13:11

I’m not

Pan2 · 06/03/2021 13:15

Spray some kitchen towel with a dettol mix and wipe down the outer package. No big deal or anxiety involved. Just good hygiene practice.

Fruit gets left if needs be (where it shouldn't be peeled). That's about it.

We've been vaxed this week, so we may change this a bit, but probably not for quite a while.

MacDuffsMuff · 06/03/2021 13:17

Oh I just saw my old user name on here. Grin

MacDuffsMuff · 06/03/2021 13:18

I use soap and water and only use sanitiser if I really have no alternative.

Isn't that what everyone does?

Ohnomoreno · 06/03/2021 13:21

Fuck that for a laugh.

LAlady · 06/03/2021 13:23

I'm not

saraclara · 06/03/2021 13:24

@Ihatemyseleffordoingthis

Not since March 2020.
...which ironically is when the OP started this thread, which has become a zombie.

Anyway, I'm not disinfecting or quarantining. Scientists have been widely reported as saying that the initial reports about Covid remaining on surfaces and being transmitted that way were overblown, and that there is next to no risk of that happening under normal conditions.

When you're googling stuff, use the tools button to make sure you're reading up to date advice, not what was being said 12 months ago. Just as one should maybe check when the thread you're contributing to was started. (in the interest of honesty, I didn't, but I did read someone else's post saying it was a zombie)

peak2021 · 06/03/2021 13:24

I use my own 'bag for life', self-service tills, pay by card, and leave non-perishable goods out for a while. Then wash hands thoroughly.

WeatherwaxLives · 06/03/2021 13:26

I'm not.

I'm CEV and shielding.

CustardySergeant · 06/03/2021 13:27

Put them all in the washing machine at 90 degrees. It has the advantage of pre-cooking some items. Don't include eggs though. Too messy. Just soak eggs in bleach for a week instead.
Hope this helps.

herecomesthsun · 06/03/2021 13:29

@WeatherwaxLives

I'm not.

I'm CEV and shielding.

nor us, also CEV/shielding
