How are you disinfecting groceries?

Can see that it’s possible to wipe down bottles/jars but how do you clean a punnet of fruit or a loaf of bread?

Blowtorch. Then sheep dip.

Bouledeneige · 30/03/2020 23:43

Really not.

I'm more worried by proximity to shoppers and staff at the supermarket and touching the buttons on the card reader, external door handles and the petrol pump.

Moominmummy12 · 31/03/2020 22:16

Thanks.

I wiped all packaging, tins etc with antibacterial wipes before putting everything away today. I bought fresh bread and rolls from the bakers so confident about that. Had a box delivered by courier from work today and DH took it in wearing gloves, sprayed it with antibacterial spray and it's staying on our mat until tomorrow. Front door opens straight into the living room so we spray all post etc and leave until the following day before opening.

Wiping all the packaging with clinell wipes, for fruit and veg I’ve just bought some of that veggie wash stuff. It’s not antiviral or anything but basically like soap.

FYI Milton you can use a dilution of the liquid on fruit & veg, but not the tablets (I asked them).

Also FYI apparently Coronavirus can live in the freezer for TWO YEARS so please do wipe stuff before it goes in there!

MiniMaxi · 31/03/2020 22:54

PS I’m talking about loose fruit and veg from box delivery. Stuff in packets has obviously been handled less recently.

Also leaving deliveries in the hallway for at least 24h as that’s how long it lives on cardboard, then wiping down the contents when I open it.

canigooutyet · 31/03/2020 22:57

When I get some groceries in I will let you know what I will do.

Milky77 · 01/04/2020 01:57

I'm not! If I got cv from fruit or vegetables the viral load would be low so the impact would be less. I would much prefer that option. In fact if most of us are going to get cv I'll take that as my option thanks

Ain't nobody got time for dat shit

Newforestclub · 01/04/2020 06:59

Surely spraying with an antibacterial spray is pointless, as this is a virus, not a bacteria?

MiniMaxi · 01/04/2020 07:16

Some antibac sprays (eg dettol) also work against viruses. Some don’t.

Hercwasonaroll · 01/04/2020 07:20

I burn it all. No germs in sight.

Blankiefan · 01/04/2020 07:21

All shopping or delivered packages get wiped with an antibac wipe before leaving the vestibule here.

Fishcakey · 01/04/2020 07:22

I haven't. I should. Washing shopping was a big factor of my OCD when I had PND and I am scared to go back to that. I am being careful though.

daisypond · 01/04/2020 07:28

Expert on radio 4 at the weekend said to leave the shopping in bags for 72 hours. But anything that needs to be used or refrigerated immediately needs to be washed in soapy water.

Given this particular virus only emerged late last year, how would anyone know this? Please link to the evidence.

TheSultanofPingu · 01/04/2020 07:31

To the People leaving post and cardboard packages for 24 hours before opening, wouldn't it work just as well to thoroughly wash your hands after opening and discarding of the packaging?

That seems sensible and what experts are suggesting:

thecognoscenti · 01/04/2020 07:38

I'm not. I might leave it on the side for a bit before I put it away but other than that, nothing. Perhaps I should.

NewYearNewJob123 · 01/04/2020 07:40

I'm not. Nor am I treating letters like they may contain anthrax.

Staypositivepeople · 01/04/2020 07:44

Never occurred to me to do so

SallyWD · 01/04/2020 07:44

I'm not.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 01/04/2020 07:45

My cousin did a family video about disinfecting your groceries.

They are in California, and most people have space outside their front door, but essentially it goes like this.

  1. Spray packages with alcohol - think they use vodka?
  2. Let dry outside.
  3. Wash hands
adaline · 01/04/2020 08:09

I'm not, I'm just washing my hands once I've put the shopping away as well as before, during and after cooking.
