Hello fellow plane spotters!

So I thought Trump had stopped flights to and from Europe but there still seem to be quite a few?

Second point.... anyone know why BA Airbus 319 GEUPD flew Heathrow to Bournemouth yesterday?

Have to say, never seen a hot air balloon on there before!

They are not quite hot air balloons as you know them

Wow! That’s fascinating

Another question for you all, what are the little yellow triangles at most airports?

I have had the app for ages, my dad was an avid plane finder, but sadly died 3 years ago. And so I haven’t looked at it so much recently.

It makes me feel weird to see no flights coming in and out of South Africa right now.

Thanks, I had no idea that’s why the plane was red. Anyone recall what frequency they use to communicate? I’ve got an old cb radio somewhere and may get it out and have a listen to them as they go overhead

Frequency depends where they the aircraft is and also the altitude...(since the airspace “blocks“ may be split vertically as well as horizontally). Google may help find the theoretical frequencies but sometimes sectors can be split or combined (“bandboxed”) if things are quiet so despite knowing frequencies in theory you may have to search.

The Civilian aviation distress frequency is 121.5 MHz, military use, or used to use 243 MHz but most of the time if an airliner has an emergency/urgency the crew won’t switch to the emergency frequency, they would probably “stay” on the frequency they were already being handled/controlled on by ATC..(Even if “squawking” 7700 on their transponder).

A CB “band” radio is specific to the CB range of frequencies, you’d need an “airband” ration to hear civilian aircraft ...and as a point of order in the U.K. whilst it is quietly accepted by the authorities that people listen to flights, it is strictly forbidden to then reproduce or retransmit what you hear, e.g. by rebroadcasting on the Internet (which is done in the States) or even reproducing verbatim in text something heard over the radio...and the UK authorities have been known to prosecute.

notimagain · 29/03/2020 06:56

I thought all flights were banned from Europe to the US?

Nope, limited number of flights from/to Europe still allowed to use a few nominated “gateway” airports in the States.

It’s quite eerie seeing no planes over Scotland and NI at all it for one tiny (private I think) aircraft going from Glasgow to Stornoway.

blackberrysoup · 29/03/2020 12:23

It's really obvious now what a big cargo hub Frankfurt is, so many planes coming and going from there.

blackberrysoup · 29/03/2020 12:26

Further afield, there's 3/4 helicopters from New Orleans over the gulf of Mexico at the moment.

Scottish Ambulance

Witchofzog · 29/03/2020 13:03

@SpoonfulofDragon ooh thank you. I will see if I can see them from my window this time Smile

Elieza · 29/03/2020 13:42

@PaulHollywoodsSexGut I think Loganair have taken over Flybe’s route of Glasgow to Stornaway since they went bust. It could have been that just not displaying a call sign or something? Or as you say a private flight.

Elieza · 29/03/2020 13:42

Just saw the post re Scottish ambulance!

playthestation · 29/03/2020 13:51

Loganair have always operated Stornaway.

Flybe used to do flights in competition but they were operated by Eastern.

FearaNohope · 29/03/2020 20:52

Another one here searching and waiting for the Antonov to go up! Can’t find it at an airport either but other planes seem to show at airports

playthestation · 29/03/2020 21:02

It's in the gr

It's on the ground at Kyiv Hostomel

Airport codes GML, UKKM

Onesmallstepforaman · 29/03/2020 21:14

In York, 5 minutes ago a lot of planes all on the same heading going east at height; any ideas?

FearaNohope · 29/03/2020 21:15

Thank you! Off to look...

blackberrysoup · 29/03/2020 21:16

I missed them I think..where are they now?

Lights from the space station?

I can't locate anything remotely fitting your description. Their closest thing to York is a police helicopter which is flying between Hull and Leeds just now.

FearaNohope · 29/03/2020 21:26

Downloaded freedar as well. It does military flights as well.

BraveLittleDragon · 29/03/2020 21:30

@Onesmallstepforaman It could be the new Space Craft / Instruments that have recently been launched. I will have to check tomorrow for you though. Think they are Elon Musk's - I know this is the week we should be seeing them

blackberrysoup · 29/03/2020 21:41

I downloaded Freedar, thank you. The coast guard helicopter is up over Lincolnshire near Cleethorpes.

blackberrysoup · 29/03/2020 21:44

There's a German air force plane approaching the Hebrides from the west.

Onesmallstepforaman · 29/03/2020 21:48

I thought they were planes in 'groups' of four. Have no idea what height, but didn't appear to be above commercial plane height

Possibly a stream/trail, or whatever they’re calling them, of Space X Starlink satellites?
