Hello fellow plane spotters!

So I thought Trump had stopped flights to and from Europe but there still seem to be quite a few?

Second point.... anyone know why BA Airbus 319 GEUPD flew Heathrow to Bournemouth yesterday?

Weird seeing all the repatriation flights. I wonder how cargo crew are handled coming in and out of the country? Do they have to stay in the airport etc?

Trentgirl · 26/03/2020 13:51

Sorry, 13 airports not 9. This article is about flights arriving in the US but it’s the same in both directions - can’t magic up planes at the other airports.

@playthestation it was all the helicopters I was wondering about, that makes sense though. I’d just not noticed so many in one place before

Elieza · 26/03/2020 22:06

There is not a single plane coming or going to Glasgow int airport just now! Unheard of! Usually they are landing up until 1am. I may get a good sleep tonight without their noise!

Ohdeariedear · 26/03/2020 22:12

We live under one of the Edinburgh airport flight paths and it’s very noticeable when a plane goes over now as there’s so few of them. And most of those were the wee Loganairs going to Orkney or Shetland and even they are stopping now.

Perihelion · 26/03/2020 22:13

Earlier today in Scotland, apart from the helicopters, a third of the air traffic was twin otters.

francienolan · 26/03/2020 22:23

Do police helicopters not show up? I think we've had a few over us but they don't show up. Did see one medical helicopter overhead and on fr24 yesterday.

Elieza · 26/03/2020 23:22

Na the police copters don’t seem to show up.

FrankiesKnuckle · 26/03/2020 23:32

Love FR24!

I live 10 miles or so from a very busy airport - the noise reduction is quite startling!

There are still a lot of planes in the sky tho, So it's still fascinating to watch.

Blobby10 · 27/03/2020 08:06

Are ALL the helicopters off the East coast of Scotland going to and from the oil rigs? There seem to be loads just now!

playthestation · 27/03/2020 09:20

Yes, they are all rig copters. Traffic normal there.

fiddlethefiddles · 27/03/2020 10:01

There's one described as 'bioflight' out from East Midlands airport at the moment, I wonder what it is.

playthestation · 27/03/2020 10:13

Probably surveying. Maybe just positioning. Bio flight is a leasing company.

Elieza · 27/03/2020 13:27

That’s fab @lemonredwood I was just looking for that but he’s no longer in the air. What a nice thing to do. Although over here it would prob be viewed as unnecessary travel..

fiddlethefiddles · 27/03/2020 13:29

Good spot Redwood (and good idea from the pilot too)

LemonRedwood · 27/03/2020 13:54

I suppose the pilot is social distancing quite effectively if s/he's the only one aboard Grin

Another FR thread....Shock

Ah well, trying to pull what look like the FAQs together...again..

  1. Flying is not going to stop...freight needs shifting - we are talking just about Amazon orders we are talking about life saving stuff such as pharmaceuticals which sometimes have to be moved quickly and are temperature sensitive, we’re also talking about medical hardware..end result is DHL/Fedex are busy, due to the drop in passenger numbers=weight you can pack more weight of freight into the holds of passenger types and we are now seeing airlines getting approval to carry cargo in the passenger cabin secured to seats - I posted a link in one of the other threads to an article about this.
  1. US flying - not as busy, aircraft are grounded, routes have been canned, but Flight Radar won’t really show the difference to the casual observer, there will continue to be a lot of aircraft over the States
  1. crews (both the cargo and passenger aircraft crews)..often local restrictions on movement warning from “stay close to hotel, only go out for food” through to a full lock-in inside your hotel room from arrival through to departure...I’m “enjoying” one of those at the moment.....
notimagain · 27/03/2020 14:13

“Not just talking about Amazon Orders...”

Oh for an edit function,,,

Elieza · 27/03/2020 16:44

There is currently only one plane in the sky to/from Glasgow international airport. In 9 minutes when it lands there will not be a single one. It’s soooo bizarre.

fiddlethefiddles · 27/03/2020 16:47

I thought I read that Virgin Atlantic had stopped flights but there is one over Greenland now heading from Heathrow to LA.

notimagain · 27/03/2020 17:34

I thought I read that Virgin Atlantic had stopped flights

Thought they had announced a 85% reduction by this weekend, not a complete shutdown, but I’ve not been following their announcements in great detail...

LAX is one of the US gateway airports so I guess it makes sense for Virgin to keep operating there as long as is feasible.
