What are you going to do about your hair?

Not go to the hairdresser obviously. I mean how are you going to deal with your hair at home in the long term? It could be months before hairdressers can open again.

Mine is cut and coloured fairly regularly and it's quite a 'style' that can't be dealt with by a trim at home by DH or something. Roots starting to come through, have never home dyed so no idea where to start!

It's not the end of the world obviously but I'm NHS and going to work everyday so I need some sort of plan. I was very ill last year and couldn't leave the house for nearly 3 months and my hair was rancid which just amplified my general feeling of misery so I'm keen not to feel like that again if I can help it!

I usually get highlights every three months and root tints monthly, a cut every 6/8 weeks, I also blow dry and use curling or straightening tools. If I don’t I look like Hagrid!

I’m going to stop using everything, let the grey roots come through, let it dry naturally, embrace the Hagrid and do lots of deep conditioning, then maybe will get my old glossy hair (grey and crazy styled as it may be...) when the madness ends!?

We’re going to be properly screwed anyway - DH self employed & we rent, my salary covers 2/3 of the rent & nothing and if we don’t have his income an no ‘80%’ of his income and a maybe £4800 a year help then we’ll be homeless within months anyway so I guess my highlights are going on the list of things I can’t have for a while! Hey ho ...

Don’t know whether to laugh or cry at the concept of an getting an ‘emergency cut’ before they shut, words fail me 🙄...

TimeToGetMeBack · 22/03/2020 11:10

I've never been so pleased to be someone who only box dyes from home and hardly goes for a cut. My last hair cut was nearly a year ago. I think I'll need to get the clippers out for my sons though as their hair grows crazy fast.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 22/03/2020 11:13

I have coloured my hair at home for a long time, as I'm very dark and would be too expensive to have it done every couple of weeks at the salon due to grey roots. In principle j have no issue with growing grey gracefully. However, it's not grey all over so it would look weird. I might use this time to let the grey roots grow and see how much of my own very dark hair is still there.
I'll trim my own fringe, then tie my hair back. My usual salon is still open, warning people on FB not to home colour Hmm

Came on to rage at you about priorities, then read what you do.

Understand you’re public facing and want to look professional but honestly, FWIW if you were part of the team looking after my loved ones, I’d think you were one of the most beautiful people on earth, whatever your hair looked like.
Thank you 💐

My mums got a picture of me up on the wall, actually up on the wall mind,
The last time I tried to cut my hair. My fringe looks like the turrets in a castle.

Khione · 22/03/2020 11:18

Thinning scissors are great for fringes

AnneLovesGilbert · 22/03/2020 11:28

Mine is long and layered so it’ll just grow and thicker up but I need to get back on fringe trimming. When I was between hairdressers I used to do it every couple of weeks so have decent scissors and used the twist technique on a few YouTube videos. It isn’t coloured so don’t have to worry about that. DH is going to look interesting Grin

vhs95 · 22/03/2020 11:29

The trick with cutting your fringe at home is to dry and style as usual, hold it firmly between fingers near the edge (but don't pull it) and cut off a weeny bit - you can always repeat but can't stick it back! When it's a fraction longer than you want it, cut into it. This involves holding the fringe between fingers about half-way down (so you've got a good inch below your fingers flapping free) and, pointing your pointed hairdressing scissors vertically into the fringe, snip up into it along the whole width. This breaks up the blunt edge and softens any mistake you might have made. I have coloured and cut my hair for 5 years and am often complimented on it. Buy proper scissors off Amazon.

TreacherousPissFlap · 22/03/2020 11:30

Mine is choppy and artfully "messy", I have it cut every 5 weeks or so. I also wear a lot of hats so it will not be a surprise to anyone if I start to do so all the time (only work will be a problem)
DH will look like the man who hides in bushes near playgrounds - he may concede to having it clippered with the dog clippers if things drag on too long.
DS OTOH is proudly growing his hair and has not had it cut since last August. He looks an utter state as it is but is thrilled with it so I've bitten my tongue so far. We've insisted on regular appointments at the barbers to have it thinned and shaped and he's almost at the point where it's all one length at last- several months of neglect will I fear do him no favours Grin

maddiemookins16mum · 22/03/2020 11:30

Keep it clean tie it back and if needs be, I’ll get the pyrex pudding bowl out. It worked for my mother.

BeetrootRocks · 22/03/2020 11:32

I have short hair and get it cut every 5 weeks usually!

So this is going to be interesting...

Men too will have a more immediate prob as many have short hair!

Maybe we will all have to take some of this time at home to learn how to do rudimentary, hopefully not diabolical haircuts Grin

YeahRiiiiight · 22/03/2020 11:32

I’ve got long, one length hair that I’m just going to let grow. My full fringe is already too long, so planning to let it grow out and I’ll try to have a long side fringe instead.

I usually box dye at home, but my colour is sold out everywhere. I’ve just ordered a new colour from esalon. Going to go a bit warmer to counteract my washed out, pale face Grin.

Reythemamajedi · 22/03/2020 11:32

I'm so glad it's not just me worried about this. I'm going to look a mess, hair already needs a trim and in 12 weeks will.look horrendous.
I do have a box of hair dye so will leave it as long as I can before dyeing to ensure I go back to work without roots.

ChocAuVin · 22/03/2020 11:42

I got mine highlighted a few weeks ago to blend my greys so I’m usually good for three months at a push — after that, may be time to embrace the greys!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 22/03/2020 11:54

I had my hair cut a few weeks ago. Before that it had been 2 or more years so I think I'll be fine for a few months!

TheBigFatMermaid · 22/03/2020 12:07

I cut and colour my own anyway. I'll be fine. Its DS I'm worried about, he's a right tatty head and in need of a cut.

MorrisZapp · 22/03/2020 12:11

I've got mousy/dirty blonde hair naturally. I always get bright blonde highlights. I can't box dye, can I? I used to back in the 90s but it was all mahogany and auburn then.

I find box dyes look blocky until they've been washed a couple of times and then the natural tones mean it shades nicely.

SomethingOnce · 22/03/2020 12:30

If this is going to go on for months, I’m thinking of chopping my longish hair off myself to save effort/shampoo washing it.

Ruddle91 · 22/03/2020 12:31

Erm put it in a bobble and get over it is my plan 🤣

mummydoris2006 · 22/03/2020 12:32

I was booked in for this coming Thursday but cancelled and they have announced they're closed now anyway. I have my hair and beauty treatments done at the same place that is owned by an extremely hardworking 22 year old. I'm gutted for her but I transferred £50 and asked to buy a gift voucher for when they reopen to show my support.

RedRed9 · 22/03/2020 12:37

I’ll just be trying to avoid this.

What are you going to do about your hair?
Fivefourthree · 22/03/2020 12:38

I intend to wear a hat!

Shoutlouderwhydontyou · 22/03/2020 12:38

I get my hair coloured every 8-10 weeks so would have been due again round mid April. I'm mousy brown too and get foils and a root tint to go blonde so will be staying away from box dyes.

I'll be working (NHS - redeployed somewhere) so hair will be the least of my worries. Can tie it up and if greys get really bad I'll get the cover root spray. Will have a go at triming dd's hair in a few weeks when it gets unmanageable and poor DS will have to make do with DH and his clippers

KoalasandRabbit · 22/03/2020 12:45

I'll probably cut my own - done it before with help of YouTube and it wasn't too bad. Though I'm not a regular on style and beauty and my standard of not too bad maybe low. I do it whilst having a bath so hair is wet, basically put it all in a pony tail move it round to one side and cut an inch off the ends. If it's not even it's layering you were going for though comes out not too uneven. Or maybe my eyesight is bad.
