What are you going to do about your hair?

Not go to the hairdresser obviously. I mean how are you going to deal with your hair at home in the long term? It could be months before hairdressers can open again.

Mine is cut and coloured fairly regularly and it's quite a 'style' that can't be dealt with by a trim at home by DH or something. Roots starting to come through, have never home dyed so no idea where to start!

It's not the end of the world obviously but I'm NHS and going to work everyday so I need some sort of plan. I was very ill last year and couldn't leave the house for nearly 3 months and my hair was rancid which just amplified my general feeling of misery so I'm keen not to feel like that again if I can help it!

I mostly don’t care. I’ll get my roots done and a cut when we’re all allowed out again.

Molly333 · 22/03/2020 08:10

Im a hairdresser and happy to advise where able also if you attempt any home hair jobs u tube is amazing . Also if you have men around with short hair invest in clippers quick as i think they will soon be selling fast

PurpleDaisies · 22/03/2020 08:11

My hairdresser is closing at the end of the week and prioritising her vulnerable clients until then.

She should be closed now! How can she cut people’s hair from 2m away?

Hairdressers are still open at the moment where we live and planning on remaining so for the next week at least. So if it needs an emergency cut and you're able to get out, try and squeeze it in while you can.

My hair is curly and I do get lazy with it. I've been known to go as long as a year between hair cuts. So I'll survive with a messy bun.

I did notice in one of the supermarkets the other day, they had an offer on home hair dyes and the section was decimated. Obviously everyone has been panic buying!!

Mrsjayy · 22/03/2020 08:12

I think I'm going to go grey I said I wouldn't but if I'm going to be at home for months then I am going to brave it.ive no fringe or "fancy" style so it will be ponytails.

nitgel · 22/03/2020 08:13

I'm looking forward to seeing all the mad hair.

PurpleDaisies · 22/03/2020 08:13

So if it needs an emergency cut and you're able to get out, try and squeeze it in while you can.

Don’t do this. It’s against all the social distancing rules.

Mrsjayy · 22/03/2020 08:14

I had to go to superdrug yesterday and I noticed hair dye on offer.

middleager · 22/03/2020 08:14

So if it needs an emergency cut and you're able to get out, try and squeeze it in while you can.

This is absolutely reckless advice that will spread the violence. Please do not take it!

I cancelled my desperately needed appointment this week and face white roots.

middleager · 22/03/2020 08:15

Spread the virus - hopefully not violence!

CheriLittlebottom · 22/03/2020 08:16

Interesting re-definition of the word "emergency" there... Confused

MrsJBaptiste · 22/03/2020 08:16

I was due to have mine coloured this Friday and I'd already stretched out this appt for a couple more weeks that usual...

I can box colour the roots and use coloured hair spray but my worry is that when hairdressers do eventually open, we'll all be desperate for appts and won't be able to get one for months! DH can cut it for me, he usually does this to save £20 at the hairdressers.

As for him and the kids, they had theirs cut yesterday but they usually have it cut every 6 weeks...

Luckily we're all in the same boat and can hide our grey together!

needmoresleep1 · 22/03/2020 08:17

I'm a hairdresser I'm doing colour kits for my clients that have root tints! It will be their colour formula that they usually have and saves them having to navigate choosing a box dye

Paintforkitchen · 22/03/2020 08:21

I have been widening the same. Can cope without a cut as I just have long hair but I have it coloured regularly and I haven't dyed my own hair since I was a teenager! Any recommendations for a brand of box dye to try?

SuperDuperJezebel · 22/03/2020 08:21

I'm glad to have very recently had all my long hair cut off into a short blunt bob. Possibly a bit shorter than I was thinking tbh but that's ok! I had been growing it long for my sister's wedding and now it's over I have chopped it, it was a bit of a mess anyway as some bits were much shorter than others with the post baby hair loss. Only really regretting that my hair is so super blonde that the regrowth is immediately obvious and I really don't trust myself to sort it!

DwayneBenzie · 22/03/2020 08:21

Can’t believe nobody has mentioned the Mumsnet haircut ...

Paintforkitchen · 22/03/2020 08:22

*wondering not widening!

SuperDuperJezebel · 22/03/2020 08:22

And my hairdresser has just WhatsApped me a pic of her own home done natural nails, having said when I saw her that she was resigned to having to give up on her own acrylics for a while 😬

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 22/03/2020 08:23

was the mumsnet haircut like this??

What are you going to do about your hair?
thenightsky · 22/03/2020 08:24

I had a go at cutting my fringe last week. I found the best method was to use an old nit comb to comb it vertically upward then hold it there whilst I snipped the ends with my very sharp little sewing scissors. If you use a normal comb the hair slips out before you can get it all snipped.

Livebythecoast · 22/03/2020 08:25

@FrenchFancie - that made me chuckle as my DP is the same - his hair grows up not down! I suggested investing in some clippers and I'd do it. Needless to say his reply began and ended in F Shock.

My hair is quite long so only needs a trim every few months so I'll be okay and I tie it up for work anyway.

SpyApp · 22/03/2020 08:25

Yes the Mumsnet haircut will be coming into its own.

I tried it years ago - looked like Suzi Quattro

LolaSmiles · 22/03/2020 08:26

I'm putting mine up when it starts to look a bit messy. Now I'm thinking I might buy a box dye just in case.
I normally have balayage done so any suggestions on a home due that looks genuinely multi-tonal would be appreciated

BogRollBOGOF · 22/03/2020 08:26

I mumsnet haircut Grin I get mine done properly a couple of times a year and trim myself a few times in between.
Long, a bit layered and a fringe, so I can handle it myself.

The DCs on the other hand are already going beyond shaggy... They are not known for trusting me and sitting still.

I know what they'll be looking like... clones of my childhood pictures Grin

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/03/2020 08:27

I haven't been to the hairdresser in at least two years. I occasionally hack at my fringe if it's pissing me off. Look at YouTube for tips, I would think.
