What are you going to do about your hair?

Not go to the hairdresser obviously. I mean how are you going to deal with your hair at home in the long term? It could be months before hairdressers can open again.

Mine is cut and coloured fairly regularly and it's quite a 'style' that can't be dealt with by a trim at home by DH or something. Roots starting to come through, have never home dyed so no idea where to start!

It's not the end of the world obviously but I'm NHS and going to work everyday so I need some sort of plan. I was very ill last year and couldn't leave the house for nearly 3 months and my hair was rancid which just amplified my general feeling of misery so I'm keen not to feel like that again if I can help it!

I’m going to see what it’s looks like with my natural colour, and see how long it grows!! Also not getting my nails done!! My last Tuesday appointment was cancelled so managed to peal off the colour on friday night then soaked them in oil cut them and gave them a good file and buff with one of those boards with numbers on, so you know what order to do it in, Will need to but oil on them every night to get them back in good condition.

AmelieTaylor · 22/03/2020 08:29

I had mine cut two weeks ago and thought I was being a bit stupid then! Two weeks ago.

My hairdressers were all washing hands/using hand gel -encouraging clients to and wiping down stations between clients. I used hand gel and didn’t touch anything -stayed 2m away from everyone except my actual hair dresser. I didn’t have it washed (my favourite bit in the massage chair) Paid by contactless & said I’ll see them on the other side (hopefully)

So until god knows when, it’ll just grow and I’ll trim the fringe 🤷🏻‍♀️ Thankfully it’s just long & straight, but even if it wasn’t I wouldn’t care right now. I’m too busy being terrified of loved ones & myself, dying. 🥺 it focuses your mind.

I cut mine at home with clippers anyway into a short crop. For those thinking about going for a short style it might well be worth it. They come with blade guards that will leave you with slightly longer hair than a full buzz. I went from hair way past my shoulders to this a couple of years ago as was fed up with hassle and expense of covering grey.

Working from home I'm wondering if I can get away with a mohawk for a month or so and the festival hair dye.

😁

Dwayne I was gonna mention that! Maybe it's a bit early days for an experiment though? I've managed to do an ok cut in the past using this method but I wouldn't want to take responsibility for someone else doing it to themselves!

MargotLovedTom1 · 22/03/2020 08:33

My hair grows at a rate of approx three inches a day so my grey roots are my main problem. The hair dye section in Asda had been ransacked the other day so we can't be the only vain people worrying about this in the midst of a pandemic Wink.

Unfortunately, I'm not able to stay at home due to working in a school and we're open for key workers' childcare so will have to make do with root spray for now.

FallonSwift · 22/03/2020 08:38

I have short hair with an undercut - which was getting very fluffy. Fortunately DH has a set of clippers so I did it myself earlier in the week. The back was a bit tricky but I managed it. No doubt my hairdresser would laugh herself silly if she saw it as it's probably not quite level all the way round, but it's only hair!

Ronnie27 · 22/03/2020 08:39

I’m very blonde but naturally very dark (and long and thick Grin). Have been thinking about returning to my natural colour for a while so depending how long this lasts and how bad it looks I’ll either have an ombré kind of thing going on or pick up some brown box dyes and go for it myself at home.

Ronnie27 · 22/03/2020 08:40

I’ve got clippers so can sort the kids’ hair myself but it won’t be the best! Blush

SoupDragon · 22/03/2020 08:41

Any recommendations for a brand of box dye to try?

I've had good results from Nice n Easy and Garnier Nutrisse. I think the last one used was L'Oréal Excellence and that seems fine too.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 22/03/2020 08:44

I was due to go next week for roots, highlights and a trim but we have symptoms in the house so we are self isolating. I’ve got lots of headbands, bobbles, clips etc so I’ll be tying it up and rocking some hair accessories.

My nails need doing as well though too Sad

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 22/03/2020 08:45

I have one of these that I use for my fringe, works surprisingly well to get a level finish. When I do it free hand I end up with one side longer than the other

MissisBee · 22/03/2020 08:50

I've been growing my grey out anyway, so will just continue. It was already in dire need of a cut, had planned a while ago to book one for next week. Never did thankfully. Had a go at cutting it myself yesterday and quite pleased with it. My hair is curly though, so can disguise the uneven bits quite well.

pollysproggle · 22/03/2020 08:51

I've been cutting my own hair for two years now after learning some tricks and tips on YouTube. Really quite easy and saves me lots of time and money.
I have long layers and never messed up. Good scissor are key.

Barkingfuckingdogs · 22/03/2020 08:53

Mine is long blonde with a dark root smudge, so will just grow out nicely. I've got toners and purple shampoo to keep it ashy and root spray to hide greys. Oh has just ordered himself a hair dye for men kit too!

I reckon that there'll be an underground mobile hairdresser scene anyway.

TheMarbleFaun · 22/03/2020 08:54

That's a great idea needmoresleep and maybe a way for hairdressers to keep some money coming in

EverydayLife · 22/03/2020 09:01

YouTube videos are good for demonstrating how to cut your fringe or give yourself a trim (section your hair and twist it) which I have done in the past and it’s been fine.

I am going to pick up a box dye highlighting kit and just do my parting if desperate which again I have done before and the result is passable.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 22/03/2020 09:05

This is quite rancid but I'm planning to train my hair during this time so I don't have to wash it daily. I've been washing daily since I was a teen, so by the end I'm aiming for twice a week. Today is day two and my fringe is sticking up in a something-about-mary kind of way that the DC keep staring at every time they speak to me.

Shouldbedoing · 22/03/2020 09:11

There's going to be a government lockdown soon because people don't understand social distancing and risk. I could have done with a fringe trim this weekend, but I didn't go, because hey, we have a highly contagious, frequently fatal or disabling virus on the go. I despair.

delilahbucket · 22/03/2020 09:14

My next appointment is for in eight weeks as I had one last week. I'm booked in for a full head of highlights, right before my wedding. To be honest, if everything is shut I won't give a flying monkeys about my hair, I'll be more upset about cancelling my wedding.

Hamsterian · 22/03/2020 09:16

I can’t believe the person who said their partner/husband and children had a haircut two days ago...wtf? What bit about social distancing do people not get - this is one of the reasons things are so bad in Italy now!

ErrolTheDragon · 22/03/2020 09:17

I got mine trimmed to shoulder length over a month ago when we started to see the writing on the wall. It's straight, no fringe, so I'll just let it do its thing and if it gets ridiculously long DH will have to hack off a few inches.

I've not RTFT but has anyone mentioned the 'MN haircut' yet? It was a thing a few years ago, maybe time for it to be revived. Or alternatively, tie it up in 'the MN scarf', whatever that was.

SimonJT · 22/03/2020 09:18

I’m going to cut my boyfriends, it’s fairly curly so I’m going to lightly trim each curl. I have some clippers so I can use those on the sides. He wants to shave his head, he has been told if I’m stuck with him living here there is no way in hell he is shaving his head again.

He can’t cut mine as he can’t use scissors, I have a long on top short on the sides jobby, I’ll be able to give myself a wet trim and I’m hoping he’ll be able to hold a clipper okay.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/03/2020 09:18

DH bought himself some clippers too.

RedWine123 · 22/03/2020 09:21

I have shaved my head as I’ve wanted to do it for ages and thought... when is there going to be a better time than now?

My hair was down to my waist.

Mild eczema on scalp also so it’s been lovely to treat it properly. I would highly recommend! Although I’m not looking forward to the awkward phases of growing it out Grin

Zisforstripyoss · 22/03/2020 09:22

I just have basic shoulder length hair with a fringe. I've got hairdressing scissors and a spirit level thing to make it straight anyway, as my hair grows really quickly so I tend to trim my own fringe between cuts. My hair could take a couple of months of no trimming if it came to it, although I may have a go at it, depending on how bored i get.

My DC just have standard little girl long hair, so they can do without haircuts for the time being.
