Comforting TV shows

These are uncertain times. We are all likely to be at home a lot more than usual. So I'm after comforting TV shows to watch.

So far we've watched things like The Good Place, The Crown, The Split (not comforting as such but so well written). And now rewatching Death In Paradise (which is very not cool but also very comforting!). But I'd be very grateful for your top tips too.

No horror. Limited violence. And probably not hospital dramas at this point in time please!
TIA

Father Brown
Shakespeare and Hathaway

I think there may be something wrong with me. I tried Detectorists and didn't like it. Don't know why. It might be too close to the sort of thing that I write, so i can see the wires, as it were.

I've been watching lots of lovely cosy 'domestic documentaries'. Things like Tony Robinson's Walking Through History and Villages by the Sea type of things. Also watching back through old series of Time Team.

quirrels · 18/03/2020 10:57

On the basis of this thread I have started Last Tango in Halifax and Gavin and Stacey. When they first came out I wouldn't have glanced at either. Now I am looking forward to watching them every night.

It's not well known but I really recommend "The Heart Guy". It's an Australian medic/family drama with a lovely sense of humour.

Davespecifico · 18/03/2020 11:03

There are about 6 episodes of Secrets of the Museum - a behind the scenes look at what they do.
Gavin and Stacey - I can watch these over and over.
Little Britain
Father Ted
10 Years Younger
If you’ve got an obscure channel called Quest Red, you can see stacks of the USA version of Long Lost Family - if you’re into mawkery.
The Detectorists
Even Homes under the Hammer is a bit of a distraction.

TheMarbleFaun · 18/03/2020 11:23

YY to Marvellous Mrs Maisel - gentle, witty & the costumes are stunning
Also if you haven’t seen it (and even if you have) Mad Men there’s about 8 series I think. Worth it for Don Draper alone surely

I love this thread. So many wonderful ideas. Comfort tv is exactly what we need right now.

Today I had to get a few bits from Tesco and popped into a charity shop. I got dvds of all 9 series of As Time Goes By plus the reunion specials. Series 1 and 2 of Being Human. Still Game series 6(I own 1-5), One Foot In The Grave series 3(I own 1 and 2). and the film My Fair Lady all for just £3. I also looked out my boxset of The Jewel In The Crown which I haven't watched yet so those will keep me busy for a while.

formerbabe · 18/03/2020 13:21

I like watching the drama channel...in the afternoons I watch bread, hi de hi and as time goes by.

formerbabe · 18/03/2020 13:22

Countdown is good too as you can play along

Trisha01 · 18/03/2020 14:27

I love Channel 5 Barging In Britain. Something so serene about watching people on canal boats.

Juanmorebeer · 18/03/2020 14:31

Derek

springydaff · 18/03/2020 16:11

Can't bear to watch Countdown re 'dolly bird' in figure-hugging clothes. 19 fucking 70s, anyone? It shouldn't be on our screens Angry Angry

SilverySurfer · 18/03/2020 16:23

I'm currently watching 100 Humans on Netflix. 100 humans of varying sizes, shapes, sex, attractiveness, behaviour ++ They have so far run experiments on the effective of those in different age decades, differences between the sexes, who is most biased (age, tattoos, obesity so far).

It's really very interesting and I am looking forward to watching the remaining episodes.

Zaphodsotherhead · 18/03/2020 16:37

Ooh, that sounds interesting Silvery. Might check it out. Am definitely finding factual programmes more 'involving' than dramas. Except Midsomer Murders of course. Love that one.

Pinkarsedfly · 18/03/2020 16:39

The Repair Shop
Richard Osman’s House Of Games

CandiceSucksCandy · 18/03/2020 16:43

Meerkat Manor, the Lazuli are a right bunch of little twats

AngryPrincess · 18/03/2020 17:14

I just discovered Merlin. Then my 6 year old became a bit obsessed with it.

FraughtwithGin · 18/03/2020 17:37

Jeeves and Wooster, just the music cheers me up.
Or Yes, Minister/Yes, Prime Minister if you want a bit of linguistic and intellectual challenge.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 18/03/2020 18:19

Last Tango in Halifax, previous series all there on BBC1 catch up.

SilverySurfer · 18/03/2020 22:04

Hope you enjoy it Zaphod - let me know what you think.

I've also started watching some of the original Great British Bake Off weeks on Netflix as I seem to have missed some and I really dislike the Channel 4 version. Does anyone remember Ruby? I had forgotten how irritating she was. I wonder if she's changed as she has got older? I'm guessing not.

twosoups1972 · 18/03/2020 22:32
