Comforting TV shows

BursarsDriedFrogPills · 15/03/2020 08:50

These are uncertain times. We are all likely to be at home a lot more than usual. So I'm after comforting TV shows to watch.

So far we've watched things like The Good Place, The Crown, The Split (not comforting as such but so well written). And now rewatching Death In Paradise (which is very not cool but also very comforting!). But I'd be very grateful for your top tips too.

No horror. Limited violence. And probably not hospital dramas at this point in time please!
TIA

I was going to say Grey's Anatomy but probably not at the moment Grin

The Good Wife?

64sNewName · 15/03/2020 09:19

The Repair Shop.

It’s back on this coming Wednesday - but there are some on iPlayer just now from last series.

missmouse101 · 15/03/2020 09:21

Money for nothing is also good. It's on iplayer.

IT Crowd - glorious daftness, the Fire at a Sea Parks scene in particular makes me howl
And for an instant cheer-me-up, Steve Martin and Lily Tomlin dancing at the end of All of Me ...

Palavah · 15/03/2020 09:25

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Marvelous Mrs Maisel
The House of Elliot
Any period drama
Gbbo - + gbbo professionals
Great pottery throwdown, sewing bee
Great British interior design challenge or whatever it was called
Fleabag

The schedules are surely going to empty a lot as I think they'll be limits on how they can film live shows and surely things like Eastenders which are only filmed a few days in advance will struggle if cast & crew members are self-isolating. I am hoping this will mean that they dust off some older programmes and show those. I was off sick, housebound and living by myself a few years ago for a month or so and Peak Practice was on at 2pm and became a highlight of my day.
Mrs Brown's Boys seemed an odd replacement for Match of the Day last night.

AnotherEmma · 15/03/2020 09:28

YY to Marvellous Mrs Maisel

Fleabag is amazing TV but too short and I mourned it afterwards so I'm not so sure I'd recommend it as feelgood TV - you need something you can binge more!

mogtheexcellent · 15/03/2020 09:31

Daytime bbc dramas. Shakespeare and Hathaway, father brown, the coroner and the mallorca files.

Love easy watch programmes.

mogtheexcellent · 15/03/2020 09:32

Heartbeat is on itv player. Also check out drama tv player. Theres some good dramas on there.

BursarsDriedFrogPills · 15/03/2020 09:35

Thanks for all the recommendations. Some things we've watched already and loved - Good Wife, Jonathan Creek (well, I love it and DH tolerated it).

Marvellous Mrs Maisel - interesting. Seen it recommended before. Can I ask if those of you with a male OH reckon it would appeal to both sexes? Sweeping generalisation I know but hopefully you get what I mean...?

Gardener’s World is back next week - Monty Don’s voice is always comforting. Going to be on Talking Pictures TV for the rest of the time I think!

AnotherEmma · 15/03/2020 09:41

DH enjoys it. He is open minded and not a sexist prick so he enjoys a lot of "female-centric" tv, he watched Orange is the New Black long after I got bored of it for example. (That's another feel good watch actually! I enjoyed the first few seasons.)

AccioCake · 15/03/2020 09:43

Gilmore Girls and Queer Eye on Netflix.
Parks & Recreation on Amazon.

crosser62 · 15/03/2020 09:48

Anything David Attenborough...obviously.

Schits creek

Countryfile.

longwayoff · 15/03/2020 09:51

Not for everyone but New Tricks - the proper ones, not the later mess that was made of it - 5 series on uktvplay.

fairyfingers · 15/03/2020 09:55

Dh and I always said we'd watch stranger things and never have so that's our plan.

Downton if only for the comedy value and cousin Matthews special tingle
Last tango in Halifax
Belgravia starts tonight and that looks like utter tosh so maybe good
Poirot and miss marple

Friday night dinner
Derry girls
Father ted
The it crowd
All on channel4 player

TBBT, how I met your mother, the thick of it (maybe not comfort exactly but v funny) all on Netflix.

If you have amazon prime there is a show called black sails with is all about the golden age of piracy. Again not comfort watch (it's like vikings and game of thrones in sex/language terms) but I really enjoyed it.

N0ManJan · 15/03/2020 09:57

Dinnerladies is my ultimate comfort programme, I think you can watch them on YouTube I’ve bought the DVD now because I rewatch that often

fairyfingers · 15/03/2020 09:57

Oh and Ghosts on iplayer. We all just loved that. So funny and really sweet. Maybe the Goes Wrong show too if you like silly.

LucilleBluth · 15/03/2020 10:06

My ultimate comfort show is Frasier. Gentle humour, comforting colours and a 90s sensibility.

BursarsDriedFrogPills · 15/03/2020 10:25

Thanks @AnotherEmma that's helpful. DH also not a sexist prick so sounds like it might be a good one to try.

Love the 90s recommendations but if I can find a couple of new things, that would be welcome. I (along with most of us I guess) need to be both distracted and comforted. Which means that some of the older favourites are too well worn to fit the bill IYSWIM?

Gilmore Girls
Community (that's a new one)

mrsjg · 15/03/2020 10:29

Schitts creek on Netflix. 5 series to binge watch. Hope they release the final season on there soon.

ShootEmUpSarsaparilla · 15/03/2020 10:36

Both DH and I enjoy Mrs Maisel.

TaTuirseOrm · 15/03/2020 10:39

When I think of comfort TV I automatically think of The Detectorists, and I see a few others have suggested it too.

longwayoff · 15/03/2020 10:48

Fans of Detectorists, if you missed Worzel Gummidge at Christmas, find it on iplayer, unlikely I know, but you'll like it.
