I’ve just spilt homemade tomato soup on my mainly white duvet cover. I’ve got the sauce off and covered the stain in diluted bio washing liquid and put it in a cold wash immediately. If this doesn’t work is there anything I can do?
It was my Valentine’s Day present (asked for) and the first nice duvet cover I’ve ever had...
Sorry for the utterly riveting thread

Right lads and lasses, the results:
I just took the cover from the machine and I can’t even spot where the stains were! Thank you for all of your advice. I’m so relieved and will be glad of the clean sheets tomorrow

Do not tumble dry it. Just fold it up whilst damp and hang it in a window. You might need to repeat the dampening and hanging a couple of times but sunlight should shift it.

As a PP said, it worked miracles here too on white onesies for poop and food stains.

Sounds delicious Smile

You need whatever wash up liquid you can lay your hands on that promises to cut grease to the max. Also bio laundry detergent and WHITE vinegar or lemon juice. Let these soak into the fabric for a few hours to overnight.

Using cold water, wash just the stained section by hand, rubbing vigorously. Try to contain the stained area. Repeat if there is still some stain.

Once you get it almost out you can wash in hot water after soaking with wash up liquid and bio detergent again along with Oxy and a good spritz of stain remover.

Dry in the sun when you're happy with the results.

Garam masala and paprika are both beasts to get out of fabric.

x-post!
Well done. What a relief.

eaglejulesk · 11/03/2020 04:13

Great news !!!

FortunesFave · 11/03/2020 04:19

Hooray! In future, maybe you could take your duvet off during the day and have an old cover on there...something busy which won't show stains!

Dovegreyflower · 11/03/2020 04:19

Is it all white ?
If it is still stained, buy some Milton fluid and even if it’s dried in, damp the patch, pour on Milton fluid, and allow it to sit for a while, in a sink would be best.
When it’s gone, the stain, wash in machine as normal.
Careful not to get the Milton on your clothes as it bleaches.
I’ve used this for years to get rid of food stains on baby white clothes, an d tomato stains from white school t shirts.
Don’t bother putting it in the sun lol 😂

Dovegreyflower · 11/03/2020 04:22

Ah the wash did it. Well done

RogueV · 11/03/2020 04:44

Soup recipe please

Growingboys · 11/03/2020 04:56

What on Earth were you doing eating tomato soup in bed???

I have lovely white bed linen and I also love tomato soup but I'd never have the two together!

Hope you fix it.

sittingonacornflake · 11/03/2020 05:05

Sunshine!!! My sons white pyjamas got completely covered in tomato sauce and I lay them in the window in bright sunshine for a day and a half and the stains completely vanished

apricotnuts · 11/03/2020 05:34

Soaking it in bio washing powder overnight may help.

speakout · 11/03/2020 06:54

You eat soup in bed?

Wow, go woman, you know how to live!!

Meckity1 · 11/03/2020 07:26

I got Heinz tomato soup stains out of son's martial arts kit by hanging in the sunshine, although it was summer. Don't lose hope!

caperberries · 11/03/2020 07:31

Yes cold water and sunlight are your best bet

MinesAPintOfTea · 11/03/2020 07:36

Maybe now drape the bed in a fleece blanket during the day. Also good to make sure your outside clothes aren't touching where you sleep if you normally sit on your bed during the daytime

Sleepycat91 · 11/03/2020 07:37

'Elbow grease' use it on my sons white tops, and my DH got tomato sauce all over a light grey hoody so i put some on it and chucked it in the machine and it came out fine

Whatevah · 11/03/2020 07:44

Glad you didn't listen to me, with my hot wash OP. Lots of good laundry tips here.
If you read the thread you'll see the OP lives in a student house so sometimes eats in her room.

RickOShay · 11/03/2020 07:46

How satisfying that it came out. Would also like recipe Grin

billybagpuss · 11/03/2020 07:54

The weather has been spectacularly unhelpful this year, but if we’re due a frosty night wash it again with whatever stain remover you’d usually use and hang it out overnight, hopefully it’ll ice like cardboard. Brilliant for stains.

My granny used to clean her rugs in the snow put them rug side down and push them in a bit and leave them awhile and they come up like new.

billybagpuss · 11/03/2020 07:55

Just seen your update very pleased it came out 😍

Palmtree76 · 11/03/2020 08:13

I did this on brand new duvet with an upside down falling down bagel covered in ketchup.

Vanish didn’t work so in end I got a tiny paintbrush and painted on kitchen bleach (!) onto stain then shoved on a hot wash. Came out like new.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 11/03/2020 08:19

Sunshine is like magic on tomato based stains.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/03/2020 08:21

Cold water is the right way to go. Also, if the stain doesn't come out try some actual stain remover liquid, then another cold wash. Then outside o the line if you can. Air drying in the sun does indeed work wonders (I expect it's something to do with science - who knows!)

SchadenfreudePersonified · 11/03/2020 08:23

BTW - tomato soup in bed?

You're living the dream, girl!
