I’ve just spilt homemade tomato soup on my mainly white duvet cover. I’ve got the sauce off and covered the stain in diluted bio washing liquid and put it in a cold wash immediately. If this doesn’t work is there anything I can do?
It was my Valentine’s Day present (asked for) and the first nice duvet cover I’ve ever had...
Sorry for the utterly riveting thread

Can someone explain to me what this sun thing is please? I have heard of it vaguely, but living oop north I think it’s a mythical creature.

GloGirl · 11/03/2020 11:02

I need the recipe!

Beau20 · 11/03/2020 11:09

@Whatevah no idea what a ninny is sorry.

Not making myself look like anything, just not quite sure how someone has no idea on how to wash a duvet cover and everyone is making it out like it's some sort of delicate silk piece. Just chuck it in the wash on a hot wash any washing power will do. Jesus.

DontCallMeShitley · 11/03/2020 12:40

Do not dry it if the stain is still there.

Keep it damp and cover it in washing up liquid. Rub it in gently from the centre to the edges. Leave it for a few hours and do it again. You should see the colour start to loosen.

Rinse it and do it again. Continue until you can't see the stain or until it has reached a level you can live with.

This can take a few days. I recently removed a tomato based stain from a sauce this way.

Do not use brightly coloured washing up liquid though as it can also stain unless you test first.

mambanumber5 · 11/03/2020 12:41

Put it on the line or in a window. May take a couple of days but will be gone like magic. Then hot wash.

MotherOfDragonite · 11/03/2020 13:01

Vanish stain remover! And then sun!

Aurea · 11/03/2020 13:47

Another vote for sunshine. It gets rid of a lot of stains.

FelicityBeedle · 11/03/2020 14:19

Thank you for all the continued advice, as I mentioned upthread it came out just fine!
Recipe for rather delicious tomato soup:
3 small onions (red or white doesn’t really matter) and 3-4 red peppers roughly chopped covered in oil and two tsp of paprika, and a half tsp of Garam Masala and another of ground coriander. Cook until just starting to burn on a high heat

In the meantime chop another onion and 6 gloves of garlic, cook in oil salt and pepper until just slightly burnt.
Add two tins of chopped tomatoes, a generous squeeze of purée, the peppers and onions, Worcester sauce and a pinch of sugar.
Add whatever stock you have in (hence my weird mix, stock cubes work fine, ham can be really lovely) and water until it looks right

Taste and if it’s not yet smoky and lovely let the bottom catch and taste again.
Blend
Eat cold and spill over your lovely new duvet cover

Ah, no turmeric in the tomato soup then.😰 If there's turmeric in a stain you're buggered - it's there for ever.😅

Dowser · 11/03/2020 17:21

I had to bin my beautiful rifat ozbek duvet after it got a stain on it
I put it on a 90 degree wash and it cane out crumpled to heck
Yes I could’ve ironed it but I felt life was too short to spend a good 30 mins doing that
The last time I changed the bed I got it out of the drawer and wouldn’t put it on the bed. Thought why am I continually torturing myself with it ... so out it went
I’d buy it back in a heartbeat.. it was my best tkmaxx bargain ever

I tried a cold wash first, with vanish.. no good

Megan2018 · 11/03/2020 17:28

@Dowser - too late now but you should’ve asked a dry cleaners to launder it for you! Or washed it a few more times and line dried. Those creases would’ve come out!

Megan2018 · 11/03/2020 17:29

@FelicityBeedle Great recipe, thank you for sharing

MrsClatterbuck · 11/03/2020 17:48

To get tomato based stains out I usually cover the stain in the Vanish gel and put in the washing machine and leave for half an hour.(I set the timer on the machine so it automatically comes on) I also put in bio liquid and some vanish powder using a 50° wash and the stain usually comes out though sometimes it takes another go.

Ariela · 11/03/2020 17:51

Wash as normal. Hang in sun for 4-8 hours, that's all.

mathanxiety · 11/03/2020 18:34

YY to the dire effect of turmeric, ArthurDentsSpaceTowel

Many thanks for the fab soup recipe, @FelicityBeedle.

woodencoffeetable · 11/03/2020 18:36

yes to putting it outside.
it doesn't need to be sunny, a light overcast day will do as well

MurrayTheMonk · 11/03/2020 18:53

Did it come out???

MurrayTheMonk · 11/03/2020 18:55

Incidentally op I feel your pain. Dd2 has just had her room redecorated. We put on the new and very expensive sheets she bribed me into getting her last night and she went to bed at 9. At 10 she had a nosebleed all over them. But didn't tell me til 11 when it was dry and set.
I had nothing else and in desperation used some 1001 trouble shooter carpet stain remover. Worked a treat! And the sheets are fine!!!

MurrayTheMonk · 11/03/2020 18:57

And now I've RTFT 🙄😆

Beachagain · 11/03/2020 18:57

Get the napisan on it Flowers

Babymamaroon · 11/03/2020 20:08

Deffo the sun!!! I got masala sauce on my brand new table cloth, put it in the sun and it disappeared. Like magic Smile

Madcats · 11/03/2020 20:14

Thanks for the recipe OP.

My local veg stall usually has bowls of peppers to £1 so I'll enjoy making this.

ChoporNot · 11/03/2020 20:22

Just popping on to say the magic sun cures turmeric stains too. I once spilt an entire take-away dal (very turmeric-y) onto a cream sofa cover. Bright yellow after washing. A few hours in the sun and stain had disappeared completely.

FortunesFave · 11/03/2020 21:00

Chopor yes! DD got a sauce all over her brand new white top and I washed it on cold water but it was still there....literally a few hours in the sun and gone!

Tessabelle74 · 12/03/2020 17:26

Definitely get it out in the sun, it magically disappears!
