Ridiculous ‘calling in sick’ reasons

A member of staff has called in sick with a bit of a Hmm reason and it reminded me of a young member of staff years ago who called in sick with jet lag - they’d been to Ireland .

Any one else with daft reasons for calling in sick ?

They probably thought you got sunburned on holiday.

Years ago, I was working at a secondary school in London. I had picked up a pair of BARGAIN trousers in the Laura Ashley sale - smart black trousers, perfect for work. Except they were a size smaller than I normally wore and were a snug fit but I had to buy them because BARGAIN! The first time I wore them to work, I sat down in my car and as I sat down I heard a ripping sound. The seam had completely split! No way I could go into work with my arse on show. I was already cutting it fine timewise so had no choice but to phone my Head of Year and explain I'd be late for form time / registration due to trouser emergency. Luckily HoY was a friend as well as a colleague and found the whole thing hilarious. He got my tutor group to give me a round of applause when I finally arrived that morning. Lesson learnt - a bargain is not a bargain if you have to throw in the bin the first time you wear it!

A work colleague claimed a women on the tube seat opposite vomited so violently that it went all over her and even inside her shoes!!! It might have been true though, but taking a whole day off was unjustified.

I have such a severe phobia that if that happened to me I'd be off too, being violently ill myself. My worst nightmare!

A colleague of DH couldn't come to work as he'd eaten too much Sunday dinner 😂 and another time it was because his trousers were in the wash.

Some days I think about calling in saying I can't come in as the cat is asleep on my chest and looks too comfy to move Grin

DH had a member of staff call in to say they had food poisoning from a work meal out they'd had the night before. Even though he had been phenomenally drunk and the last person home 😂

I used to be airline cabin crew and a cold sore WAS on the list of discounted illnesses! Along with blocked ears or D&V that you can’t fly with. I think you were allowed one or two discounted sickness periods a year that didn’t count towards the sickness absence process. Cold sores can look pretty unsightly and were apparently a good hygiene issue.

We had someone a while ago called in sick because he didn't have any trousers confused. Apparently he washed them all at the same time and they were all soaking wet.

I've made the same mistake. But I can, and did, work from home.

I had a boss once (headteacher) who didn't come in one day because she'd dyed her hair the night before and it had come out the wrong colour.

She wasn't coming back in until she had re dyed it.

Except she'd forgotten her purse in her office so had to pop into work for it.
Then came back later that afternoon with the right colour hair.

She told all the kids it was her twin that had been in earlier! :)

I had a line manager who used to phone in sick regularly to look after his pregnant wife

I've had someone ring in sick due to a "very bad" midge bite. Another colleague due to "feeling tired".

I know a doctor who left wards without medical cover for many hours due to a sick rabbit. Her husband was there but she didn't want to leave the rabbit. This was out of hours so the patients had no doctor at all until she arrived
