How often do you take your DC on holidays? We go at different amount each year and wondered what everyone else does.

When mine were young, we went on a holiday every August, and then would try to get a weekend away somewhere (maybe with relatives or maybe in a youth hostel) at some other time of year too.
Once they got to 8+ they would all also go with Cubs / Scouts a few times a year.

When small we went away twice a year, at least one abroad. After my husband passed away (kids 4 and 6) it was abroad once a year, sometimes every other year, and maybe a week at a self catering cottage here when not going abroad. Now they are teens and my son went abroad with his girlfriend last year and is going again this year. I took them abroad at Christmas. I had promised another trip to Spain as we didn't go away at all for 20 months until the Christmas trip but not sure if I can afford it. Trips vary from one week to two.

Once per year ish, 10 days last summer, a week the previous year both in Devon, 5 days this April, can't imagine we will get anywhere next year so it'll likely be a 2 year gap. We had a weekend with family one year as our only holiday.
My kids get the odd week in Spain with their dad and grandparents.
There have been numerous years of no holidays and some of our trips are due to the generosity of my family members.

DragonMamma · 23/02/2020 23:32

Usually abroad for 2 weeks. A week in the UK at Easter (although it’s abroad this year) and then they go with my DM for 2-3 weeks a year, to her caravan. They’ve also just come back from a weeks holiday in the UK for Feb half term.

They are very lucky.

Haggisfish · 23/02/2020 23:34

Never abroad yet. Dc 9 and 7. Go for a week in summer to beach and about four or five weekend breaks throughout year at youth hostels/glamping.

Mamato2gorgeousboys · 23/02/2020 23:34

We tend to go abroad about 3/4 times a year.

Lipperfromchipper · 23/02/2020 23:44

We do something every school break, which includes 2-3 foreign holidays and hotel breaks maybe 3-4 times.

ceilihouse · 23/02/2020 23:46

Every half term/school holiday we usually get away,

1stMrsF · 23/02/2020 23:48

Usually a week for May half term and a week in August. That would be France or similar (has been Netherlands, could be UK). Sometimes also a few days at Easter. All with extended family. Every other year a few days just the 4 of us - Paris last time, Sorrento this year. Before they started school 1 week in September in Greece was much cheaper!

AndWhatNext · 23/02/2020 23:50

My DD is 12 and it's just 2 of us.
Typically...
2 weeks camping in the summer - almost always in the UK.
Around 4 - 5 weekends camping in the warmer months.
4 days-week somewhere at Easter - been a city break in Europe the past few years.
Lodge / cottage in the UK Oct half term.

DD would happily stay home. I really need the breaks from work.

Whitelisbon · 23/02/2020 23:55

We had 4 nights in a caravan 3 years ago.
Nothing since.
There will be no holiday this year, although maybe next year we'll get a few days in a caravan somewhere local ish.

Mydogatemypurse · 23/02/2020 23:58

We don't go abroad. But have 2 caravan or cottage holidays a year about 4 days or a week. We prob get about 3/4 weekends camping too weather and money dependant. X

danadas · 23/02/2020 23:59

We don't really do holidays. We did 5 days in the IoM about 10 years ago and 3 days in Wales about 6 years ago. Not sure when we will next go.

Chocolateandchats · 24/02/2020 00:01

We do two weeks abroad every year or two depending on finances.

Chickenitalia · 24/02/2020 00:07

2-3 weeks during the summer hols, have been abroad or in the UK, tends to be alternate years abroad.
Maybe 2 or 3 weekends with family who live a distance away. They will also visit us and stay for a weekend a few times a year.
That’s it usually. The other holidays are so short I don’t fancy going away and the kids are always easy to entertain near home for those breaks. They like a holiday but also like relaxing at home, and trips away aren’t always relaxing in my experience!

I do know a lot of people who seem to go away every school break though, it’s not unusual.

Doodlesquah1 · 24/02/2020 00:10

Once a year abroad (2-3 weeks) then once or twice a year for a week in England

Stompythedinosaur · 24/02/2020 01:31

4ish times a year. There's always a main holiday (this year Butlins, last year a fortnight in Costa Rica, so varies a lot). We will camp at least once and there's a festival we go to each year. Sometimes we do a weekend in London or elsewhere. We generally stay with friends in Wales at least once a year, sometimes friends in Scotland too.

Camomila · 24/02/2020 06:52

Once or twice a year - mostly to Italy visiting relatives (so cheap) or a few days in other places in England (visiting friends or for weddings etc)

This year planning a long weekend around Easter in the UK - promised to take DS1 to Thomas Land and then Italy in August (depending on Corona Virus!)

trilbydoll · 24/02/2020 07:12

Last year we only went camping in France in August which felt like a long time to wait for a holiday. Usually we do something in the UK in Feb half term or Easter as well.

DinosApple · 24/02/2020 07:17

Twice a year, one week camping. One week in the UK.

Kids are now 9 & 10 so we will save for an abroad holiday this year or next. It'll be a rare event so we wanted them to be old enough to a) remember it and b) site see without getting too grumpy!

TendsToHappen · 24/02/2020 07:21

Fairly often - 6 ish times a year? It’s a mix of UK cottages with friends/camping/visiting my parents who live near a beach and short haul AI. Try to get to Center parcs every year.

This year we are doing CPs in Holland for a week at Easter, week in Norfolk in the summer and Lapland weekend in December, a couple of camping trips and stays with my mum and dad 4 or 5 ish times. Next year Disney for 2 weeks so not sure what else we will be able to afford!

Sipperskipper · 24/02/2020 07:22

Maybe once or twice. DD is nearly 3, and have been to Mallorca (with family) and Cornwall each year. Although I think we will give abroad holidays a miss for a few years - feels like a lot of hassle & stress for a week in the sun. Cornwall much more relaxing and fun for us all!

Pregnant now so won’t go on holiday this year, but probably a UK beach holiday next year. Maybe abroad again in 4/5 years perhaps.

okiedokieme · 24/02/2020 07:28

A 1-2 week holiday most summers then 1-2 shorter trips during the year. Increased once I returned to work when they were at primary school. Some years abroad others U.K.

okiedokieme · 24/02/2020 07:30

My mum lives by the coast so we also went there. Kids now grown up so I go as much as possible when I can afford it.
