How often do you take your DC on holidays? We go at different amount each year and wondered what everyone else does.

We're frugal with our holiday spend and our usual pattern is a big holiday (ie abroad, last year USA) every second year. I don't think the kids mind or compare with their friends.

Itsagrandoldteam · 24/02/2020 10:23

My DH gets 5 weeks holiday per year, so we go on holiday for 5 weeks.
This year it is 5, one week holidays.
Last year it was 2, two week holidays and a 1 week.
Depends on where we go.
My DH works very hard so holidays are important to us.

spiderlight · 24/02/2020 10:27

We tend to have one week away in the summer holidays; then DS goes to stay with his grandparents in Dorset for a week (they live near the coast so he basically gets to spend most of the week on the beach with his cousins). We sometimes go camping with friends for a couple of nights, either at Easter or in the summer, and we have a couple of nights with his grandparents at Christmas. He had ten days abroad with the school last year and has the same again next year, so we'll just be self-catering in the UK with our dog this year.

1 week skiing in the winter
10 days camping in summer
My parents live in London... We visit there 3-4 times.
DHs parents live in Yorkshire- another handful of trips
Beavers/Cubs/Scouts- multiple weekends
Visiting friends- several trips
Short UK break if we have time

Multiple trips- but maybe only 3 holidays as such.

hawaiianturtle · 24/02/2020 11:11

Try to do once a year but won't be able to this year as we've booked Orlando for 2021 and with 4 kids it's cost us over 10k so they'll have to sit this year out. Will try to do a few days away in the uk in the summer instead. When growing up it was usually one holiday abroad in the summer and centre parcs in Feb half term. It's much easier to do with less kids.

BlackInk · 24/02/2020 11:13

A week's camping in the UK during the summer hols.
A couple of weekends away visiting family.
A couple of weekend camping trips with Cubs/Scouts.
Maybe a school residential trip.
Maybe another weekend camping or in a holiday cottage with friends.

We don't plan to fly with our children due to the environmental impact, but are hoping to take them to Europe via Eurotunnel in the next couple of years.

peekaboob · 24/02/2020 11:26

Usually we do one week at a relative's house on the south coast and the DC also go off for a week with the NRP so they get two holidays a year.
This year, however, my DM is treating me and my kids to Disneyland, DP is trying to atone himself and is taking me and DD abroad for a week and the kids will also get the south coast as well as a week with NRP. So an extra holiday for all this year.

LuckyLickitung · 24/02/2020 11:35

Last 12 months:
A week abroad
10 days camping in UK
4 days with DH's family (requires a flight/ ferry)
3 scout camps
Overnight city break in UK

If we get a decent summer, we might go camping locally on a spare weekend as a family but last year it was too hot or soggy on any given weekend.

It's more little and often and fairly modest. The transport to get to DH's family makes it seem more holiday like than it is.

Linguaphile · 24/02/2020 11:42

We try to go every time the children have a school break of a week or more. The breakdown is usually at least one week skiing, one bigger two or three week trip in summer, one or two weeks visiting family, and one or two cheap Eurocamp road trip getaways.

Notso · 24/02/2020 11:56

Less than once a year. It's really not a priority for me, definitely more for DH and the children.
Although this year we have three trips planned with the kids and three planned without. I feel uncomfortable just writing that down! I'll probably do very little for a couple of years to recover.
I really enjoy seeing different places and experiencing other cultures but would just rather visit for the day and then go home afterwards Grin

PanicAtTheTesco · 24/02/2020 11:59

we are lucky enough to be able to have a foreign holiday each year. We also usually have a couple of long weekends away in a Premier Inn somewhere for a bit of UK sight seeing.

BrieAndChilli · 24/02/2020 12:00

it varies each year.
Last year - 2 week europe road trip staying at eurocamp, 5 days camping, and then kids went with scouts/cubs a couple of nights away and we went to stay with family for a couple of nights throughout the year,

year before was 3 nights camping and the other scouts/family stuff

year before that we went to a eurocamp in fance.

gingerninja1808 · 24/02/2020 12:02

When we can afford it! Some years once, some years not at all. Never more than once a year. This year I fear is going to be a not-at-all year, as we have just had to get a new boiler :(

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 24/02/2020 12:28

We have three weeks in Summer (family apartment so cheap as chips), then two, four/five day city breaks in Europe and a couple of cheap weekends away in the UK, usually in the Lakes.

DS(13) always comes with us.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 24/02/2020 12:46

Once every few years. Last time was in 2017 when we went to Withernsea. Before that it was 2016 when my mum paid for us all to go to Cornwall aboutd before that it was 2014 when we went to Brid. We're going back to Cornwall in April this year.

Lifesabeach86 · 24/02/2020 12:50

Skiing and a hot holiday every year and then camping trips on top, about 3 or 4 times in the year

MrsJonesAndMe · 24/02/2020 13:18

A week in the summer - stay in the UK and a few other over night stays when we're doing "day trips" that are further than we can travel on a day.

user1487194234 · 24/02/2020 13:30

2 weeks in the sun in summer
Separate week in summer with grandparents, usually in UK
Week at Easter ,usually in UK
Long weekend at Spring half term ,usually city break
Week in Autumn midtermnalways the Canaries

Valkadin · 24/02/2020 13:36

Apart from two years when my anxiety was too bad to fly we always go abroad. Those years we went to North Wales and the other we had a canal boat holiday. DH is well travelled and has done stuff like wild camped in Africa which is a bit much for me. One year we had three trips abroad, one was only a long weekend though. We have relatives in America, Spain and Scandinavia so on some trips we stay with them. We both had jobs with 25 and 30 days leave for many years.

Barbararara · 24/02/2020 13:45

We have a camper van and are off in it every chance we get- at least one weekend a month, every half term and school holiday. We take it to somewhere in Europe for a few weeks during the summer which is our proper holiday. It’s been brilliant for ds who has asd and struggles with change as he gets to explore new places but can retreat to the safety of his own space at any time.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 24/02/2020 13:51

We go away for a week to the IOW every year and have a long weekend away somewhere in the UK.

This year we are going to the new forest, legoland and peppa pig world over easter then 10 nights on the IOW in July. Will probably try and do a long weekend somewhere later in the year.

timeforawine · 24/02/2020 13:52

Abroad 3 times a year

shivbo2014 · 24/02/2020 13:57

Once a year. Either 2 weeks abroad or a week doing a caravan holiday in England. Depending on the finances.

user1333796 · 24/02/2020 14:35

Variation for us too depending on fluctuating income and circumstances over the last 10 years. But typically one week holiday abroad somewhere cheap, one family friendly festival, a week or a few weekends camping, and a couple of mini breaks like single nights in a theme park hotel or a couple of nights in a cheap b&b.The last couple of years it's been this minus the abroad holiday whilst saving for a house. Once we have a house it will mean more abroad holidays or less depending on how much we end up spending on a house! I'm tempted to compromise area in exchange for being able to be the type of family that goes abroad every school holidays for sure, to be honest.

Bringringbring12 · 24/02/2020 14:37

Mine are utterly spoilt on this front.

I take them one Long haul, one Europe, two UK

My ex takes them one long haul, one Europe, one Center Parcs
