How often do you take your DC on holidays? We go at different amount each year and wondered what everyone else does.

We go anywhere between 4-6 tines a year. We go abroad 3 tines in that.

elQuintoConyo · 24/02/2020 07:35

Visit a friend in French countryside near the Pyrenees for a week/10 days either summer or Easter (this year Easter).
Then one or two weeks, separately, camping somewhere cheap. We're in Spain so have all the tent gear and camp during summer holidays (20 june-12 sept.). Mostly in the mountains, near lakes, maybe Andorra this year.

Once every two years or so we fly to UK to visit family, funds-permitting.

TheGreatWave · 24/02/2020 07:37

One UK holiday each year. An additional week every other year,

A main holiday 10 days/2 weeks in the school summer holidays and a short break (usually 4-5 days) at another time. Varies between abroad, UK cottage, camping.

I realised there would be mixed answers as some people can afford more than others, but surprised some people can get away so many time in a year (unless they are all short breaks around a weekend?). DH and I have always had to take most of our a/l at different times to cover as much of the school holidays as we can, so guess others either have way more a/l or more childcare options!

They went abroad 3 times last year. We’ve got 2 booked for this year.
2015, 16, 17 and 18 we holidayed in the U.K-usually 2 camping/caravanning trips a year.

ILiveInSalemsLot · 24/02/2020 08:17

We usually go away in the uk once or twice a year and abroad once.

thefemalelemur · 24/02/2020 08:18

We used to go twice most years, one abroad and one cottage holiday in the UK.

Whome91 · 24/02/2020 08:36

Once a year close to Easter tho we’re. Staying in the U.K. this year. Saying that we visit the in laws a few times a year and stay in a hotel

Mamabear12 · 24/02/2020 08:52

It changes every year depending on plans, events (weddings, important bdays etc). But the last year we traveled abroad 5 times that I can recall. I might be forgetting a trip. But we travel a lot in our family. And it seems the norm amongst my group and the dc school. Everyone seems to travel a lot and have family abroad. I just had a baby so I opted out of the most recent trip (skiing) but dh took the old dc. I won’t travel until baby has had all her vaccinations.

SoloMummy · 24/02/2020 08:56

Think it depends on definition of holiday tbh.

Last year we had a 2 weeks break abroad, 2 long weekends away, 10 days camping and a 10 days UK break.

I'd count that as 3 holidays, but my child would say 5!

SoloMummy · 24/02/2020 08:56

Forgot to add, the camping tends to be annual as do weekends away and UK break, but the abroad more every other year.

joffreyscoffees · 24/02/2020 09:02

Florida every 2 years (although will be 3 years inbrween this time) and we have a caravan that we go to every other weekend and usually a week in the summer. Also think we'll take DD to a Haven or Butlins this year too.

WarIsPeace · 24/02/2020 09:04

As a child we only ever went on holiday every other year, or less, as my dad was self employed.
I feel like once a year is fine but ExH wants to be away every school holidays for camping, festivals etc. I'd rather shit in my hands and clap than go camping.

So my children do once a year for hotel abroad with me and assorted UK trips with their dad.

welshweasel · 24/02/2020 09:06

This year planning abroad 3 times, Center parcs twice, bluestone, couple of random nights away without the kids, and probably another couple of weekend breaks in the UK. I get that we are very lucky to be able to afford this.

inwood · 24/02/2020 09:06

Usually3 weeks In the summer and then a week at Easter and a long weekend in October half term. We go away for weekends to visit family as well where we stay in a hotel but not a holiday as such.

zsazsajuju · 24/02/2020 09:07

I usually go 4 holidays a year with dds - one in uk. Each about a week to 10 days. May half term, February half term. Summer and jewish holidays.

wendz86 · 24/02/2020 09:10

Once a year usually . Their dad usually takes them somewhere too . Not always abroad , includes caravan holidays etc in Uk .

KindKylie · 24/02/2020 09:10

I think it depends what counts as a holiday.

We go away loads, absolutely loads, but mostly for weekends visiting friends and family. So we often stay with them or in Premier Inn type affairs, and it's not v holidayish for me!

Real holidays are much less frequent. My dc have only been a broad a couple of times and had several UK cottage type breaks.

Truth22 · 24/02/2020 09:12

We have 3 kids and love to travel! We usually do 2-3 weeks to North America to ski over Xmas, Spain over May half term, a Disney trip at some point in the spring, a euro trip in the summer and somewhere cheap over Oct half term like Portugal. Also a few wknds away to cities like Dublin or Paris. Also usually Centre Parcs once or twice.

DazzlingDee · 24/02/2020 09:13

As a rule it’s normally 3 times. Whitsun 1 week/Summer 2 weeks/October HT 1 week.

We have an apartment in Spain though so it’s easy/cheaper.

Then an additional 1-2 weekends away like Centre Parcs or Haven, normally with friends

caperplips · 24/02/2020 09:23

It depends, we don't have a set rule. Last year teen dd had a number of breaks and was incredibly lucky - we don't live in the UK so she had a weekend in London with a bunch of friends for a concert (6 teens, 3 mums), a week in Ireland travelling around the west coast in the summer, 2 weeks at a residential camp for a hobby, 4 days in Poland for October midterm.

This year she has been away for a long weekend to a hotel with her friends family. 4 days in Italy for Feb midterm.
We're planning 10 days in Tallinn and Helsinki in the summer and we usually do a city break in Oct / Nov.

She is very lucky and we are fortunate enough to travel a lot. I think of it as one of the advantages of having an only child (not by choice!) now we're at the stage where we can bring one of her friends too which is lovely for her.

Connie222 · 24/02/2020 09:39

Never. Can’t even afford days out anywhere nice sadly, despite both working.

BearSoFair · 24/02/2020 10:01

We haven't been abroad since 2013. In the UK, we try for once a year.

Ikeasucks · 24/02/2020 10:05

Depends but 3/5 times a year perhaps - depends what you’re classing as a holiday.

Greenbutterlfy566 · 24/02/2020 10:11

All types of holidays including weekends etc. Just wondered how often people go as I didn’t think we went enough
