Things you don't get why they are popular?

I will start

Dubai
Magaluf

Why do people in numbers go there?

Skinny jeans. They don't look good on 90% of the population. And yet most of us ( myself included) wear them day in day out.

Every year I get excited when the fash-un magazines tell me kick flares or whatever else that would be more flattering are the new thing in denim. And every year I'm disappointed when they aren't.

...With maybe the exception of Mom jeans which are also having a moment ( but which also make me look bad)

Raffles1981 · 23/02/2020 07:33

Running. Lots of mums here do it but I just cannot get on board. Young women all having the same big lips, and smooth foreheads. Flea bag.

Housewife2010 · 23/02/2020 07:39

Televisions above fire places. Mirrors or pictures look so much better there.
Cars parking outside parking lines.
Almond milk (dreadful for the environment. Other dairy free milk alternatives are available.)
Pod coffee makers
Personalised car number plates
Putting lots of selfies on FB just so you can gets lots of compliments
Selfies
Standing alone outside a tourist destination with a phone on a selfie stick.
Drinking so much that you get a hangover.
Not washing your face in the morning then chatting to me later in the day with sleep in your eyes.
Not teaching your children to say "please" and "thank you".
Anyone not saying "please" and "thank you".
"Wendying" someone.
Putting all your holiday photos on FB while you are there. ( We're in the Maldives with a private jet. Please burgle our empty house).
Talking in great detail about a film/TV series I haven't seen. Tell me a few details of why you enjoyed it do much. If I'm planning to watch it too much detail souls it. If I'm not interested, then all that detail is pointless and dull.
Ditto holidays. I'll be politely interested in what a good time you had, but I don't really want a blow by blow account.
People who put 30+ holiday photos on FB. I'll tick politely, but won't look if there's more than ten.
Tin man highlighter.
Thongs
Kardashian
People referring to "free phone upgrades". (It's not free. You've paid off your phone. If it still works enjoy your reduced phone bills.)
Why so many people can't go to the cinema without lots of noisy, smelly food.

TheVanguardSix · 23/02/2020 07:48

So much of what's already been stated would make my list.

Alcohol of any kind
Love Island
Selfies
Fillers/Botox and all of that crap
Fortresses on wheels

Oh and the social media bandwagon everyone jumps on.
A hashtag is born from the ultimate tragedy or crisis (suicide, rape, typhoons, civil war) and that hashtag movement will lead you anywhere and everywhere (it's a free pass to Selfieville) but never towards its (supposedly) intended purpose. I know your grieving and apparently you're gutted, but seeing your dancing shoes or your sunkissed body on a beach and using this as some sort of 'connect the dots from my achy breaky heart to a family's very personal, never--gonna-go-away tragedy' gives me the rage. And so many of the 'courageous' women that pumped helium into #MeToo are the very women who enabled sexism, sexual assault, and harassment in the industry that fed them. Hashtag movements attract parasites.

Identity politics. In theory it's great. In practice, it's polarizing as fuck.

Realpolitik. It's ruining everything and it is far removed from its origins.

TheVanguardSix · 23/02/2020 07:52

housewife2010 I think I love you. Grin

NeverGotMyPuppy · 23/02/2020 07:53

These threads. Can be summarised by 'people like different things' and 'some people think they are better than others by not liking certain things'.
