@peekaboob I'm flying into newcastle from tenerife tonight..now all I'll be thinking is I hope the mn radar watchers know where I'm ending up Grin

notimagain · 16/02/2020 08:46

Very windy here under one of Edinburgh’s flight paths. Might get a go-around or two today?

Airport forecast is for strong winds, chance of gusts up to 45 knots this evening, but the wind direction is always predicted to be out of the south west, which means it will be aligned pretty much with the landing runway so no signs of a major crosswind issue. Doesn't mean there might not be go arounds due to other issues, e.g. turbulence but I'd be surprised if they are going to be as frequent at Edinburgh as it looks like it is going to be elsewhere.

MsJaneAusten · 16/02/2020 08:47

Those of you who use flight radar, do you use the paid for version or the freebie? I got it ages ago after one of these threads but I just don’t ‘get it’. How do you know what to watch?

JasperRising · 16/02/2020 08:53

Lost you guys over night!

A quick query. At the end of the last thread, someone said that Heathrow doesn't accept diversion except in an emergency. Is that just at the moment because of the conditions or is that always the case? Because it's too busy? If the latter, are there other airports that you will never get diverted to (emergency excepted)?

Freeshavocado · 16/02/2020 08:56

@MsJaneAusten I have the free one but DP has the paid one, to find a flight to watch I just look at the map near an airport I want to watch and click on planes in the area to find which are about to land, you can then see their flight path so can see if they've had to divert from somewhere else etc, I then keep an eye on it as they come in to land to see if they make it or not.

It’s always too busy...pretty much saturated on a normal day...similarly Gatwick doesn’t “like” accepting diversions. An example from another part of the world would be JFK.

That said if there is a genuine emergency and the requirement is to land ASAP then any airport is pretty much obliged to accept the flight...

tabletray · 16/02/2020 09:15

Just to add to that re Heathrow, it wasn't busy last night because it was late. They still wouldn't accept a diversion though because they have a restriction on landings/take offs between 11:30pm and 6am. So even where the airport has no activity, they would still be reluctant to accept a driver soon because that then affects their annual 'allowance'

Ohdeariedear · 16/02/2020 09:20

@notimagain, yes it’s a nicely aligned of the wind today at Ed, needs a good northerly to liven things up! I tend to get stuff going overhead when it’s an easterly so a nice quiet day for me today!

happycamper11 · 16/02/2020 09:23

Phew 😅 found you all!

happycamper11 · 16/02/2020 09:26

I noticed it full when I was pondering whether an empty plane (one relocating from a diverted to original destination airport) would be harder to land due to weight difference with no passengers or luggage. I think we need a pilot AMA thread to run alongside if anyone knows one? Lol

notimagain · 16/02/2020 09:35

I think there are a couple already here....

Weight of the aircraft can make a minor difference, but not that much.

tabletray · 16/02/2020 09:52

The individual gusts are what really make the difference. An empty 737 V a full 737 isn't going to feel that different against an 80 mph gust. You could argue that the heavier, larger aircraft have more stability against the wind. You certainly feel 'less' even on take off in an A380 compared to an A320. It depends where on the aircraft and how far into the landing the plane is when that 80mph gust hits that will determine whether it lands or goes around.

DuckyMcDuck · 16/02/2020 10:49

Found you again (have name changed since last weekend).

We saw friends last night and I was telling them all about Flightradar and Big Jet tv. They hid their interest very well and did seem to be backing away slowly from me Grin Grin

TabbyStar · 16/02/2020 11:50

My DD is a bit worried about me Ducky!

MyBootsAreMuddy · 16/02/2020 14:03

Emergency alert on the Heathrow - Miami AA57, It circled over Dorset/Devon coast, looks like it's on it's way back to Heathrow now.

Dandydoodle · 16/02/2020 14:09

@MyBootsAreMuddy, did you find that out because the plane icon turned red?

42isthemeaning · 16/02/2020 14:11

Just been plane spotting at EDI and didn't see any evidence of major wind shear (awwww) and all lovely text book landings / take offs. Was hoping for a couple of go arounds! Grin

MyBootsAreMuddy · 16/02/2020 14:17

Yes the icon turned red. But we also have mergency alerts set up at mo as PIL are currently in their way back from Canada. It looks like it's in the line to land at Heathrow now (the Miami one).

Dandydoodle · 16/02/2020 14:19

Thanks MyBoots. How do you set up an emergency alert?

AFingerofFudge · 16/02/2020 14:24

Just landed at Knock Airport (west of Ireland) on 2nd attempt!! Not normally a nervous flyer but that was a bit of a test!!!

MyBootsAreMuddy · 16/02/2020 14:34

On the app there is dark grey bar bottom middle of screen, click on the alert icon (a bell). You can set the emergency alert there, select squawk 7700 to be alerted to emergency situations and squawk 7600 if you want to be alerted to communication failures.

Dandydoodle · 16/02/2020 14:39

Thanks MyBoots. We have so much information available to us these days. It's actually quite scary.

MyBootsAreMuddy · 16/02/2020 14:50

It is indeed, we got so caught up watching the miami one, that we missed PIL Vancouver flight land........ just before itBlush which was the whole reason we were watching today in the first place!

Papergirl1968 · 16/02/2020 15:31

A family on that plane from Tenerife that couldn’t land at Gatwick or Birmingham last night, and ended up in Manchester, are quoted on BBC news online, saying how scary it was and that it cost them £450 to get home by taxi Shock

NoGravyForYou · 16/02/2020 15:42

Will they get refunded that money??? I wouldn't have £450 at the end of a holiday to pay for a taxi
