If you"re 50, how long is your hair?

I've recently gone from longish to shoulder length (one hand length from hairline at back). Thinking of going shorter, just long enough to tie back, or even shorter, but is it an aging thing?

Dye my hair at home for grey, although have lightened by a shade or two from almost black.

Don't know when people have their hair cut shorter, don't want to go too granny too soon. So if you're 50 (give or take a year or two) how long is your hair?

I am 53 and hair is bra strap length

I am not cutting it any time soon

BoccaBaciata · 13/02/2020 18:10

I'm almost 48 with shoulder length hair. I'm growing it - I want to get it to at least bra strap length.

There are no rules. No one has to 'have their hair cut shorter'. Wear your hair how you want to - waist length, bobbed, skinhead, dyed purple, blonde highlights, natural grey, whatever you fancy. Why would your age dictate your hairstyle?

goingoverground · 13/02/2020 18:16

I'm not quite half a century yet but my hair is waist length. I'm not planning on cutting it any time soon. If I do, it won't be because of my age.

I went to a school reunion last year and pretty much all of the women had the same length hair as they did when they were at school - mostly long hair. Only maybe 1 or 2 had changed their hair length drastically. Out of my friends, most people seem to stick with length (long/mid/short), even if they change style. Of those that have changed, I think more have grown shorter styles out rather than gone for the chop.

I'm 53 and hair is collar bone length

myidentitymycrisis · 13/02/2020 18:19

I'm 53 and my hair is short. Cut it about 2 and a half years ago. Mainly due to wanting to grow out the colour.

I like it short and for me its reliving my youth as I had a short cut in the early nineties. When I get bored of this I would definitely
consider growing it back to chin or shoulder length though

NotMeNoNo · 13/02/2020 18:21

My hair is short but I had it that way before I was 50 because a pixie cut suits me better than longer hair.

reginafelangee · 13/02/2020 18:22

I didn't know there were age related rules to determine hair length.

AnyFucker · 13/02/2020 18:24

Just long enough to tie back. I have grown it recently from a close crop.

Wotrewelookinat · 13/02/2020 18:25

50 in June, have had very short cropped hair (not granny style!) for 15 years. And I don’t dye it.

WorraLiberty · 13/02/2020 18:26

Shoulder length

I won't be cutting it shorter at all unless it goes weird/frizzy or something and even then, I'll probably straighten it.

Ted27 · 13/02/2020 18:27

I'm 55, I have very short hair, but I always have so thats nothing new. I henna it so its quite a rich colour, unusual particularly when its first done

ChocoChunk1 · 13/02/2020 18:27

My mum has the attitude that older women should have short hair. I am 42 and cut off my long hair last year. I very much regret it and am now growing it out again.

madcatladyforever · 13/02/2020 18:27

I'm 57 and it's waist length. I have a friend in her 60's who can sit on hers.
I don't think you need to cut your hair because you are older.
The only reason I have recently taken a few inches off is because it needs to look nice and thick and well kept, when I was younger I could get away with looking like a hippy but not so much now.
I get my grey professionally highlighted too so if I have a meeting or an interview I can put it up and look smart.

Honeyroar · 13/02/2020 18:28

About 5” below my collar bone. You’d say it was long hair. I keep cutting it to shoulder length every now and again, but it suits me long and it’s good, thick, glossy hair - one of my best features. So it seems a shame to cut it.

goingoverground · 13/02/2020 18:28

I think it used to be the law that once you hit 30, you got the same short, bubble perm as your mum and grandmother. You were stuck with the same style until it went totally white, then you could mix things up and dye it blue, if you fancied. Thankfully that has gone the same way has having all your teeth pulled out on marriage and getting a set of falsies as a wedding gift.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 13/02/2020 18:29

Bra strap length and pink and rose gold coloured Grin
Oh I'm 52 and always wanted to have pink hair so I did

Gilead · 13/02/2020 18:32

61, Bra strap length, mainly still black but some grey streaks. Not cutting it.

UltimateIrritant · 13/02/2020 18:34

I got my hair cut to chin length after years of having it long. On me shorter is a lot more flattering as my longer hair made everything look longer including my newly formed jowls!

grannycake · 13/02/2020 18:35

Collar bone length and completely grey now. Just long enough to put up if I need to

GrumpyHoonMain · 13/02/2020 18:35

My mil is 67 and has thick, glossy, hip length hair. When she dyes it for special occasions you can’t tell it’s not her natural hair colour because her hair texture is still that of a young woman.

Blobby10 · 13/02/2020 18:35

51 and hair rests on my shoulders but will be a couple of inches longer before I have it cut again. Don’t dye it but am lucky enough to not have too much grey yet. Couldn’t cope with not being able to put it into a ponytail as I go to the gym every day . Had very short hair once when I was 17 and hated it- my face is too round and fat for short hair and needs a fringe and longer length 😁

bodgeitandscarper · 13/02/2020 18:38

54 and my hair is bra strap length.

cissyandbessy · 13/02/2020 18:38

Am 47 and have waist length hair that I grew the dyed dark brown colour out of last 4 years. Someone on their 20's said it was subversive the other day! I think it looks quite witchy at times but I don't care. Love it long.

Floralnomad · 13/02/2020 18:38

I’m 54 and my hair is in a short , scruffy type bob I had it cut off about a year ago . I’ve never dyed / coloured my hair and it’s now a grey / blonde mix . I had had it long for a long time but it’s very fine , didn’t grow much and as I generally wear a hat of some description was a bit pointless and time consuming .

Laska2Meryls · 13/02/2020 18:43

62... very short pixie currently pink with violet streaks. No age range for hair types ...
