I’m doing some family tree research and can’t find this person - it’s definitely a male. What do you think?

Can anyone help me decipher this signature?

I haven’t actually read the letter (although I really should - I find historical letters so interesting!) but if there’s a military connection I would research on websites specifically set up for military history. US and U.K. to start off with.

I haven't read back over the thread so apologies if it has already been suggested but could he perhaps have had the first name Hamish?

MacavityTheDentistsCat · 14/02/2020 19:17

Ignore that. Have now just started to read back and seen that suggestion already.

My mum is German and she's trying to decipher and is a bit confused by the full stop after the first name. She was wondering if she could see more of the text?

BurneyFanny · 14/02/2020 19:23

Well, except that Kythwitz doesn't really look like a German name. Ky- isn't a letter combination that really gets used in German.

Itslookinglikeabeautifulday · 14/02/2020 19:28

Judging by the last few letters of the word “affectionately” written above it, I’d say the name ends in “ty”. (I’d be looking at the handwriting elsewhere on the page to decipher the entire name)

meow1989 · 14/02/2020 19:32

Any chance it starts Kz?
Kz.h..ts?

HouseOfCrayCray · 14/02/2020 19:38

I see Kyltwutz

LaBelleSauvage123 · 14/02/2020 19:38

For posters who are asking, I’ve posted the whole letter earlier in the thread.

Is he a John with the nickname Jack?

totallyradllama · 14/02/2020 19:47

Sorry I had missed the letter earlier in the thread, sometimes when you scroll it jumps bits.

Still over-invested!

LaBelleSauvage123 · 14/02/2020 19:49

That’s brilliant thank you! Yes he is, as was his father.

I think it ends in ty, the long stroke belongs to the last up stroke not the middle one

Words · 14/02/2020 22:42

Kylb...?
I think he's added the long line after to underline 'affectionately'

Words · 14/02/2020 22:45

Agree could end in t z

Kali tzigane?

ButterflyWitch · 14/02/2020 23:01

Could the first name be Harris?

RiftGibbon · 14/02/2020 23:06

Would a Harals Kjbelson (as transcribed) be a possibility? Born c.1884 and shown on a passenger list leaving Liverpool for New York on the Teutonic in 1902.

ButterflyWitch · 14/02/2020 23:17

Harris Kyducuty?

ButterflyWitch · 14/02/2020 23:41

Kyllucuts?

StinkyWizleteets · 15/02/2020 00:13

Hans kylbunz ???

LaBelleSauvage123 · 15/02/2020 07:31

Riftgibbon - did you find that person on ancestry? I can’t find anyone of that name.

I really think I’ve exhausted all possibilities starting Ky that appear on ancestry. I don’t subscribe to any other genealogy sites but have got the premium subscription on ancestry so can search worldwide.

LaBelle - I am on Findmypast. But some of the transcriptions are a little off.
If you can see passenger lists on ancestry you should be able to find the ship and compare info?
I am not on the computer right now but can ping you what I found, later.
I think the correct name lies somewhere in the mix here. I tried to look at the list that was scanned in, but didn't get time to look thoroughly to come up with alternatives to what the transcriber had written. Again will try to do that later.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 15/02/2020 09:56

Thank you Rift
