I’m doing some family tree research and can’t find this person - it’s definitely a male. What do you think?

I think the cross bar might be a red herring - it's very similar to the line under the signature and I wonder if the author was a bit premature with his finishing flourish....

There are two crossed Ts in the surname - one in the middle and one near the end.

It looks just one to me, goes all the way across though.

I'm wondering if the first name could be Harris - surname I think begins Kylb and ends with a y but wondered if the first letter could be R?

You may find this link useful if the person is British: britishsurnames.co.uk/surnames/A/

Good luck tracking him down.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 11/02/2020 17:02

The second letter of the surname doesn’t look like the y of affectionately but there are other ys in the text of the letter that do look like it.

Hans Kylburgh ?

Em308 · 11/02/2020 17:03

Can you post more of the writing for handwriting comparisons?

Lucindainthesky · 11/02/2020 17:04

You should upload this to rootschat, there is a dedicated handwriting board and the posters on there are experts!

Noflora · 11/02/2020 17:05

Is there more writing for for us to see more letter formations? Might the last letter be a German ß

Satsuma2 · 11/02/2020 17:06

Hans Kyctuutz

Hans Kyltuutz

TheVanguardSix · 11/02/2020 17:06

It's definitely Hans. I'd be looking at Dutch and German connections, not British. I am thrown. I've been down this road with my own family tree which is German and Czech and I've eventually gotten there, as will you, OP. You'll have to comb through different fonts (or variations on Sutterlin, as I'd mentioned before).

LaBelleSauvage123 · 11/02/2020 17:09

These are all great suggestions, thank you. This branch of my family did seem to travel widely - the letter is headed Poste Restante Alexandria. Will take a photo of a bit more of it

If it's German or Dutch the full name of this person may be Johannes or similar rather than Hans

It says Yours Affectionately above the signature. Would it be a German name writing the letter in English?

Middleagedmidwife · 11/02/2020 17:11

Hans kylhaus, the word affectionately has been underlined, making it look like a ‘t’ at end I think

NetballHoop · 11/02/2020 17:12

I think the final letter might be an eszett search for handwritten eszett and look at the images.

Sidge · 11/02/2020 17:14

Hans Kylthurtz

Stuffofawesome · 11/02/2020 17:15

Look like Harris then Kyth....to me

BurneyFanny · 11/02/2020 17:15

I think the end is tuntz. The start is a bit odd because Ky- is a bit of an odd start for a traditional German surname.

PineappleDanish · 11/02/2020 17:20

The first name looks like an abbreviation to me - really common in the Victorian times and you'll see Jas for James, Jos for Joseph, Robt for Robert etc.

Harold? Or another name with Han.....d?

DontCallMeShitley · 11/02/2020 17:21

Kylhuetz

PineappleDanish · 11/02/2020 17:22

And have you tried a han Ky search on ancestry?

Ffsnosexallowed · 11/02/2020 17:24

Looks like Harris something

LaBelleSauvage123 · 11/02/2020 17:30

Have tried all these - no luck ☹️
