I’m doing some family tree research and can’t find this person - it’s definitely a male. What do you think?

Can anyone help me decipher this signature?

my daughter in Germany has many older German people as her patients. This looks like the old German script to me so I've asked her if any of her patients can decipher.

Try this on google for many options.
There is a Kyllum in there
Surnames of the United Kingdom: A Concise Etymological Dictionary
Best of luck with the search. Let us know if you figure it out. Smile

Thislittlefinger thank you so much - and to everyone who is trying to help. The Hon S Kylbarry hasn’t thrown up any clues sadly. 🤞for your daughter!

Op can you go backwards or sideways ? E.g. Who was the letter to ? If he is definitely a relative, then can you go back a generation or two, start from that and look at all children and who they marry ?
Is this letter the only information you have ?

LaBelleSauvage123 · 12/02/2020 15:11

The letter is to my great grandmother whose maiden name was Lewis. I’ve tried looking at all her siblings and can’t find anything relevant. But every second girl seems to have been called Mary, Margaret, Maisie, May or Mysie which makes it complicated!

So a friend, or suitor perhaps, rather than a relative ? That makes it more difficult that the name is unclear.
I am going to look at it again with fresh eyes...
I also suggest taking it into wherever locally to you keeps records, as the curators are normally pretty good at deciphering older handwriting.

GeordieRacer · 12/02/2020 18:44

Kyttwitz? Kyllwitz?

Alpineponyclub · 12/02/2020 18:46

I think it looks like Kyburz...

totallyradllama · 12/02/2020 19:22

Aargh I'm invested in this now! Can you post any more of the letter to show how other words are written?

RiftGibbon · 12/02/2020 20:12

On the lower left hand side of the letter is a PS, which when I zoom in is quite difficult to read, but I notice that it appears to have initials below it - they look like HK?
The letter at the end of the first name is like, but not exactly the same as the letter E in one of the lines above where the writer is talking about an engine (see the word 'large') but that doesn't give me any clues to a feasible name. The last letter of the surname might be an N if you look at the word 'Mediterranean'.

RiftGibbon · 12/02/2020 20:50

H Kylburn?

LaBelleSauvage123 · 12/02/2020 22:34

Do you think the first name could be James?

Totallyradllama- if you scroll back a couple of pages I’ve posted the whole letter

Surname looks like Kylbuntz to me. Throwing up various variations on passenger lists in Ancestry. Might be worth checking them for transcription errors?

bitheby · 12/02/2020 23:59

Changed my mind. Now think Kylburnly more likely having seen how he writes y.

HeronLanyon · 13/02/2020 07:00

Kychowsky ? Or similar. I’m hating all of this loops in the middle.
I’m quite liking the Kych beginning. ‘Owsky’ is not good - I think my k is actually an l.
What was he thinking about dashing it off in that way!

Bloodybridget · 13/02/2020 07:50

I haven't any really helpful suggestions, but I wonder if it's Hans C. Kyl-something.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/02/2020 10:57

Now I think the first name is just Han, with a little decorative curl at the end. I don’t think that is an S.
Am still mulling over the Kyl.....

SirVixofVixHall · 13/02/2020 11:07

Han Kylhuul ?

SirVixofVixHall · 13/02/2020 11:08

Or Kilhul ?

MashedSpud · 13/02/2020 11:15

Hans Kyl then b (we were taught handwriting in the 70’s and b was “open” with a flick), u then maybe a c with the last letter looking like a y, like above in “affectionately “.

CustardCremedeMenthe · 13/02/2020 11:17

Doesn't the full stop after the first name imply it is an abbreviation ?

SirVixofVixHall · 13/02/2020 11:30

Yes, the full stop does suggest that. I think there is a curlicue, so the name is Han, short for Hanbury ? Johannes? Harold ? Initials are HK, so Johannes seems less likely.

SirVixofVixHall · 13/02/2020 11:35

So Kyl bwt , buut, buul, huwt, huul, huut That letter after the L looks most like an h to me but could also be a b .
Or small possibility of Kyth, so Kythurt etc, or Kythuul

SirVixofVixHall · 13/02/2020 11:36

Annoyingly his handwriting is so easy to read ! Yet the signature is so tricky.
