Been geeking this morning on the number of flights having to go around

Noticed several Gatwick and Luton flights diverting to Stanstead

Check out DI7018 JFK- Gatwick

Two attempts at Gatwick, seemed to be heading for Stanstead, but now the Norwegian airlines crew seem to be taking everyone home with them!

I am terrified of flying but have an obsession with planes. I'm actually finding this live stream strangely reassuring.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 09/02/2020 10:45

Thanks to whoever mentioned Big Jet TV - fabulous! What is it about planes that sends a little shiver down your back when you see one take off???

chomalungma · 09/02/2020 10:46

Tom985 trying again at Manchester

Credit where credits due it's DP who has been sat watching Big Jet TV (his favourite Sunday morning hobby, windy or not!), I saw this thread pop up so thought I'd let you all know Smile

disappointed101 · 09/02/2020 10:52

Thanks @Freshavocado my morning sorted!

JasperRising · 09/02/2020 10:52

Does anyone know how it is decided which planes will divert and which will keep going around? Do some divert without even trying? Is there a max number of attempts you can make before you go or is it based on how much fuel you have left? Presumably if you go around too many time then it must have a knock on affect on where you can divert to?

The logistics in bad weather with all the different airlines and airports must be an absolute nightmare (and I find them fascinating because I have no idea how you would sort them all out).

VirtualHamster · 09/02/2020 10:57

The only time I've been on a plane where it's had to abort 2 landings I've been asleep through the whole event. I wondered why the applause was so enthusiastic when we did land.

The pilot decides. If they get hit by a gust they might go around and if not they will land. 3 attempts before a diversion is standard although some will do 4 and some only 2. Sometimes it's not worth the extra rule so they divert straight away. Much more complex but that's the basics

JasperRising · 09/02/2020 11:03

smashstore thanks! Presumably there's a point at which they can't abort any more because they are too low? Saw the little propeller plane on big jet TV which was properly Shock but it seemed like in the end the pilot had no choice but to land somehow because they were so low.

smashstore · 09/02/2020 11:04

No they can touch the runway and still pull up if they need to 'touch and go'

chomalungma · 09/02/2020 11:06

It is horrible out there at the moment.

I would hate to be in a plane now.
Or a ship.

I wonder how Dover is today?

PineappleDanish · 09/02/2020 11:08

The diversion location will also depend on where the airline has ground crew or staff to manage the passengers. So as Virgin alreadty fly from Glasgow, easy to divert a plane there rather than (for example) Newcastle. And that'll be why the plane diverted to Copenhagen, or back to where it came from.

TonOfLead · 09/02/2020 11:11

Was also going to mention Big Jet TV on YouTube. I've lost almost 2 hours of my morning on it.

cricketmum84 · 09/02/2020 11:13

I've just been watching an Edinburgh to Birmingham that's turned around just above Manchester and gone back up to Edinburgh!

JasperRising · 09/02/2020 11:16

My admiration for pilots is rapidly increasing watching these planes land at Heathrow... Nerves of steel! And so much training (it's not as if landing in a storm is something they get to do for real every day)

cricketmum84 · 09/02/2020 11:16

@chomalungma there is a big ship - the pride of hull stuck in the Humber estuary at the moment getting rocked about a bit as it can't dock. I would not like to be on that one!!

OddestSock · 09/02/2020 11:22

The Orlando Manchester flight which was due to arrive in this morning ended up being diverted to Azores...

Chage · 09/02/2020 11:22

LS842 has just had to abort a landing and come up again. Only a little plane!

Chage · 09/02/2020 11:24

EK17 from Dubai has also aborted!

Froq · 09/02/2020 11:30

Whoever mentioned big jet tv owes me a Sunday morning Grin

smashstore · 09/02/2020 11:31

The Orlando Manchester flight which was due to arrive in this morning ended up being diverted to Azores...

The flight diverted because of a medical emergency.

OliviaBenson · 09/02/2020 11:31

The Azores?! Blimey, that's about 4hrs away!

bookworm14 · 09/02/2020 11:34

EK15 (A380 from Dubai) just aborted at Gatwick.

MrsFezziwig · 09/02/2020 11:34

Thanks for the heads up about Big Jet TV - that’s another huge chunk out of my life spoken for Grin

eurochick · 09/02/2020 11:38

I live quite near Gatwick and can confirm it's bloody blowy here! I've been on a plane that took three attempts at landing (not wind related - other reasons) and it was a very uncomfortable half hour! I've also landed in Dublin in heavy winds and people were puking all around me. I don't envy those passengers.
