Been geeking this morning on the number of flights having to go around

Noticed several Gatwick and Luton flights diverting to Stanstead

Check out DI7018 JFK- Gatwick

Two attempts at Gatwick, seemed to be heading for Stanstead, but now the Norwegian airlines crew seem to be taking everyone home with them!

Goodness. That FlyBe pilot deserves a medal. I cannot begin to imagine what being a passenger on that was like.

NaturallyEden · 09/02/2020 21:42

Oh thanks, i haven't got the app yet. This could be dangerous!

happycamper11 · 09/02/2020 21:45

What's this big 747 with no info. New to this so don't know if it's normal

@happycamper11 That is a US Defence Transporter I think (from googling)

Fighter jets in squadron or trailing another plane (hard to tell)

Haworthia · 09/02/2020 21:55

Kalitta Air are cargo planes I think. Looking at the photo, the 747 has no windows, so almost certainly a freighter.

smashstore · 09/02/2020 22:08

Yes the cargo plane has no info simply because flight radar doesn't know it.

Overnight a BA flight has broken a transatlantic record.

ANd does anyone know why there seems to be 100 flights from Hong Kong all landing 5 mins apart?

Redcherries · 10/02/2020 07:03

Did anyone watch the ba868 come in around 14.30, we were on it and the pilot did brilliantly but it was a hell of a landing, curious how it looked outside of the plane. I had prepared myself with wine! It was the quietest landing I’ve been on, no one in the cabin spoke for about half an hour, think we circled a fair amount but it was hard to tell with the cloud cover.

notimagain · 10/02/2020 07:06

Where into?

As a general point due to time zones and landing/take-off curfews there's a lot of "tidal" flow on some trunk routes (e.g; between europe and the eastern seaboard of the States).

Similarly there's a whole wave of evening (HKG local time) departures out of Hong Kong that head for Europe, arriving early AM Europe time..For example I think there's at least one Cathy and two BA flights that are scheduled to arrive into Heathrow around 5 or 6 AM and their are probably others..For similar reasons you'll see the BA12 and the BA 16 from Singapore arriving within 10-15 minutes of each other, plus perhaps a Singapore ( ?the 322 or 321).

nakedavengeragain · 10/02/2020 07:36

Living on the Heathrow flight path I can tell you that I've spent many an awake 4.30am listening to all the Far East flights arrive into LHR and watching them on flight radar!

The separation is just 45 seconds and they are all 747s and 777s so once you're awake you're awake!

TabbyStar · 10/02/2020 07:42

Red you can go to Big Jet TV on YouTube and watch the Storm Ciara recording, though it may not be easy to find your landing. I've attached Flightradar24 pics, only a small circle. Flight back is BA869.

Thanks Tabby, I had spent a bit of time watching the live video in grim fascination but opted not to watch before we left, DH and I watched a few this morning, I can't believe we got home. I would say though being in a narrow body certainly lessened the impact for us. And yup, the 869, I glanced quickly at my app and noted the outbound.

chomalungma · 10/02/2020 08:39

I love what the guy was wearing at the start of the filming. Definitely set up for wind and rain.

TabbyStar · 10/02/2020 08:39

It was definitely the larger jets that were having the most difficulty. Glad you made it back safely. I'm glad I was just on my sofa yesterday!

sashh · 10/02/2020 09:08

@notimagain

Was that to me? LHR consecutive landings BA, BA, CP

Redcherries · 10/02/2020 09:28

I think our crew were quite pleased when we touched down, I’d commented to one I was numbing the anxiety and he said he wished he could too, but they’d seen the weather on the way out to us.

We had the option to rebook tomorrow which would have suited me, I had my work with me and we’d been upgraded to a huge suite, Dh wanted to get back though. Was very glad to get home to the sofa and pjs for the evening though, it made for a very long day.

notimagain · 10/02/2020 09:32

Sashh

Yes it was, still getting the hang of this place...sorry if there was any confusion.

The 2 BAs and Cathy all arriving from HKG around the same time is fairly normal.

As another Fwiw on this subject getting the long haul arrivals into London early makes it easier for passengers to catch short haul connecting flights on to the rest of the UK or into Europe...

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 10/02/2020 10:43

We are a family of AV geeks. For those enjoying FR24 and feeling a bit hooked, can I suggest a scanner radio?? We bought one a year ago, and have totally fallen down the rabbit hole of lugging into ATC and the planes overhead. Totally legal if the radio is just a scanner I.e. you cant talk on it. We regularly go spotting and can hear what's happening, go arounds, issues etc. Its fascinating stuff.....and has inspired my DD on her future career choices!

Cherryblossomandcornflakes · 10/02/2020 11:52

Our flight was due leave Gatwick at 1pm yesterday, I think we are actually going to leave tonight, around 32 hours late. Most of us were put into a hotel but it was bedlam, no organisation or information, no staff from the airline at all.

Papergirl1968 · 10/02/2020 12:23

Just jumping on here to say how much I enjoyed this thread yesterday, and the link to the live footage from Heathrow.
I can’t do links but the Daily Mail online has some footage from onboard a plane which tried to land five times at Amsterdam before giving up, with a passenger screaming hysterically (sorry, but I’d have been tempted to slap her!) Grin

TabbyStar · 10/02/2020 12:35

Ah, you don't know what experiences or trauma people have had that leads them to behave in certain ways. I've heard some horrific stories from women, there's usually something that explains their behaviour.

smashstore · 10/02/2020 12:39

Sensationalist nonsense from the DM. The aircraft made 2 attempts one on runway 18 and one on runway 22. It also aborted very early at another attempt on runway 22. It didn't even circle (hold) for 5 circuits. It literally arrived, attempted and left.
