Been geeking this morning on the number of flights having to go around

Noticed several Gatwick and Luton flights diverting to Stanstead

Check out DI7018 JFK- Gatwick

Two attempts at Gatwick, seemed to be heading for Stanstead, but now the Norwegian airlines crew seem to be taking everyone home with them!

Why did that BA plane land and take off again? It looked it was properly down on the runway.

The folk at Big Jet TV were saying it looked like it was going off the runway onto the grass and speculating that it was too avoid that.

windymillersmill · 09/02/2020 19:40

to not too! Not sure what is wrong with my brain typing tonight.

smashstore · 09/02/2020 19:42

Lots of non US traffic goes into PWK.

"Why did that BA plane land and take off again? It looked it was properly down on the runway."

As I posted a while back, most probably either there was concern they were drifting off the side of the runway due to the crosswind, or they touched down beyond the marked touchdown zone, which means there's a risk of not having enough runway left to stop on, especially f the surface is wet...

In any event the process is called a "baulked landing" and whilst hopefully it's not something many passengers will experience it is something that these days pilots at many airlines do routinely practice in the simulator.

I'm back... and still glued... had to run some errands earlier, coincidentally up to just by Heathrow and there was a disappointing lack of planes for DS to point at!

I've tried to catch up, but may have missed something so apologies if this point has already been made, but with regards to diversions, e.g. the TAM plane from Sao Paolo to Heathrow which diverted to Barcelona, airlines will normally have a first choice designated diversion airport which would be one at which they typically have a hub or at least fly to. Clearly they need to have enough fuel and suitable conditions to get there, plus the divert airport has to accept them. But far better to arrive unscheduled at an airport where they have ground staff and possibly flight crew able to help.

chomalungma · 09/02/2020 20:11

That touch and go landing is top video on BBC

One heck of a way to spend an afternoon. I feel for anyone in the wrong place at the moment, or trapped on a ferry at sea in these conditions.

notimagain · 09/02/2020 20:15

Very true, and there's the additional point that apparently an added complication this PM was that many of the obvious choices for diversion airfields just outside the area effected by the storm were full to capacity and weren't accepting any further arrivals. That explains some of the longer diversions people were seeing on FR24....

ElloBrian · 09/02/2020 20:35

What SHOULD be the top viewed video today is that FlyBe flight (the one with the propellers) which landed in the most extraordinary way earlier. Does anyone have a video clip they can link to? It was amazing.

Sexnotgender · 09/02/2020 20:46

Any idea if Birmingham airport has been affected at all?

chomalungma · 09/02/2020 20:47

This is the Fly Be Flight

Fire and rescue are attending this Swiss flight LX1255 at Zurich.

I was testing out the emergency squawk alert on Flightradar24.

I was on a flybe Glasgow to Exeter flight earlier. It was pretty scary stuff coming into land but our pilot touched down perfectly. 👏👏👏

peekaboob · 09/02/2020 21:18

Off topic but can anyone explain what this is? There are a few in the Caribbean

Thank you @chomalungma and @Sexnotgender ! That is precisely the one. I hope that pilot got a pat on the back from their management. Remarkable.

windymillersmill · 09/02/2020 21:28

Somebody on the jet tv channel on youtube commented about whether the Flybe one was a plane or a kite! Those pilots are so skilled, it's amazing what they have managed to do today.

Freeshavocado · 09/02/2020 21:28

@ElloBrian they provide WiFi to remote areas, I think it's called something like project loon if you want to google further.

Haworthia · 09/02/2020 21:33

Yes, Project Loon! Do a Google image search, they’re amazing.

NaturallyEden · 09/02/2020 21:34

@Haworthia What is the Swaqk function?! That sounds interesting...

Haworthia · 09/02/2020 21:39

@NaturallyEden Tap on “alerts” in the app and you can set it up.
