Alone in foreign country and feeling really low

Sorry for the call for help... but I’m by myself in a foreign country 6 hours ahead, my partner in UK is asleep and I’m struggling quite a lot with low mood/anxiety. No doubt because I’m all by myself and I’m panicking about things. I just want to be at home.

And bugger the money. Book the massage. Treat yourself!

Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 02:21

Cute! Well I did download Sex Education series 2 but I should probably save that for when I don’t have internet, maybe the airport or plane.

Not sure...

I watched first series of You, not the second. It’s easy watching!

Hi Op. I can relate to what you are going through. I've had dreadful lows traveling on my own. Something about taking yourself out of any known, familiar context. I find the benefits come once I return home. The knowledge that I adventured on my own and survived gives me a new, perspective on my life and I generally feel happier and stronger. I hope this is the case for you.

lopdedop · 09/02/2020 02:32

Exactly. Very easy watching.
After a face full of yummy carbs, a couple of rums, you'll watch a half an episode of something and have a lovely sleep , I hope!
I'm craving pasta now..

Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 02:38

Thanks @tenredthings. I am hoping so. I will see on Tuesday!

I was going to have a few drinks but I don’t want to get tipsy and over emotional!

I've been there. I remember being in Spain and being too nervous to order something to eat, so I was just wandering around getting hungrier and hungrier. It was awful.

Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 03:11

@LoveIsLovely thanks for your message. Yeah it’s awful isn’t it.

BuddhaAtSea · 09/02/2020 05:10

Yup!
I got woken up by the wind.
What’s up?

Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 05:17

Just about my chronic paranoia/phobia about bed bugs - I’m on holiday by myself and terrified that I’m sleeping in a bed with them. I’ve had a few marks but there’s quite a few biting insects here, though the new marks don’t look at all like mosquito ones. I am so scared and have tried calming down with mindfulness things and everything but I just can’t

Take your towel and go on a sun lounger?

HeronLanyon · 09/02/2020 08:02

Hi op. Hope all is ok and/or you are managing to get sleep. Not long to go now.

How’s this for a tragic story? I travel quite a bit and to quite remote places sometimes. I once opened a cupboard and saw what I thought was a bed bug on a bag which is used in recentish trip. Cue massive disruptive whole flat ransacking Few days. Bedding actually chucked. Loads of washings sprayings. Clothes in freezer. Sealed bags everywhere etc etc. I was like a crazed fiend for about a week. Now the more I think about it I think it may have been a small fly and I realise I never did do a proper Id on it (and I’ve seen them and know what they looked like). That ‘thing’ was the very definition of ‘triggering’.
Coming back from anywhere suspect i always leave suitcases in hallway/or garage and have a kind of military cordon in place as things are unpacked and washed etc then suitcase sprayed.
I too am agog at the freezing facility. Never knew they existed !

JiltedJohnsJulie · 09/02/2020 08:53

Hope you’ve managed to get some more sleep.

I once read a piece written by a travel writer. He said he always put his luggage in the bath before checking the room for bedbugs. I do this now. Perhaps something to think about for your next trip Thanks

Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 12:04

Morning everyone. 6am here.

@ HeronLanyon that sounds like a horrible week! I’ve also done the same.

I slept pretty badly, tried to put rain music on my phone as white noise which kind of worked...woke up loads though. At least it’s over! Though it’s super early here and not sure what to do. There isn’t really anywhere to wander and not sure if it’s safe by myself before others are around.

OP posts:
Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 12:04

I mean wander in the town.

Good morning op, well done another night down, we have all been in places of anxiety, unfortunately it is part of being human but what you need to control is how you deal with it now, is there a shopping mall nearby or a sunday market for some retail therapy or
where you might a new book to really take your mind off things

lopdedop · 09/02/2020 13:11

Morning!
Sorry to hear you didn't sleep well.
Is there a reception? Maybe they can recommend somewhere you can walk to for an early breakfast?
Or are you near a beach?

Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 14:22

Morning. 8:20am here now, I’ve had a bit of a walk around and slowly getting ready to go to the pool and just chill out there. Hopefully the day will go quickly, then got one more night to get through...gah most people would kill for a relaxing day here by themselves! I just feel sick with anxiety and want it to be over.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 09/02/2020 14:52

When I'm feeling a bit anxious or down, I find the meditations from Tom Evans really help me.

He does a few, but if you've got WiFi, try this one this morning.

Do they have any activities at the hotel or nearby like a yoga class or aquaribics?

Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 18:34

Thanks I will look those up Smile I’ve been ok during the day really, it’s mainly the anticipation of nighttime which gets to me. Already worrying about tonight. At least it’s my last night.

OP posts:
Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 23:32

Anyone around for the next few hours?
