Alone in foreign country and feeling really low

Sorry for the call for help... but I’m by myself in a foreign country 6 hours ahead, my partner in UK is asleep and I’m struggling quite a lot with low mood/anxiety. No doubt because I’m all by myself and I’m panicking about things. I just want to be at home.

You are absolutely doing great! Well done. Can you download some of those podcasts and listen to them? It sounds like you're a bit too anxious for the one that I've liked best recently (the Whisperer in Darkness). How about signing up for a free trial with Audible and downloading something like a Marion Keyes novel?

Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 01:17

@lopdedop I can’t really explain what it is I’m so scared of. I guess the thought of them crawling all over you is horrible and that image keeps going round and round in my mind constantly. Plus terrified about bringing them back and never getting rid of them. I will be taking all my luggage and clothes to a bed bug specific freezing facility when I get back just in case - which will massively cut down on any risk just in case I’ve inadvertently picked anything up

Also, if you have Netflix, you can download stuff to watch when you're in a good wifi zone, to watch tomorrow night.
Have you enough money to book a late afternoon massage tomorrow, so you are a bit more chilled?
It sounds like you're having some relationship problems, and the anxiety is being heightened by you not knowing what your partner is up to while you're away?
Hope you get some sleep.

Gullible33 · 09/02/2020 01:18

Marion Keyes is fabulous, there is a video of her reading the first chapter of "Grown Ups" on her FB page, it's the first time I have heard her voice and she is every bit as lovely as I imagined.

Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 01:21

Can you use Netflix abroad? Should probably just try that

OP posts:
Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 01:21

@Gullible33 thank you I will google that!

Debating whether to go up and sit in the restaurant and order something. I haven’t eaten anything today so probably should but not sure if I can face it

Nifflernancy, I understand your fear.
Like I say, It happened to me.
If it helps, I'm in what's considered a third world country and all hotels have to be sprayed every 6 months to prevent bedbugs.
Only a serious infestation needs freezing. Two nights won't cause that. And you'll know.. The bites appear quickly.
Hot wash when you get home. And hoover your case.
You'll be good

Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 01:26

Thank you for your advice and for taking the time to message, it’s so kind

Gulible33. Thank you for the Yoga Nidra link. I have been meaning to look for one since I changed phones.

lopdedop · 09/02/2020 01:28

Yes! Eat, and Netflix works pretty much everywhere I think??
You might get different programmes. I got the Affair in central America, couldn't get that in Spain.. Have a look!

Brenna24 · 09/02/2020 01:30

My mind is blown by the fact that there are specific freezing facilities. Why did I never know that before? Mind you I suspect that there aren't any in the East of Scotland as we are apparently so far in the arse end of nowhere as to be not worth looking at.

SinglePringle · 09/02/2020 01:37

I’ve scrolled and RTFT but I can see if you’ve said where you are. Apologies if I’ve missed it.

I’ve travelled a fair bit on my own. Often to countries / destinations you might not expect. Holiday places and Off The Beaten Track places. I feel your anxiety...

Often, what gets me through is ‘I’m not dead! I’ve yet to be murdered!’ Grin

By that, I truly don’t mean to be glib but a genuine, constant reminder to myself that ‘stone me! I appear to be alive and DOING THIS! No-one has thrown me in a ditch, I have a place to sleep, I’ve not been abducted and every second this continues, I get stronger.’ Literally by the second!!!

You got this!

SinglePringle · 09/02/2020 01:38

(And go eat. You can’t scare off the zombies if you’re hungry)

lopdedop · 09/02/2020 01:44

Singlepringle, seems we have the same mantra!
Great advice.
And to pp I think East Scotland climate kills all bugs, as it's cold anyway !! In fact the freezing service, probably just brings stuff up there in a lorry, and it's cured in a day or two!

Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 01:46

You are all making me laugh Smile currently in the lift going up to the restaurant.......

lopdedop · 09/02/2020 01:52

Go Nancy! Please let us know what you're having for dinner.
I am having boiled eggs :(
I reckon you can do better than that!?

Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 01:54

@SinglePringle thank you for your wise words Smile

No I didn’t say where I was - trying to keep semi anonymous in case anyone comes across this! - but it’s hot, a tourist destination and not really off the beaten track! It’s just a quiet ish area so feels isolated to me!

OP posts:
Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 01:55

They seem to have carbonara.... but then asked me if I wanted it with a cream sauce or tomato sauce... so I’m not entirely sure what I’ll be getting!!

OP posts:
Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 01:55

Thought I’d go with something comforting that I know I like (usually - depending on how they make it!)

OP posts:
Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 01:55

To be fair I love eggs, I could go with some yummy eggs on toast or something!

OP posts:
Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 01:59

@lopdedop massage is good idea - could always see if they could do 6pm so into evening time when I’ll be getting more anxious. Though have already spent so much money!

OP posts:
lopdedop · 09/02/2020 02:01

Your carbonara sounds good.
I Just moved to this country a couple of months ago... Seems I forgot the egg cups. 😑

Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 02:06

I don’t actually own egg cups at home, I always forget to buy them when I have boiled eggs I have to function something out of a nibbles bowl and lots of kitchen roll

OP posts:
Nifflernancy · 09/02/2020 02:06

Netflix works! Can’t see whether it is any different though

OP posts:
lopdedop · 09/02/2020 02:19

It was messy , and unsatisfying Nancy.
I did the kitchen roll thing. I have the best egg cups, in storage, they are fun little soldiers!!
Glad you got Netflix. What are you going to binge watch? Have you watched series 2 of You? Enough to put you off relationships forever 😂
