Bore da!
Sut wyt ti heddiw?

Dwi'n dysgu Cymraeg.
I'm very bad, to be fair. Grew up in S.Wales before Welsh was brought back.

A fyddai unrhyw un yn hoffi ymuno â mi?

Don’t worry about mutations though, the main thing is you recognised the word.

Helacnau · 29/01/2020 10:43

Rwy wedi ymuno a mumsnet am y tro cyntaf just I ddarllen a phostio yma. Diolch o'r gallon I bawb syn's cyfrannu! Rwy'n rhugl yn y Cymraeg, one wedi'm addysgu trwy Saesneg (doedd dim ysgolion cyfrwng Cynraeg yma at y pryd (rwy'n hen!). Byw yng Nghymoedd y De. Cafodd fy mhlentyn ei addysgu trwy'r Cymraeg yn yr ysgol, mae'n byw yn Lloegr nawr ac yn colli'r iaith :( Hapus I helpu ynrhuw un sy'n dysgu.

AGnu · 29/01/2020 10:47

Bore da! I grew up in South Wales & did learn some basic Welsh at school Dydw I ddim yn hoffi coffi but I've recently started trying to improve using Duolingo & I'm surprised by how hard I'm finding it. They obviously teach a different version to my school Welsh so it's rather confusing! E.g. Duolingo teaches "AGnu dw i" whereas school taught me to say "AGnu ydw i". Subtle differences but enough to confuse my brain when I've not studied Welsh for nearly 20 years but thought I had a good grasp of the basics!

I'd like to move back to Wales at some point in the future but I'd be taking my English DH & DCs with me. Thought it would be a good idea to brush up on my Welsh so I can help them adjust. I'd love the DC to be bilingual & am investigating Welsh-medium schools. If we moved to France they'd have to adjust so I figure it's no different!

EBearhug · 29/01/2020 10:59

Helo! Saesneg - dw i'n dysgu Cymraeg yn Hampshire.

Don't worry about mutations? They're the most confusing bit of learning Welsh!

picklesdragonisawelshdragon · 29/01/2020 11:11

Hyfryd I weld siwd gymaint o dysgwyr yma xx

MikeAlphaMike · 29/01/2020 11:42

@picklesdragonisawelshdragon
Mutations aren't easy. The mutation depends on the letter that precedes it.

Wales = Cymru
to Wales = i Gymru (vowel that isn't a)
in Wales = yng Nghymru (consonant n)
and Wales = a Chymru. (a)

If you went to Chester (Caer) yesterday, you'd say 'Es i Gaer ddoe.
If you were in Chester yesterday, you would say " Roeddwn yng Nghaer ddoe'. If you said ' Roeddwn yn Gaer ddoe' , the person you were talking to would hear ' I was a fortress yesterday' Smile

a affects p and t too.
Adults and children = Oedolion a phlant
Cup (cwpan) and teapot (tebot) = cwpan a thebot.

picklesdragonisawelshdragon · 29/01/2020 12:01

Gwych! Diolch, Mam!

Helacnau · 29/01/2020 13:09

P'nawn Da. I realised it might more convenient if I'd posted bilingually (and also if I could spell and type) I'm a fluent Welsh speaker, educated in English medium (as I am old and there were no Welsh medium schools in my area then). I live in the South Wales Valleys area. My child was educated Welsh medium, even though his Dad doesn't speak it. He went on to FE in Scotland and England, so didn't hold him back in anyway. Unfortunately having lived in England for a while now he's losing the language. I'm happy to help any learners here. Da bo, hwyl am y tro.
Hela

EBearhug · 29/01/2020 14:36

The thing that is most difficult about mutations is that when you're first learning, it means you don't even know where to look up a word. (I did have a learner's dictionary that would point you at brecwast when you looked up frecwast, though.) I have absorbed them enough that I now know what the original stem word is, but I still make a million mistakes actually using them - whether I should be using a mutation in this place, and if so, which type. OTOH, I sometimes make mistakes in English, especially with speaking, if I change my mind about how to say something half way through and end up rephrasing. So speaking perfectly every single time isn't completely natural even when fluent.

SerenDippitty · 29/01/2020 18:33
