Who else would really appreciate a polite discussion of gender issues and the concerns of women at the jess Philips webchat on Monday?

I posted on the webchat thread:
Since the questions have already been asked I am not allowed to repeat similar but I want on record that self ID, its potential abuse, protection of vulnerable young people from those who promote transition which can sometimes include puberty blockers, the protection of natal women's rights and the importance of teaching biological facts in schools are big concerns to me.

MNHQ have said they don't want any more comments or questions about gender issues on the Web chat thread which I can understand. However what I do want to make clear is the number of people who may share some or all of my concerns. Otherwise any questions about gender issues are of an equal weight to all others and in fact others, which can be repeated in a different form, may seem to gain more weight.

Breath, not breathe!

GrandmaMazur · 20/01/2020 14:21

She really doesn't get it does she? How can a woman who has worked in women's refuges not understand why so many women are worried about self-ID. And that it isn't a small issue to put to one side.

PencilsInSpace · 20/01/2020 14:22

I can't get over how misinformed she is about the GRC process and the spousal exit clause.

She seems to think that the two year's 'living as' the desired gender involves them following you around checking on your clothing choices and what loo you use. In fact you just submit 5 or 6 docs in your new name and gender to cover the two year period.

She seems to think that the spousal exit clause makes it possible for a spouse to stop their partner physically transitioning.

How on earth can she be so misinformed when she has been so heavily involved in the trans equality inquiry and the resulting report?

How dare she be pushing for change to the law when she doesn't understand how it works now?

Well "TWAW" Jess if you're browsing this thread,
Come the fuck on Bab!

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 20/01/2020 14:24

Well that was actually a very useful webchat, thank you MNHQ. I don't think we need any more confirmation of Jess Philip's position and we are all clear where she stands. It's nice to know. Good.

Of course it's depressing as fuck as well as being sadly unsurprising, but I for one am ready, as I am sure we all are, to keep asking these questions and pushing for answers. People can put their fingers in their ears but we can still be there asking and they will have to take their fingers out eventually. I just hope this happens soon and isn't at the expense of many more women and children damaged by the current policies and status quo.

Let's all keep haranguing (or as I like to say, being assertive and focused)

theflushedzebra · 20/01/2020 14:24

Miriel, her reply to you was very disrespectful. It was basically "nobody has ever asked me about this on doorstep, therefore, you don't matter". I've never heard a politician say anything so dismissive as this on any other subject matter.

Topics raised by the electorate deserve to be treated with respect, not dismissed as "oh nobody I know cares about that!"

Saucery · 20/01/2020 14:24

Well, Labour, you just carry on , doing what you’re doing. 🤷‍♀️

They're still deleting posts now the webchat has closed.

Datun · 20/01/2020 14:26

How on earth can she be so misinformed when she has been so heavily involved in the trans equality inquiry and the resulting report?

It was shocking. Talking about how one person shouldn't have the right to affect what the other one does with their body. Utterly ignorant.

The fact that it was all advised by transactivists, porn promotors and the nutters from ATH is really coming home to roost for women.

I wonder if she has any idea that one of the people who gave advice has spent a lifetime advocating for the legalisation of extreme pornography and lowering the age of the participants.

Tinsel

You were very gracious under the circumstances.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 20/01/2020 14:27

Actually I was knocked on by my local Labour canvasser (and this is very much a working class area) who agreed with our position and said lots of people at the "bottom" of the party do, but the top don't, so this is why they need to get elected so they can make their voices heard...I have no confidence whatsoever the top want to even listen let alone take it on board.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 20/01/2020 14:29

"It was shocking. Talking about how one person shouldn't have the right to affect what the other one does with their body. Utterly ignorant. "

And the hateful irony of saying that whilst not seeing a problem with letting men access rape crisis centres/refuges/prisons/ etc etc...

It absolutely is shocking.

Datun · 20/01/2020 14:31

And was the comment about debate is good, but inciting hatred is bad, directed at us or TRAs?

Because she can't possibly, possibly be unaware of the violence women are getting over this issue.

magoria · 20/01/2020 14:32

What Datun says.

DeathByPuppy · 20/01/2020 14:33

Ah. Well that was a total waste of time then.

Speaks to the trans community and ‘lives and learns’.

Speaks to women and ploughs on, seemingly learning fuck all.

All her years of campaigning and working with women fleeing men and she still can’t see the wood for the trees. Unbelievable. Bye Jess.

YourOpinionIsNoted · 20/01/2020 14:41

I spoke to my labour canvassers about it at the last election. Both had no idea about self id and looked very, very uncomfortable at the facts I laid out.

Five years ago I had no idea. Five years ago I would have been voting labour.

theflushedzebra · 20/01/2020 14:42

Bye Jess. Bye Bye Labour.

StealthPolarBear · 20/01/2020 14:43

How disappointing

OP posts:
Michelleoftheresistance · 20/01/2020 14:44

I'm dying to know where these countrywide specialist staff for children with SEND are going to come from?

How are we going to afford those, then? Since they once existed but have mostly been made redundant by LAs, creating a massive brain drain of all that expert knowledge, and LAs can't afford to provide officing and payroll for the people they have now. Schools and families are struggling to buy in private providers who are the only ones left with specialist knowledge enough to support kids that the generic pathways aren't enough for, so who's going to train this magically manifested workforce? What level of qualification will be required, and what additional training will they be given? Where will they be based?

And while we're at the magic manifesting counter, can we quadruple CAHMS please? Bearing in mind that will just about make their caseload manageable and realistic?

wakemewhenitsallover · 20/01/2020 14:45

Thanks for all your contributions and of course to Jess for coming on. We're going to lock this thread now so it's easy for latecomers to see Jess's answers

Yeah, right. MNHQ aren't locking the thread to prevent us pesky women with opinions from talking about Jess's answers are they? Oh NO. Of course not. Hmm

Michelleoftheresistance · 20/01/2020 14:46

Ooh and another thing: how are we going to manage so that after 5 years of manifesting all this into being, reopening the children's centres etc, when the money's all gone and we get a change of govt who slam all this into reverse, sack everybody and cut school budgets and health budgets to the bone to try and keep the country solvent....

we don't just drop children and families and the workforce supporting them straight back in the muck again?

Is some kind of solution needed that removes all this from being a political football?

YourOpinionIsNoted · 20/01/2020 14:49

It's all just yes yes yes. Easy to say, impossible to do.

This is the problem with labour all over. This is why no-one believed their manifesto. This is (a big part of) why they lost the red wall - people would rather vote for the Torys, when they seem to be at least vaguely realistic.

Also, how interesting that the one group she won't say yes to is women.

DeathByPuppy · 20/01/2020 14:54

Total joke from beginning to end. Chasing the woke vote worked SO spectacularly last time, so why on earth would Labour change tack Hmm? Meanwhile, haemorrhaging long-standing supporters like there’s no tomorrow.

I, like lots of other posters, feel politically homeless and it is very sad (and bloody rage inducing) that my party has dropped me so swiftly and aggressively.

Michelleoftheresistance · 20/01/2020 14:55

the one group she won't say yes to is women.

This.

Although for clarity, as JP has confusion around this issue, I'd exchange the word women in that sentence for 'female people'
