I know a Brian who will now be a toddler. I thought the mum was joking until I saw photos of baby Brian's Christening cake.

The old ‘virtue’ names, like Patience, Hope, Faith and Prudence seem to be dead and buried.

Personally, I quite like them, but it’s always struck me as odd that there aren’t any such male names.

It's a bit different in certain African communities where virtue names are quite widespread for both boys and girls.

I really liked Rosemary as well @Dozer. Vetoed by DH when I told him my choice was inspired by the Edison Lighthouse song and I quote "I'm not naming my daughter after a fucking novelty pop record from the 60s" and that, as they say, was that. Should have told him it was a favourite aunt or whatever.

I know a lady in her 80’s called Gay.

I can’t see that making a comeback. Same with names like Dick, I’ve met several older men called Dick (I’m guessing some of them are originally Richards).

Most of the names on this thread though - they’re unfashionable and dated now, yes, but give it a few decades, and I bet many of them will start re-emerging as baby names.

Soen · 15/01/2020 22:58

Hank
Marvin

Another one...Darren! Scott became trendy in 1980s/90s but rarely hear that now.
Jason is no longer popular but for some reason I always loved that name.
Following on from Adolf...I very much doubt Myra will make a comeback.
PP, Edith is a lovely name for your DD

Claire/Clare.

When I was at school every class was full of them but I’ve not met a baby or child named Claire/Clare in about 15 years.

I think most names will be used again somewhere, most generations want to set there own standards. My own name has been mentioned here, I bloody hate it but I know at some point it'll come back.

I know a 3m old Malcolm.

Krazynights34 · 15/01/2020 23:10

Eugene

BinkySodPlop · 15/01/2020 23:11

I think it's more the 70s and 80s names that people turn their noses up to now, so;
Paul
Pauline
Gary
Brian
Tracy
Ian

Mind you, one of my grandmother's many names was Lavinia. Can't imagine too many little girls getting that!

Krazynights34 · 15/01/2020 23:11

And probably my name... Charmaine

TheHagOnTheHill · 15/01/2020 23:11

Winifred and Bernard,my grandparents whose names I could never use.

Drinkciderfromalemon · 15/01/2020 23:13

Some of you do not work where I do... shan't go on, but we have lots of many of the names mentioned, eg, Bruce, Alan, Ruth, Margaret.. certain schools are awash with Viviennes, Arthurs, Percys... combination of eastern European, African or hipster.

thegreylady · 15/01/2020 23:15

Dorothy is lovely. I know several under 5.

Lima45 · 15/01/2020 23:16

I know two baby Elsies, a baby Esme, an Albert nn Bertie, a Violet, an Ava and a small William nn Billy.

When I was at school (mainly 90s) there were lots of Chris's, James's, Craigs, Lisas, Sarahs and Claires. Know no small children with these names now.

PantTwizzler · 15/01/2020 23:16

Ooh I know a Bernard as well. He’s called Bernie. Actually very cute once you get used to it!

I love Edith, was on my list when I had my youngest.

ExohExohGossipgirl · 15/01/2020 23:17

@Krazynights34 I love your name. One of my closest friends is named the same and that is why :)

Has anyone under 35 been named Gillian?

ViveLEntenteCordiale · 15/01/2020 23:20

Kevin and Ian

I thought Kevin had died out with my generation (born late 60s) but a friend has a 20-something Kevin!

I know a teenaged Robert but we are in France and it's a name that works in both languages so doesn't seem too odd...
