My DD 's middle name has been mentioned a few times. Personally I think it's due a comeback Grin.

I really wanted it as her first name but DH was for none of it. Come to think of it,his name has popped up a few times as well. Grin

Out of the OP list I can see Vera and Percy making a comeback. I’ve seen Vera crop up on Instagram a few times (although I think they’ve all been from people outside the UK) and Percy fits in with the vintage name resurgence and would be ideal for someone who wants something a bit more unusual than Archie, Alfie. Freddie etc.

I can’t see Mildred, Gertrude or Virgil making a come back.

SunshineDays2019 · 18/01/2020 11:22

Ah all the best happy hen, if you have your Percy, I'm sure he will be gorgeous. Smile

Eh, one of mines middle name is Frank!

I was thinking of ex boyfriends I have had when I was young and desirable and realise they all had 'meh' names too.

Emmet
Gareth
Paul
John
Christoper
Robert

Lots of these names are already back. Those that think they’ll never come back are out of touch. Some may not be currently “fashionable” in the mass market, but that because the mass market is always behind the times by 20 years.

SunshineDays2019 · 18/01/2020 11:54

Lol gossip girl on a similar note, the boys I fancied (we never used the term "fit" back then!) at school when a teen in the 80s:
Matthew
Pete
Rob
Mark
Grin

To those saying Daphne - I had a baby Daphne on Sunday!

ExohExohGossipgirl · 18/01/2020 11:58

Daphne reminds me of Neighbours :)

Hmm lads I fancied... there was a Jason, Gary, Barry..... Im just going to stop now actually before I get to my XH's name which I mentioned upthread. I still believe his mother should have been done for child abuse what with his name and his brothers - Darryl and Geoffrey!

ManonBlackbeak · 18/01/2020 11:59

The Doris I met was in very affluent rural area (think huge thatched cottages, big old country halls, farms with masses of land etc)where a lot of the children go on to private schools after finishing,

My DGD is Norah. It suits her.

ddl1 · 18/01/2020 12:04

Frank is not uncommon among small boys, though rare among the 20-somethings.

Chris for Christopher is not as common as 20 years ago, but still far from unknown. Christine is uncommon among younger people, however.

A lot of names do come back. When I was a child, Emma and Sophie were the sort of names that your great-aunts might have, and then became very popular. Later, names like Grace, Florence, Lily, Ruby, Amelia, Arthur, Alfie and Hugo started coming back into fashion. I've even met the occasional Mabel, Maud and Wilfred among young children- am expecting these to revive further. I wouldn't be surprised if Colin and Gareth had a revival soon, due to Colin Firth and Gareth Southgate respectively.

SunshineDays2019 · 18/01/2020 12:07

Oh yes Daryl is particularly... Hmm
Anyone got a young Dwane? Shock

To be ahead of the trend you need to pick a name that you think will never come back.

poseysbobblehat · 18/01/2020 12:18

Jake is definitely current, I have one !

BayHorse · 18/01/2020 12:22

Thank you very much Sunshine Thanks

So many have a downer on Brian (Bryan) but not Ryan! Curious

user1493391099 · 18/01/2020 13:26

Effie

Starwind74 · 18/01/2020 14:03

I think it’s impossible to say really, names that were once old hat have now been revived. In fact names that were popular say 15 years ago I don’t think you hear of so much. Seems to be mainly old fashioned names revived which is lovely Especially if family names or previously unheard of modern names. All part of life’s rich tapestry.

ddl1 · 18/01/2020 14:18

'So many have a downer on Brian (Bryan) but not Ryan! Curious'

I think it's not a 'downer' but just that these are of different generations. Ryan was IIRC particularly popular among children born in the 90s, and is still not an uncommon name. Brian was more a name for children born in the 70s or earlier, and is quite uncommon now.

Devora13 · 18/01/2020 15:07

I know two Arthur's of five or under.
Rosemary? Well we have Rose or Rosie.
Lilian-Lily.

My poor mother was Gladys. Now I really would feel sorry for a child...
I used to beg her to use her middle name.
