I 've come across quite a few boys called Michael. John and Robert are not ubiquitous like many years ago, but not at all unknown. Not many Claires around, but a few Claras. Admittedly this was in the 90s, but I did meet a small girl called Dorcas, which is probably the most old-fashioned one I've seen personally. I haven't come across a child called Doreen or Doris but have met a couple of Doras.

Dennis and Beryl are very rare now, perhaps because of the associations with Dennis the Menace and Beryl the Peril.

My name isn't on here. Never does appear on threads as it's unusual. However, pretty much my whole family are named here, Including Nora, aged 5. Grin

I did have great-aunts called Dora and Hilda. Dora may be more likely to be used than Hilda. Also had a great aunt Evelyn, who seems to have died young.

I like almost all the names above. It’s all cyclical. And national. Do remember a friend visiting France and a woman saying how much they love the name Kevin there. With the accent obvs. Here it was considered well naff.

Granny was a Fanny”. (Etc from the Irn Bru advert.
Don’t know if that got shown in England but I near pissed my pants when I saw it Grin

I’ve just had a Mabel Rosemary on New Years Eve. I love old fashioned names. I wanted Mavis but DP vetoed that one. They weren’t in the top 100 names of 2018, hoping they didn’t make 2019 either.

It’s names like carol, Keith, Gary, Paul, Bernadette that I think wont come back at all

TEMK · 17/01/2020 21:14

A work colleague’s relation had a baby recently. I asked after the baby’s name.....Bernard!!!!!!

mastertomsmum · 17/01/2020 21:15

Our Vicar’s dog is called Percy - Percy the Labradoodle. I rather like the name and did think it was not quite right for a dog. Curly would suit him better 😀

Agree it's all cyclical. Was reading something (typically can't think what it was now) from c. 120 years ago and so many of the names are back in fashion now!

NotBeforeCoffee · 17/01/2020 21:31

@Madein1995 every other male baby is called Arthur now.

Most people in this thread are not realising that granny chic is in big time with names currently

Aglet · 17/01/2020 21:39

In my youth I dated a Horace and a Gilbert, at the same time!

RainbowAlicorn · 17/01/2020 21:39

I was going to call my DD Mary Ann 🙈
Is it wrong that I actually like a lot of these names? It's a lot of the unusual names I don't like.

Flamingle18 · 17/01/2020 21:52

@CreekIsRising I know a 10yo chardonnay and a 14yo tegan!

So many of these names are back in vogue eg Daphne, Mary, Vera, etc. To me ,Linda, Terry, Sandra , Keith and Doreen seem 'beyond the pale' but the same could have been said of Nora, Ada and Maud a few years ago so Tracy and Sharon will be right back when my DC have children.

ddl1 · 17/01/2020 22:15

Although I haven't met a Millicent or Mildred who was under retirement age, Millie is not that uncommon among the small girls I know. It's not uncommon for children to be given names that used to be short for something as their full names: e.g. Beth seems commoner than Elizabeth; Alfie than Alfred; Freddie than Frederick.

I think there'll be no Borises, Jeremys or Nigels for a while, because of their controversial associations (if you have any of these names, 50% of people will be against you just on hearing them!) And Donald - bad enough that for a long time it's been associated with a Disney duck; now it's associated with a terrible president!
