Just read this on their instagram page.
They plan on becoming private citizens

Shock not been discussed with other members of the family. HM must be spitting bricks. I still wish them the best & hope they will be happy. Wonder if this is the cause of the alleged rift between the brothers?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/01/2020 21:00

You don't walk away from their income level without something to back it up

Very true - but then 6 weeks across the Atlantic was probably spent fishing for offers. If they're not on an Oprah show by this time next year I'll be very surprised

diddl · 08/01/2020 21:01

Well yes, it does seem that they are hoping for the best of both worlds.

Discussions about their potential role were at an early stage according to the Palace (BBC news again) so they knew that Harry and Meghan wanted to step back, but didn't know they were going to announce it today is my take on that.

HairyToity · 08/01/2020 21:02

I think it is a very brave move. I admire their bravery.

mrscampbellblackagain · 08/01/2020 21:02

I thought the Oprah show was already a done deal?

StartupRepair · 08/01/2020 21:04

I think the Speakers circuit beckons for Meghan. $100,000 for 30 mins on "my 18 months as a British Royal". Plus expenses.

diddl · 08/01/2020 21:06

It's not that brave though if you've already got millions & can trade on your title&connections!

So no one was consulted at BP?
Me thinks the sh1t is going to hit the fan. Self-centred pair.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 08/01/2020 21:10

However many millions they may have, it won't last long with security bills of £2m/year will it? And i hope the titles are removed along with public money, then they can do just what they like!

lyralalala · 08/01/2020 21:10

If the discussions with the Queen are at an early stage then they've no way of knowing what she'll allow and not

They could have said "We're walking away" and no-one could stop them (she could have caused them problems with Archie, but she's never going to do that when he's low in the line of succession), but they can't decide about titles, being part-time royals and the likes

That's not any different to anyone else going into work and announcing to their boss they are going part-time and they'll let the company know the hours they are going to work

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 08/01/2020 21:11

Well it was obviously going to happen. I think it's the right decision.

GlitchStitch · 08/01/2020 21:12

Presumably they aren't planning to hop on a plane tonight so why the rush to announce? Surely it would have been better to work out the particulars with the RF first and then it could have been announced in due course with more details given so less speculation. For a couple who apparently dislike press intrusion they don't half seem to like generating headlines.

Encyclo · 08/01/2020 21:12

The British Media/Public: we are shocked that our relentless vilification of Meghan has caused them to step back from royal duties..

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 08/01/2020 21:13

The statement says nothing really about their future plans. Meghan has an impressive work ethic and a sharp focus on what she wants so I think accusations about them being lazy are unfair. Whether the path she has planned for them takes them out of the royal circle completely remains to be seen. I don't think she will willingly give up the Brand.

diddl · 08/01/2020 21:19

"However many millions they may have, it won't last long with security bills of £2m/year will it?"

Perhaps PC will pay it?

Well, doubtless they are planning to earn as much as they can-hence the stepping back, but they've certainly got quite a buffer whilst getting established!

hopeishere · 08/01/2020 21:19

An impressive work ethic? Because she has actually once had a job?!

KatyCarrCan · 08/01/2020 21:23

I find it highly amusing that people think their decision to step down as senior royals is prompted by press intrusion. The bottom of their statement was a checklist of points on how they're going to work with the press on their charity and campaigning work.

They're not walking away from the media. They're actively courting it. They're trying to walk away from the scrutiny of spending from the public purse.

They will be all over the media both here and in the US and Canada. They're brand building.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 08/01/2020 21:27

An impressive work ethic? Because she has actually once had a job?!

I was thinking about her lifestyle blog which, if you like that sort of thing, was carefully researched and put together, the way she threw herself into royal duties from the off, the whole hitting the ground running approach.

Personally I'm not a fan but I have to give credit where credit's due, and I think she is a grafter.

Strawberrycreamsundae · 08/01/2020 21:33

It sounds suspiciously like they're intending to cherry pick the bits they quite fancy doing and dump the rest.
The more I hear about them the more distasteful they sound.

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 08/01/2020 21:33

My friend lives steps away from Frogmore Cottage. They've never spent a night there as far as the locals are aware. I don't think they were ever going to live there and I believe this was the plan all along and frankly I don't judge or blame them. Why on earth would anyone hang around to put up with the huge levels of abuse and criticism they've received? I agree she doesn't understand the depths of tradition and all the royal family stands for and that's a good thing for their marriage. She's not tied down to it and she's shown him an alternative. The only way this is problematic is if she's issued ultimatums.

I'm reading elsewhere that the palace had no idea this was going to happen and talks were only in the early stages. M has certainly shaken things up!

Stronger2020 · 08/01/2020 21:34

Wow, so reading the fuller statement on the Sussex website, they only want to give up 5% of their income! Gets worse and worse.

hopeishere · 08/01/2020 21:35

I agree when she was on Royal duties she was engaged, interested and enthusiastic. And looked happy.

I never saw the blog so can't comment.

Zofloramummy · 08/01/2020 21:38

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a person in the public eye be so vilified and criticised. Ahe maybe a power crazed mad woman or a really nice person, but nobody deserves the malice she has faced. All because she wasn’t a blue blood, came from a poor background, wasn’t white and dared to marry the nations darling, the boy who walked behind the coffin.

Good luck to them, hopefully they’ll be happy in America on the celeb circuit and able to have some sort of ‘normal’ life.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 08/01/2020 21:44

Even on this thread there have been people repeating the myth about Harry’s parentage.

I could see how someone would get fed up of the constant sniping.
