Just read this on their instagram page.
They plan on becoming private citizens

OP posts:
dadap · 08/01/2020 20:38

The statement reads "They will work to become^ financially independent" NOT working towards becoming financially^ independent

bohemia14 · 08/01/2020 20:39

If this announcement hasn't been discussed with the Queen then it's incredibly poor form. It seems they think they are bigger than the Royal family. I hope that's not the case.

I've never really understood all the negative comments about Meghan. But now I'm not so sure. It's all happened so fast.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 08/01/2020 20:39

Announcing it without giving the rest of them a heads up is really poor form

I'm only hoping this isn't true, though the reported BP statement's terse in the extreme

If Harry believes even this is something he could do off his own bat, he may find he's just painted himself into a difficult corner

KenzoBaby

Thanks Canada, we owe you one!
Poor Harry will be stuck there after the divorce though as the kid(s) will live there

🤣🤣🤣

everyrosehasathorn · 08/01/2020 20:39

@Bibidy compared to you & I and the majority of people on this planet yes they are loaded. My opinion however is that is not enough for them they want more. To be a part of the Oprah crowd and set up their own Gates or Clinton Foundation.

They have their sights set on a much bigger prize. Harry will always be Diana's son, brother and son of the future Kings. By stepping back they can do what they want without the rules & regulations that hinder them but the royal connection will always open doors regardless of whether they are part of the royal family or not.

SirVixofVixHall · 08/01/2020 20:40

That could be understood either way really, I think it is more likely to mean working towards, otherwise it should say “work, in order to be financially independent “ . Needs to be clarified.
I feel they should be either in or out. This cake and eating it is not good.

hopeishere · 08/01/2020 20:41

They're only just back from holiday. How would they have had time to have a proper discussion with anyone about this.

Bet the RF WhatsApp is on 🔥!!!

I’m just worried about what this will mean for the amount of content for the Royal Style & Beauty thread

annielouise · 08/01/2020 20:43

It'll be interesting to find out if the queen and PC knew of this before it was announced.

Regardless I think the queen needs to at least remove the HRH title. I don't think after Andrew/Fergie etc it will sit well with the public for them to trade off titles and make a vast fortune, even if they are running a charitable foundation.

However, as I said on the PA thread, I don't think the queen is that sharp. I don't think she's in touch at all and she only took action with andrew when it was unavoidable due to the public outcry. She should have nipped that behaviour in the bud years ago (all the backhanded deals etc) but she did. I think she didn't as she doesn't particularly care what the public think unless it looks like it's going to topple the gravy train. She's of a generation where she probably thinks she is there by God's divine intervention or right or whatever it is and she thinks she's above it all. Charles has also been brought up like that but I think has realised he won't get away with it with the public today - i.e. that they are they because of the goodwill and grace of the people now - more than ever.

lyralalala · 08/01/2020 20:43

If the "work to become financially independent" means "We're going to do paid work and accept no money" then I'd bet they already have offers/plans in place

You don't walk away from their income level without something to back it up

Lunde · 08/01/2020 20:44

I see them going the same way as Sweden's Princess Madeleine and husband Chris O'Neill and family They downsized their roles a few years ago and moved to a gated community in Florida, Chris never wanted to be a working royal as he kept getting photographed drunk and on the famous occasion visibly hungover at a Royal event Madeleine continues to do a lot of charity work for her mother, Queen Silvia's, childhood foundation. She does a lot of appearances at galas and dinner on the celebrity circuit.

One thing that the Swedish Royal Household does very well - that Britain might do well to adopt - is the notion of Prince/princess school. Everyone who marries into the Swedish Royal family to be a working Royal must attend Royal school for 6-18 months. It is a mixture of studies and mentoring that covers things like

  • workings and organisation of the Royal Household
  • Swedish History - military ceremonial and cultural roles
  • etiquette and diplomacy
  • foreign languages
  • University studies in political science, government and politics, role of parliament and government, Public Administration at state and local level,
Prince Daniel's Prince school took 18 months - Princess Sofia's took 6-8 months. Chris O'Neill refused and has never been a working royal

I think that it would have been a good idea for Meghan and Kate to have this type of introduction programme to help them know that they were getting into and give some contemplation to what type of role they wanted to play

Dozer · 08/01/2020 20:45

The taxpayers’ money should stop.

ChicCroissant · 08/01/2020 20:45

The BBC understands no other royal was consulted before the statement.

While the decision to step back was probably discussed, I do think it's awful to put out a statement without giving the rest of the family - who are affected by it - a heads up. Another chance to come out of a situation looking good thrown away by Harry and Meghan.

cloud1183 · 08/01/2020 20:45

A half in- half out arrangement won’t work- especially as they mentioned about their finances in their statement. Their spending will be intensely scrutinised now and he may be worth £30 million but it will soon dwindle away. They are best just cutting ties completely and becoming celebrities

greeentopmilk · 08/01/2020 20:45

Much of the press and general public have been unforgivably unwelcoming, nasty and unkind towards Meghan from the beginning.

They only have one life, i don't blame them for taking a step back so they can enjoy being parents and having a more free lifestyle.

It's not like Harry is due to be King so it doesn't really affect anything.

BaggaChips · 08/01/2020 20:49

It's their decision to step back BUT I would not expect them to receive taxpayers money to support them if they are not carrying out royal duties

They will have to cut their cloth accordingly!

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 08/01/2020 20:51

So it’s not a forgone conclusion that it will go the way they expect - if the Palace is only now discussing this with them then I reckon they might be asked to give up the titles.

bohemia14 · 08/01/2020 20:51

I've only just read their statement in full. 'As we continue to collaborate with her Majesty the Queen'. Disgraceful wording. That's a term you use about another business institution, not your grandmother without whom Harry wouldn't have the life of privilege he enjoys.

Hugely disrespectful to his grandmother and father. Utterly despicable.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 08/01/2020 20:53

The BBC understands no other royal was consulted before the statement.

If true it says it all really. All about them.

JacquesHammer · 08/01/2020 20:54

The level of self-righteous indignation at mere supposition is worth the tax payers’ money alone Grin

Findumdum1 · 08/01/2020 20:57

Why do they have to "work towards" being fincially independent? She is a millionaire actress who was independently wealthy before she met him and he, whilst no longer having a job, must have had a significant inheritance/trust from Diana? If they are stepping down from Royal Duties (fine) - all public money should stop after their next scheduled cheque - same as it would for normal people who resign from a job.

PortiaCastis · 08/01/2020 20:57

The bbc understands a lot of things but then they make up a lot of things if nobody tells them what's going on, bit like on here really

TheYearOfTheDog · 08/01/2020 20:58

Cant believe they didnt run the statement past the firm.

But that is their entire position now. They dint want to run anything past anybody now.

GlitchStitch · 08/01/2020 20:59

So they've just decided that they can take a half in half out approach, and haven't even discussed it with the Queen or Charles before sharing it with Instagram? How disrespectful to the Queen, I hope she tells them to buzz off and become completely private citizens.
