Are Jo Malone diffusers and candle as great as everyone says?

I have some Christmas money and would like to buy a nice candle or diffuser that I can actually smell around the house!

Over the years I’ve had so many different brand diffusers and candle but have never been able to justify spending the amount that the Jo Malone ones cost! Shock

I like a nice strong scent that I can notice as soon as I walk into the room.

If you've had a Jo Malone before how do you rate them? Or what would you recommend instead? Thanks

I used to get a candle for Christmas each year as a gift from a family member, it was always Pomegranate Noir and I have to say I really liked them and the scent is lovely.

But I'm thinking of a change next time!

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 06/01/2020 13:18

I used to love Jo Malone, Blackberry & Bay Being my fave and someone bought me an Aldi dupe and I was a complete knob and turned my nose up at it but it’s absolutely identical and fills the room with scent far better then JM ever did. So no, I don’t think they’re as good as I though they were

Esteban candles are amazing, absolutely worth the money

Not very luxurious but George Home reed diffusers and candles are amazing.
I had a large JM candle I was gifted and tbh I wasn't impressed.

Truthfully, Nope.

I do like candles and while I can afford Jo Malone if I want (Not a stealth boast but for context) but I prefer to get the Aldi dupes and to spend my money on gin and massages Blush

Sushiroller · 06/01/2020 13:23

Should have said the reason i prefer the Aldi dupes is I think they are better!!!

Honeyroar · 06/01/2020 13:23

They’re ok, but not that special and you’re paying double what they’re worth for the name. There are lots of other small candle makers that are as nice and much cheaper. (Look up Lilac and Thyme).

Southmouth · 06/01/2020 13:37

I think a trip to Aldi is needed!

I don’t want to spend that amount on a single one from Jo Malone and be disappointed, rather be able to by a few good cheaper ones and have them spread around the house if that’s the case!

I was given one, fell off my chair when I found out how much they cost. I think you can kid yourself on that they are worth it when you know the price, but really, they're just candles aren't they?

Patsypie · 06/01/2020 14:04

I'm sick of being disappointed by candles. I don't like the Aldi ones but really rate a brand called Geodesics. About £25 but they last ages and the throw is great. I love clove tree.

ChocChipWookie · 06/01/2020 15:27

DIL loves candles and someone bought her and DS a Jo Malone for a housewarming gift. I joked I wanted an invite when she lit it.
Anyway, when visiting the other week she had to tell me it was lit as I couldn't actually smell it, and when stood over it sniffing I was unimpressed.

I'm intrigued by those on Dragons Den over Christmas with the jewellery in the wax. Might have to get her one of those for her birthday so I can have a look Grin

myusernamewastakenbyme · 06/01/2020 16:06

Its a candle... a £2 airwick one is going to do exactly the same thing as a JM one....I just dont get why people spend that kind of cash on a candle.

neversleepagain · 06/01/2020 16:15

I love JM candles, strong scents like Sweet Almond & Macaroon, Wood Sage and Sea Salt are lovely and strong scented.
I prefer Diptyque Candles and adore the Oud scented candle.

You get what you pay for, cheaper candles have cheap ingredients that aren't always good to have wafting around your home. Natural ingredients are something I would choose and prefer.

greenlavender · 06/01/2020 17:15

I love Diptyque candles, I find they are better for the price if you want a strong scent.

PeytonManning · 06/01/2020 17:19

I love JM Wood sage and sea salt and English Oak and Redcurrant is divine. That said, I have to light 3 of them to actually smell them! So, no. They’re not worth the price but still nice to have.

DameXanaduBramble · 06/01/2020 17:22

I treated myself to a big multiwick £350 jm candle. Wish I hadn’t bothered. Not remotely worth the money.

madeyemoodysmum · 06/01/2020 17:23

£350!!!!! Surely that's a typo

Chickoletta · 06/01/2020 17:24

DD bought my mum a candle from M&S for Christmas and it is really lovely - the frangrance is something like winter spice or nutmeg and something. Very strong when lit but you can also smell it when not. I usually buy the White Company ones but may switch to M&S in future for a third of the price.

DameXanaduBramble · 06/01/2020 17:25

Nope! The largest one is that much.

dingledanglescarecrows · 06/01/2020 17:26

Not IMO. I like the ones from white company, Seychelles I think is my favourite.

DameXanaduBramble · 06/01/2020 17:27

Sorry, it was 300. Not 350, as if that matters ! I wont be buying another

Owlish · 06/01/2020 17:27

I got a couple of the Aldi dupes and found them to be very disappointing, hardly any scent; though to be honest, they weren't that nice anyway, so that was a good thing! No idea what the original JM ones are like, they're out of my budget.

DameXanaduBramble · 06/01/2020 17:29

Not impressed by the Aldi ones either, they dont smell of anything.

itwaseverthus · 06/01/2020 17:29

My dm took the Jo Malone diffuser oil/sticks back it was so weak! The only way I could smell anything was holding the bottle upto my nose and even then, it was weak. £70 it cost!

Diptyque candles and room sprays are fabulous. I like to spray some on a cold air electric diffuser, fills the whole room and lasts ages.

ec1993 · 06/01/2020 17:30

The best thing I ever did was buy a candle lantern!

You place the candle underneath and the heat from the bulb melts them instead of fire, safer and the candles last forever because they're not actually burning away, just melting if that makes sense then they go hard again when off the heat.

I am a massive candle fan, I have spent lots of time in America due to family being there and I'm well known for my Bath & Body Works candle collection Blush

Personally Jo Malone doesn't do it for me, very expensive and not very strong smelling.

If you can get hold of any Bath & Body works ones, do it! Lots of for sale pages etc do them as they are very popular and can't be bought anywhere other than America and Dubai.

Next Diffusers are my favourites when it comes to diffusers. Not cheap at £20-35 but last a long time and the one in my living room also fills my hallway with the smell x

TheCoolerQueen · 06/01/2020 17:33

I wouldn't usually pay full price for JM for myself but I have bought them for gifts. Once or twice a year they have a game where you get a free gift so that's when I've purchased them, works out as BOGOF.
