I would say the first one I remember was Damilola Taylor briefly , I was about 7 and remember seeing it on the news.

the first one i remember seeing on the news was sarah payne. i think i would have been around 9. my mum has always been a worrier and for a while she wouldn’t let me and my siblings play on the field opposite our house where we’d played for years. some of the other neighbourhood mums were the same.

prampushingdownthehighst · 29/12/2019 19:04

I remember seeing Janette Tate on the front page of our regional newspaper.

NoncePieforSanta · 29/12/2019 19:04

Carl Bridgwater's murder, probably - at least, that was the first murder case I really remember hearing about, though of course there'd been bombings and bank robberies etc

NoncePieforSanta · 29/12/2019 19:06

Or Genette Tate, as PP said - I remember being very frightened by the idea that it was possible for a person to just "disappear"

Kelsoooo · 29/12/2019 19:08

I'm not sure.i remember 3 crimes, incredibly well. However, without googling I can't be sure of the time lines, I just know I was young.

The Columbine Massacre (back in the days these were still genuinely shocking)
The Bulger Killing (one I actually talk about a lot with our au pairs)
Sarah Payne/ Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells (my brain merges these for some reason, despite knowing they're not the same obviously)

Kelsoooo · 29/12/2019 19:09

The Columbine Massacre, I actually remember sitting at the dining table in the kitchen and reading about it in the newspaper when I was off school poorly.

DullPortraits · 29/12/2019 19:10

Probably james bulger 🥺

crosser62 · 29/12/2019 19:11

The Yorkshire ripper.
He had killed near to where we lived, women genuinely did not go out at night for fear. I was a small child but felt very frightened by it.

BarkandCheese · 29/12/2019 19:11

The murder of Lord Mountbatten by the IRA. I was seven, it was such a huge news story but what I mostly remember is seeing the state funeral on TV.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/12/2019 19:12

Canary Wharf bombing and then the soho bombing

RitaMills · 29/12/2019 19:13

James Bulger for me too, I was 8 and remember it so vividly.

Davros · 29/12/2019 19:13

Lesley Whittle

SwingoutSisterSledge · 29/12/2019 19:13

Susan Maxwell

Dhalandchips · 29/12/2019 19:14

Same as @crosser62 Yorkshire Ripper. I'm from round that way too. Very scary times, I was a young teen.

Alexandrite · 29/12/2019 19:16

The kidnapping and murder of Lesley Whittle when i was 4. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kidnapping_and_murder_of_Lesley_Whittle
I remember seeing on TV that she was missing. I didn't know anything else about it at the time, but looked it up as an adult. Horrific story

vinoandbrie · 29/12/2019 19:17

James Bulger, as a very little girl.

RandomMess · 29/12/2019 19:18

Susan Maxwell disappearing.

Shergar is probably the oldest crime story I remember

Cocolapew · 29/12/2019 19:21

Genette Tate in 1978, I was 10 and lived in Devon at the time so it was on the local news.

giggly · 29/12/2019 19:22

Caroline Hogg I was about 10 and remember the missing posters up in the bus station in Glasgow. I cried when Robert Black was charged with her abduction and murder. Just awful for her family to have to wait for so long before a chance for closure. The same I expect for Madeleine McCann’s family💔💔

meow1989 · 29/12/2019 19:24

I think Holly and Jessica or Millie Dowler. I dont know how old I was but I remeber thinking "oh, well obviously they'll find them safe". Oh the naievity of youth Sad

prampushingdownthehighst · 29/12/2019 19:26

Oh gosh yes Genette, sorry for incorrect spelling.
It was on Spotlight wasn't it?
It was the photo on The Western Morning News that I remember, terrified me ,that picture of her bicycle ground tooSad

SuperficialSuzie · 29/12/2019 19:26

Like a PP I grew up in Leeds when the Yorkshire Ripper was killing.

Women didn't go out at night unless they absolutely had to.

Mum had to give up shift work as she didn't drive and did not want to be walking home after doing back shift at 10.30 at night.

MrsWhites · 29/12/2019 19:31

James Bulger unfortunately, I vividly remember watching divers search for him.

I can also remember Jill Dando’s murder, I would have been a pre-teen around then and I got a news notification on my pager (remember them!!)
