I would say the first one I remember was Damilola Taylor briefly , I was about 7 and remember seeing it on the news.

OP posts:
Queenparsnip · 29/12/2019 21:40

Locherbie but very vaguely
James Bulger
The Cromwell street murders

Bairnsmum05 · 29/12/2019 21:47

Vicky Hamilton from Bathgate I think. Got the bus at falkirk bus station and went missing. I also remember seeing a lot of posters for Caroline hogg and Susan maxwell in motorway service stations so they all stick in my mind.

BethanyGilbert · 29/12/2019 22:29

Louise Woodward Case. I remember seeing it every day on GMTV. We used to talk about it at school but we were only six at the time so I doubt we understood what was going on but I did always worry I would shake a baby to death while playing with it.

Patsypie · 29/12/2019 22:30

Susan Maxwell & the Yorkshire Ripper

Littleroundsponge · 29/12/2019 22:31

James Bulger Sad I was 6 and remember going to lay flowers for him with my Mum. So heartbreaking Sad

StrongerThanIThought76 · 29/12/2019 22:33

Sarah Harper - I was her age and had been in the shop she had gone to on the same day. Chilling.

TheMadGardener · 29/12/2019 22:34

Genette Tate. I was at primary school in Cornwall and it was a very big story in the South West. Every few months now I drive past a turning to her village, and whenever I see the signpost I think of her.

doyoueverfeellikea · 29/12/2019 22:35

Leah Betts and dunblane.

FairytaleofBykerGrove · 29/12/2019 22:35

Caroline Hogg. I was five years old and saw her picture in the newspaper.

Marmablade · 29/12/2019 22:44

Tracey Turner murder. I was very young and couldn't understand why someone would be a prostitute at a trucking stop. I was very naive obviously.

ifancyagreencard · 29/12/2019 22:46

Susan Maxwell.

We were on holiday in Cornwall. I'll never forget my burly Dad and uncle sat in deck chairs on the beach with tears steaming down their faces, as they read in the paper about her poor parents putting her teddy bear in her coffin Sad

Stranger danger became real......

Troels · 29/12/2019 22:48

For me it was Christine Derby killed and found at Cannock Chase. We went on holiday there shortly after.
Mum was a bit Hmm about going she had a gaggle of little girls with her and none of us listened much and ran about all over playing hide and seek in the tall ferns in the woods.

northernstars · 29/12/2019 22:49

Suzy Lamplugh

BeyondFlubeInclusionaryRF · 29/12/2019 22:49

Dunblane, I specifically remember where I was sat in my junior school (I was yr5) classroom when we were talking about what we would have done. I'm fairly sure I even remember who was sat next to me.

SirVixofVixHall · 29/12/2019 22:53

Aberfan. My mother crying. I was two, but I remember it.

SexlessBoulderBelly · 29/12/2019 22:53

Madeline McCann. I remember being sat at my grans watching the news after it had happened. I would have been 11.

I vaguely also remember 9/11 but I was at school at the time and can temper my mum being late to pick us up because she was watching the news fixated

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 29/12/2019 22:56

Fred West and James Bulger

TokyoSushi · 29/12/2019 22:57

Lockerbie & Suzy Lamplugh for me.

I was also alive and remember James Bulger but didn't know very much about it at the time. I've always avoided reading anything at all about it as I understand that it's absolutely unbearable and so very sad.

iknowimcoming · 29/12/2019 23:02

The disappearance of Mark Tildersley at a funfair in the next big town to where I lived as a child, I wondered about it frequently over the years and googled it a few years back as it occurred to me there might have been an update, there was, it was unbelievably horrific and definitely worse than I even imagined, suffice to say he was murdered, so so sad Sad

ToEarlyForDecorations · 29/12/2019 23:02

Carl Bridgewater. Similar age to me. If I ever see a school photo of him now on the t.v., it touches me that he didn't get to grow up or grow old.

Suzy Lamplugh. Again, similar age and circumstances to me. I can look back at old photos of me from then and laugh. Those photos of her are among the last one ever taken.

Nicknacky · 29/12/2019 23:04

Susan maxwell and Caroline Hogg for me. My dad was a police man and he used to take me into the police office when he was exercising and I would see their missing posters and that stayed with me. And then, a few short years later Vicky Hamilton’s picture joined them.

TurningLeaves · 29/12/2019 23:14

Suzy Lamplugh. She was an estate agent who went missing in 1986 after an appointment to show a house to a man who called himself Mr Kipper.

AravisQueenOfArchenland · 29/12/2019 23:16

Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman, who were the same age as me.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 29/12/2019 23:21

Gosh, it is hard to concieve that Holly and Jessica would be women now, perhaps mothers Sad

StarbucksSmarterSister · 29/12/2019 23:23

Christine Derby killed and found at Cannock Chase.

Me too. It was all over the local papers, I could see the Chase in the distance from my bedroom window.
