I would say the first one I remember was Damilola Taylor briefly , I was about 7 and remember seeing it on the news.

OP posts:

Genette Tate. I was about 8 at the time and my 15yo older sister kept teasing me about it saying that I would be the next to disappear. Until my Nan heard her one day and verbally ripped her a new one for upsetting me on purpose...

She didn't realise that Nan was in the room. I did. Grin

Marie Wilks on the M50

Was at university in Liverpool when James bulger was killed

RandomMess · 29/12/2019 19:32

I wasn't far from Yorkshire and I do remember the murders but Susan Maxwells disappearance hit very hard as she was my age and we visited Coldstream so I knew that bridge. Murder/abduction was something that happened to children too.

So sad all those murdered Sad

IRA bombings just seemed everyday news... 😢

Spied · 29/12/2019 19:32

Fred&Rose West.
I remember my grandparents reading The News of the World and discussing it.
I also remember sitting watching the 6o'clock news about it.

AlexaAmbidextra · 29/12/2019 19:35

A little girl called Kim Roberts who disappeared from a few streets away from where I lived as a child. Her body was found some time later in a remote part of Essex. Her killer wasn’t found at the time but decades later a man apparently confessed on his death bed. I remember the police coming to our house doing door to door enquiries. This was in 1964.

f00k · 29/12/2019 19:37

The Soham murders. I was 14 at the time. I remember the news being on at home most days and we watched it a lot during those two weeks before their bodies were found.

Bigbopboo · 29/12/2019 19:38

Suzy Lamplugh

Chestnut23 · 29/12/2019 19:48

Not sure what the earliest one was but I do wonder about Claudia Lawrence still.

bruffin · 29/12/2019 19:53

The IRA starring and feathering girls when I was 8 or 9 in 1971,
Maria Cowell was murdered by step father , a failure by SS 1974. There was a case in my family at the time where my great aunt fostered a child and wanted to adopt her, but Ss deemed them too old and she was returned to her mother who killed her.

missjaysays · 29/12/2019 19:55

JonBenét Ramsey's murder in Dec 96

Then

Not a 'crime' IMO but Diana's death in Aug 97

ItsOurTime · 29/12/2019 19:56

James Bulger, I was 12.

Hushabyelullaby · 29/12/2019 19:57

I remember the bombing of Harrods by the IRA when I was about 7 or 8 I think, but only vaguely hearing about it on TV. I looked it up and it happened in 1983

The first detailed crime I remember is when the Estate Agent Suzy Lamplugh went missing, and it was all over the news, I was 10 almost 11, so 1986.

AdorableMisfit · 29/12/2019 20:09

The murder of Swedish prime minister Olof Palme in Feb 1986 (I grew up there).

Bedsheets4knickers · 29/12/2019 20:13

Lockerbie I remember just about
James bulger
Dunblane
Many more but those 3 I still feel horrified about to this day

foxyknoxy30 · 29/12/2019 20:17

It was Hungerford for me ,saw a documentary recently just awful

MsPepperPotts · 29/12/2019 20:21

John F Kennedy Assassination in 1963
then the Moors Murderers Ian Brady and Myra Hindley

BlueThursday · 29/12/2019 20:24

Lockerbie plane bombing in December 88 so I’d have been 6

MissRabbitNeedsAHoliday · 29/12/2019 20:26

Jessica Chapman & Holly Wells. I was also 10 at the time and think I found it more frightening because they were the same age as me.

iheartyoux · 29/12/2019 20:26

Holly and Jessica, the two young girls. So sad

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 29/12/2019 20:27

Suzy Lamplugh and then James Bulger and then Louise Woodward. Don't remember much in between but those 3 stick out a lot.

FelicityBeedle · 29/12/2019 20:28

Madeline McCann I think

BonnyConnie · 29/12/2019 20:28

9/11 I was 7 when it happened. I remember watching the second tower going down, I also remember some of the the anti-Islamic crime that occurred in the aftermath and the way our friends and family reacted to it either by becoming more radical or trying to down play their Muslim status like my mother telling my father to put us down as atheists in the census not longer after. I suppose it really effected me, In the best way possible. Still wish it hadn’t happened obviously.

Graphista · 29/12/2019 20:29

Suspect I’m a good bit older than many of you, mine is Susan maxwell I would’ve been about 10/11 and parents used it to warn of stranger danger.

Caroline Hogg also made an impression and my parents and relatives thought the cases were linked - seemingly long before the police did!

ScarletPower · 29/12/2019 20:31

I was aware of the Yorkshire Ripper (I was 6 when he was arrested) but the first one I actually remember remembering was the abduction and murder of Sarah Harper from Morley near Leeds as she was the same age as me, so 10/11

PorpentinaScamander · 29/12/2019 20:32

James Bulger. I was 8/9 and my brother 10/11. I remember looking at him and wondering how children his age could be killers Sad

Dunblane. I didn't realise at the time that that one incident changed gun laws here.

I remember rushing home every day to put 24hour news on and see if Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman had been found.

Rhys Jones. The programme about him a few years ago had me sobbing.
