I would say the first one I remember was Damilola Taylor briefly , I was about 7 and remember seeing it on the news.

OP posts:
TopOftheNaughtyList · 29/12/2019 20:35

The IRA bombings of 1973/1974

Ohffs66 · 29/12/2019 20:37

Marie Wilkes
Malcolm Green (the body in the bag killer)
Lynette White
Geraldine Palk

All around the same time-ish and mostly local to me. I lived on my own and was bloody terrified half the time! I remember one night my phone rang in the middle of a power cut and I was convinced it was the body in the bag killer trying to tempt me out into the hallway to kill me 😂

RandomMess · 29/12/2019 20:39

Just remembered an earlier one, assignation of John Lennon.

Violetroselily · 29/12/2019 20:39

Dunblane

I was same age as the children that were killed. My class wrote letters and sent them to the school Sad

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 29/12/2019 20:41

Yorkshire Ripper

Also the murder of PV Yvonne Fletcher. Which I seem to remember was televised at the time as the embassy was under siege

iswhois · 29/12/2019 20:43

Jamie Bulger

QueenofLouisiana · 29/12/2019 20:45

Susan Maxwell and Caroline Hogg. I would be a couple of years older than Caroline Hogg and remember a lot of lessons about staying with other people and not going with strangers.

dcib · 29/12/2019 20:47

Madeline McCann

LittleSweet · 29/12/2019 20:48

The Yorkshire ripper. I was quite little so I didn't know the full details. But I was really worried he'd murder my mum.

BikeRunSki · 29/12/2019 20:51

Gennette Tate

DimplesMcGee · 29/12/2019 20:51

The abduction of Shergar.... I was an animal mad four year old and obviously it stuck in my mind because it was a horse!

Echobelly · 29/12/2019 20:53

Maybe the Brighton Bombing? I was aware vaguely of IRA attacks before, but my parents were due to attend that conference (though not stay at the hotel) and our local MP, who my parents knew, was killed. It was not long before I turned 8.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 29/12/2019 20:53

Lockerbie. I was 9 years old and we lived about 25 minutes away. It was horrifying seeing it on the news and everyone talking about it. I felt a sadness and fear I hadn't had before as I had a cosy upbringing and lived in a very quiet village. I don't think I had really watched the news prior to that.

LittleSweet · 29/12/2019 20:53

Enthusiasm I remember seeing her hat on the road. I was so upset.

Episcomama · 29/12/2019 20:57

The three girls who (it turned out) had been murdered by Robert Black. Sarah Maxwell, Caroline Hogg and Sarah Harper. I remember being at A & E and seeing a poster on the wall. I was around the same age as those poor girls.

eatsleepmoverepeat · 29/12/2019 20:57

James Bulger here too. Vividly remember sitting in my Nan’s front room watching the divers searching

Sodamncaughtinthemiddle · 29/12/2019 21:01

Suzanne Capper - just so sad and awful.

BluebellsareBlue · 29/12/2019 21:03

Susan Maxwell and Caroline Hogg are my first memories. Aged about 7

JMoore · 29/12/2019 21:13

Probably Marianne Bachmeier shooting the murderer of her daughter in the courtroom. I grew up in Germany and was about 8 years old at the time. Anna Bachmeier, the murdered girl, would have been around my age.

lboogy · 29/12/2019 21:22

Soham murders . I was about the same age as those poor girls.

lljkk · 29/12/2019 21:22

Charles Manson gang murders. :(

TheWashingMachine · 29/12/2019 21:28

Lindy Chamberlain - aka dingos ate my baby woman

TravellingSpoon · 29/12/2019 21:29

Probably Rose and Fred West.

My dad used to bring the Sun home from work and I would read it cover to cover, and this is the first big crime story I remember.

Ceefax101 · 29/12/2019 21:31

Suzy Lamplugh. I remember seeing “Mr Kipper” in the newspaper and being terrified.

Lindy Chamberlain - aka dingos ate my baby woman

Could you put that any more offensively do you think?
