No not at all- I really think you get over the cgi just as in the stage show you get over seeing them as people dressed as cats- well I did anyway!

bengalcat · 21/12/2019 16:30

Saw it today - enjoyed it but I do like the musical , choreography and cats ! Loved the way their ears and rails moved although DD called it ‘ freaky ‘ . It was a cosy screen and a couple of ladies came with their four kids - the two under threes were crawling around after the first hour and periodically miaowed much to our amusement .

Going to see it tonight. I have a cinema pass so I'm of the opinion that, if it's bad, it hasn't actually cost me anything to go and see it.
Never got to see the stage show (but wanted to), so no preconceived ideas about it to start with.

SiliconHeaven · 21/12/2019 18:09

I really enjoyed it. I’m a big musical fan though, I think that’s the key to liking it or not. All the ‘over-sexualised’ nonsense says more about the reviewers than the movie 😀

FruitcakeOfHate · 21/12/2019 18:18

I'm going with DD on Xmas Eve to see it! Since I'm coming out of the closet with my love of Grease2, I may as well confess, I also liked the film version of The Pirates of Penzance. Now, NO ONE can tell me that this film version of Cat is worse than that! Grin

FloraGreysteel · 21/12/2019 18:24

The trailer reminded me of the "Where's your head at?" video!

MysweetAudrina · 21/12/2019 18:30

Myself and dd11 enjoyed it.

redexpat · 21/12/2019 18:42

I saw it in the west end on a school trip but got a migraine so only remember The railway cat song and Jellicle cats. Saw it years later with DH and was bored stiff.

Has anyone seen the cats episode of crazy ex girlfriend? V funny with many of the same criticisms on tjis thread ie no plot.

PreseaCombatir · 21/12/2019 18:55

I went today with DD. I have never seen the musical, I hadn’t even seen the trailer! We were going to see maleficent 2, but it’s not showing anymore, so we got tickets for this instead.

Initially, when I first saw the cats, I was so freaked out, I didn’t understand what was going on, however, by the end, I didn’t think the cats looked creepy at all anymore, and I got really into it.
I’m presuming this was the ‘second half’ that people say is better in the musical (magician cat song, Taylor swift song, j hud song) (I hope I will not be shamed for not knowing the names of songs/characters 😂

I feel like I want to actually rewatch it, as it might make a bit more sense now.

Oh no, what happened post credits? We left, so missed it

SinkGirl · 21/12/2019 20:42

Still chuckling at the idea that film critics don’t like it because it’s “too artsy” 😂

I used to be a film critic and worked with many - they loved artsy. Cats is not artsy, unless you think artsy just means no plot and no substance.

The poor, unfinished, bizarre CGI seems to be the main issue, along with the fact that ALW musicals are generally seen as lowest common denominator crap by critics (I can’t really disagree, I think he’s awful).

Wilmalovescake · 21/12/2019 21:00

Well I quite enjoyed it! The CGI was annoying and distracting at times but the dancing was beautiful. Ian McKellan made me cry. What an actor he is.

Ingridla · 21/12/2019 23:33

I saw the stage musical for my 20th birthday and LOVED it! Honestly don't know if I'd enjoy it as much now (I'm 42) The reviews are hilarious.. I bet it's a marmite thing

AnneElliott · 21/12/2019 23:35

I saw it tonight. It was fine - but not great. The CGI was good though - the way their ears moved was amazing!

Not much of a story I thought, but dancing was very good.

Dieu · 21/12/2019 23:41

I thought you'd booked a holiday to somewhere rife with stray cats!

tapdancingmum · 22/12/2019 22:38

I loved it. It made me laugh and cry. I had no preconceived ideas as I didn't really know what it was about but enjoyed it so much I want to see it again. The cinema was busy and nobody left saying it was awful.

Glitterfisher · 22/12/2019 23:12

I saw it Friday, I thought it was beautiful. I think you have to like to musical to like it as it's a fairly unusual musical.

The cast were amazing, the dancing was incredible. I love the musical anyway but mainly for the dancing as it's a lot harder to hear every word at the theatre so watching on the big screen meant you could hear more of the 'story'.

If you aren't into that sort of musical then don't bother to go and watch it, honestly people are so bloody miserable!

mynameiswah · 23/12/2019 16:25

Saw it last night and enjoyed it! Jennifer Hudson made me cry, she really belts her lungs out. The acting was superb in general, esp Hudson, Dench and Hayward. The dancing was beautiful, esp the white cat. Though I wish she had a longer ballet solo, seeing as she is a principal ballerina in real life.

The script could have been better though, to bond us with the characters from the start. The plot doesn't really kick in till halfway through so you're left wondering what's going on in the beginning.

The CGI was better than I was led to believe, though some cats were better rendered and more 'cat-like' than others. Also I wish the dancers were given paws over their bare feet, or ballet shoes. Would've looked cuter.

I stayed till the end to see what happens post-credit, but nothing happens? Did my cinema cut something out?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 23/12/2019 16:30

The critics weren’t in favour of The Greatest Showman and looked what happened there

The critics were right!

I saw the Cats trailer and thought I might like it then read the reviews and I'll wait until it's on Sky.

lovemenorca · 23/12/2019 17:09

The reviews for Greatest showman and Cats aren’t comparable!
The former got a mixed bag
The latter has been decimated

It really didn't deserve such bad reviews though. I blame the director, for releasing a bad first trailer in the first place, and then subsequently tweaking things according to the "internet opinion". Is that how films are made nowadays?! It doesn't seem like he was confident of his own artistic vision or something.
