I watched the trailer last night after reading about the terrible reviews.

First, I couldn't understand why Taylor Swift as a cat has two enormous "breasts" somewhere up by her collarbone.

First, she is not shaped like that, and second, no cat on earth has that.

Second, I couldn't understand why every shot of a female cat was in some kind of sexual/provocative pose, and every shot of a male cat was being all strong and non-sexual.

It's one of the most uncomfortable and perverse things I've seen.

Then I read some headline today where someone said it was one step away from watching a cat "orgy", whch is spot on!

GrouchyKiwi · 20/12/2019 14:12

The costuming and CGI are definitely too uncanny valley for me to watch it. It has an amazing cast, though.

Devereux1 · 20/12/2019 14:17

Regarding the amazing cast - I had another uncomfortable feeling too when I watched it. I watched Judi Dench etc, and felt really cringe and embarrased, thinking how very sad it was that someone so great she she, at her age, had found herself in such a wierd sexual, terrible film at this stage in her life. Sad

Yorkietherabbit I also walked out of Cats at the interval, the only show I've ever not stayed til the end for. A friend asked if id like to see the movie and was quite taken back at the ferocity of my response!

Skinnychip · 20/12/2019 14:25

I thought the trailer and pics looked bloody weird but now tempted to see if its as bad as its made out. I want to take DD to see little women, but I cant see DS (or DH) wanting to see either film!

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 20/12/2019 14:28

I also HATED Cats the musical-but it's interesting how you get in all these little echo chambers with everyone praising it and you wonder if it's you-I am glad I'm not the only one with good taste.

The trailer looks awful and if all those stars can't garner it any decent reviews I think it must be dire. Cringeworthy

Patroclus · 20/12/2019 14:46

Supposedly the animating was finished 36 hours before the release or something

SinkGirl · 20/12/2019 14:49

Best review line so far:

Cats is the worst thing to happen to cats since dogs

I used to write for film magazines and right now I really wish I still did 😂

Patroclus · 20/12/2019 14:50

TS Eliot isnt it, so its probably all about growing old and the death of civilisation, religion and some weird anti semitism, all hidden in some singing cats.

Mrsjayy · 20/12/2019 15:10

I read that the rest of it was "by some bins" Grin

All the cats have to try and win a place in cat heaven but all done with jazz hands to make it cheerier.

wellthatwasthat · 20/12/2019 15:13

I don't know whether I dare go and see it or not.

VisionQuest · 20/12/2019 15:31

I used to go to the theatre a lot when I was a kid. I remember hating Cats, especially Elaine Paige warbling along...ugh no thanks.

Thedeadwood · 20/12/2019 15:47

It looks terrifying. I love this collection of the reviews

Travis1 · 20/12/2019 15:47

I can't wait to see it Grin

AllYouGoodGoodPeople · 20/12/2019 15:48

DioneTheDiabolist I saw a review where the reviewer said he wasn't sure he'd like it because he wasn't a cat person, but now he'd seen the film he wasn't sure he was a film person either Grin

nowaypose · 20/12/2019 15:58

I saw the trailer the other day when I took my DD’s to see Frozen 2. It looks absolutely terrifying and the cast is just bizarre. Taylor Swift and Judi Dench? Wtf.

CountFosco · 20/12/2019 16:19

Saw the trailer when we went to see Frozen 2. I enjoyed Frozen 2 (and my 12 year old loved it) but Cats looked very freaky, agree with the PP it's deep in Uncanny Valley Territory just like The Polar Express.

81Byerley · 20/12/2019 16:23

@AllYouGoodGoodPeople Hahaha!

Speekachu · 20/12/2019 16:27

I've seen it this afternoon.
It's not quite as horrific as the reviews make out, but not far off.

Actually, yes it is.

wellthatwasthat · 20/12/2019 16:28

I like cats. I like musicals. And I like ballet, especially the dancers from the Royal Ballet. And Dame Judi is a national treasure.

But...

Confused
QueenOfTheAndals · 20/12/2019 16:28

I saw it today. It's weird but the reaction to it has been somewhat overwrought. If you enjoyed the stage show then you'll probably be fine. Most of the cast do a decent job singing and the dancing certainly can't be faulted. Tbh I'm not sure how else it could've been translated to the screen!

wellthatwasthat · 20/12/2019 16:29

I'm going to have to take one for the MN team and go and see it aren't I?

notacooldad · 20/12/2019 16:31

I really dont fancy t but my friend really wants to go with me. I'm hoping its not as bad as the trailers!

notacooldad · 20/12/2019 16:33

The critics weren’t in favour of The Greatest Showman and looked what happened there
I thought the crocs were right!
🤣🤣🤣
