Disclaimer; I haven't seen the film. (Have seen the show.) Just going off the trailer and JH's performance on Strictly. -And James Corden being in it
The stage show is cats introducing themselves by singing poems and doing bendy dancing. There's a very thin back story there as an excuse for a plot but really, that's it. Cats, TS Eliot, bendy dancing.
As a stage production it sort of works because the costumes and make up are amazing, the dancing is impressive and the way the stage is set up was original, when it first came out, which drew a lot of attention. It's not my cup of tea musical wise, but I can see why seeing it in the theatre is loved by lots of people.
As a film? The cats are rat sized and they've used too much digital trickery (don't know the real term) so they're neither human nor cats or even humans pretending to be cats. They left the female actors boobs there so is it a 'furry' thing? But taking them away would've been questionable too so...I don't know. It's weird.
Also Jennifer Hudson is a fantastic singer but her Memory is so boring. It's no Elaine Paige (EP will be delighted!
)
All that said, plenty of films have been torn apart by critics and loved by audiences. I reckon it has a good chance of being a cult hit.
I'll probably go and see it.
