Tories please tell me the positives

I have to admit I’m feeling pretty bleak this morning, but I recognise that I am living in a left wing echo chamber.

I would really appreciate your views on why the result is good and how our country will improve. Please tell me how the NHS and schools and vulnerable people will be protected.

I’m not being goady, I would honestly really appreciate some positivity.

We live in a democracy. We can say what we like about the result and you’re welcome to challenge it.

But you can’t stop discussions.

Mrsemcgregor · 13/12/2019 11:16

Noeuf the point of my thread is to listen to and understand other people’s opinions. Not to catastrophize. No one is making you join in if you don’t want to be part of the conversation.

Squidsister · 13/12/2019 11:17

Also thank you OP for starting this thread. I would like to hear some positives. With Brexit and climate change and now another Tory government things seem so bleak - but I need to try and focus on what good might come out of this ....

Interested in this thread?

I'm not trying to stop discussion. I'm just commenting. It's pathetic, all this hysteria over a vote.

Squidsister · 13/12/2019 11:25

Noeuf what actually is the point of your post? If you can’t offer something useful please post elsewhere.

dreamingofsun · 13/12/2019 11:26

business will be happy, which means there will be jobs. Brexit will be sorted which means government will be able to work on other things like education, health, schooling. there wont be the really wacky policies that labour suggested (eg taking over broadband supply......this would have taken years to sort when companies would have been supplying BB instead). Work and personal responsibility will be respected.....so people wont get loads of benefits by having tonnes of kids. Inflation should remain low. the pound should remain high. pension funds should be ok so people can retire. there are lots of positives.

NiteFlights · 13/12/2019 11:27

Not a Conservative voter. I agree with SalrycLuxx’s list, although I’m not overly hopeful that they will invest much in the justice system, but it would certainly be a good thing if they do.

Mrsemcgregor · 13/12/2019 11:27

Noeuf the whole point is not to be hysterical... literally why I started the thread.

To be clear, I want Tory voter to share the good in the next 5 years. Some people have very constructively contributed to this thread and hopefully will have brought some comfort or at least something for people to consider.

Like it or not some people really care about their politics. I’m sure if there had been a Corbyn landslide a lot of tories would be devastated today and very concerned.

OP posts:
Waspnest · 13/12/2019 11:32

If you're in need of another positive, the pound is up this morning

That’s only mainly a benefit if you’re betting on the financial markets.

Not really. I'm not an economist but if the pound is up it means that companies from around the world think the UK is worth investing in which is good news from the point of view of trade talks. Plus a rise in the value of stocks and shares means pensions are worth more. I'm not a fan of BJ (huge understatement) but actually I'm willing to give him a chance to move the Conservative party closer to the centre. I think if he screws it up, the Conservatives will be savaged in the next GE.

Skyejuly · 13/12/2019 11:33

Couldn't really give a shit about the pound.

Squidsister · 13/12/2019 11:34

Thanks dreaming - I voted Remain but now would just like Brexit sorted so as you say the government can focus on it’s day job i.e. running the country! I think many things have been left to crumble because the government has been so focused on Brexit. My worry is that even now Brexit will take so long and we’ll be in this limbo for years to come.

Waspnest · 13/12/2019 11:37

Couldn't really give a shit about the pound.

Well you should do because it is those £ that provide jobs and pay for public services.

SouthWestmom · 13/12/2019 11:40

My point? That it's yet another thread about how terrible the outcome is and I'm just injecting some reality. But you know I don't recall having to explain myself before posting.

Squidsister · 13/12/2019 11:42

I think a positive will be Corbyn going - I don’t dislike him but I don’t feel he has provided an effective opposition to the Tory party. A good democracy needs a strong opposition party to keep the ruling party on their toes and keep a check on the more extreme sections. Corbyn yes had the moral high ground but he just didn’t provide clear and strong opposition in my opinion (his woolly stance on Brexit, for example). I am really hoping Labour will get a good leader out of this....

pettswoodmumof3 · 13/12/2019 11:46

There is more certainty now. The FTSE 250 has gone up over 4 per cent - largely UK based companies. The pound is rising. If there is more certainty (ie Bojo's deal will get through and no deal brexit is off the table for good), foreign investment will increase. Economics could improve. It is the dithering and uncertainty and political stale mate that kills morale. The fight is over. Brexit has won and is a certainty.
Bojo clearly isn't as stupid as everyone made out. I do not personally like the man, but his strategy has been excellent and I wasn't that disappointed with him as mayor of London. He has played a very good game of chess and I am so disappointed in the Labour party. The sad part is that all my friends who were moderate Labour voters have predicted this outcome. I am hoping the Labour party will sort itself out now. Young, strong centrist please with a clear vision. We really need someone strong in opposition to make sure Brexit is delivered in the best possible way.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 13/12/2019 11:47

@Skyejuly you're moaning about NHS funding then say you don't care about the pound?

Are you for real?

NiteFlights · 13/12/2019 11:47

My point? That it's yet another thread about how terrible the outcome is and I'm just injecting some reality.

Well not really, you’re ‘injecting’ your opinion that this thread is somehow ‘hysterical’. Why don’t you engage with OP’s sensible question and tell us some positives? There are some, as is clear from the thread.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 13/12/2019 11:49

@Noeuf this is the most level-headed conservational post-election post you'll find.

OP and many other posters are genuinely interested in the positive side of the result. They're not being goady. They want to feel better about it.

horse4course · 13/12/2019 11:55

@Pinkyyy immigrants don't increase unemployment. It's not like there are a set number of jobs, people coming in to fill gaps boosts the economy and creates more jobs.

Immigrants were generally doing jobs UK nationals didn't want to do, or where there were skills gaps like health, construction, IT.

Also the Tories have already admitted immigration will not fall as a result of brexit. Trade deals will come with quotas of workers from India, China, Brazil etc. So instead of EU migrants (who tend to return after a while), you'll have people from poorer economies who are less likely to head home. Probably not the result most brexit voters wanted.

horse4course · 13/12/2019 11:57

@GiveHerHellFromUs I agree Brexit now looks unstoppable, but it's not true that this was a verdict from the public.

The majority of people voted for pro-remain parties, but FPTP means this didn't translate into parliamentary representation being pro-remain. The pro-remain vote was split.

INeedNewShoes · 13/12/2019 11:58

Yes how sad no free broadband but just get on with it.

I feel confident in saying that no one on this thread gives a fuck about free broadband.

I rolled my eyes when this policy came to light. Really really stupid doesn't even cover it and was one of the many Labour idiocies that made me feel unable to vote for them.

People want reassurance that if they have a heart attack that their healthcare will be immediately available at no cost, or if they have a nervous breakdown that mental healthcare will be readily available (or even better - MH care before they reach crisis point). I very much doubt that anyone is crying over broadband this morning.

horse4course · 13/12/2019 12:08

There is lots to be depressed about. Not least tories silencing discussion of electoral reform and Russian interference. And they're proposing to change the processes for judicial review and I think judge selection which could have lasting awful consequences.

Positives -
Johnson now has to own brexit, he can't blame it on someone else, and it remains a sack of shit. They've got a time bomb on their hands when voters in deprived areas don't suddenly live in a land of milk and honey.

The ERG now no longer hold the government to ransom. They had disproportionate power in a hung parliament and forced the Tories to be more right wing. Likewise the DUP have done badly and won't have so much power.

The young have engaged quite a lot with Corbyn and see the Tories for what they are. Especially on environmental issues where Tories literally don't show up. The average age to begin voting Tory is rising. As boomers start to die off, the tide could turn.

We'll hopefully finally get shot of Corbyn and have a competent opposition again.

The BBC has shown itself to be partial (Cameron stiffed management full of his chums) and people are wising up to how skewed information can be on social media.

ODFOkaren · 13/12/2019 12:10

I work in care. I am the only British person out of 24 staff in the home. The rest are an every changing see of faces who come from EU countries to work for a few Months at a time.

The job is shit. The pay is shit. I do as I have no choice. No one really wants to do it and we can’t recruit - they jut work us into the ground and expect us to do 60 hour weeks. They certainty don’t pay more because no one wants to do the job.

Skyejuly · 13/12/2019 12:11

Of course I care about the pound. I said it almost tongue in cheek but I know reading online does not always reflect that! I just mean that I am feeling so sad about the result that the pound is not easing things right now. It fluctuates all the time lately. No doubt it will drop again as we prepare to leave EU.

Mrsemcgregor · 13/12/2019 12:12

Free broadband, the 4 day week etc etc were daft policies that I really don’t think anyone would have been persuaded by.
