Anyone else devastated by the election result? Please can someone tell me it'll be ok?

And please no Tory gloating, I've seen enough of that on FB.

Whatever you may think of the Tories and their supporters, I’ll wager that Labour will not get another shot in Government until they eradicate Momentum from their ranks and return to a more centrist position.

Katharinblum · 14/12/2019 09:42

I live in a northern town that now has 2 out of 3 Tory mps and a now Tory dominated council. Long history of socioeconomic deprivation and hit even more by austerity. I think if people visited from the Home Counties they’d be pretty shocked at how bad things are up here. Different world sadly.

Thing is locally nobody’s blaming the tories for the lack of meaningful investment, the swathing cuts to already struggling, overburdened services - it’s the previously labour run council that’s taking the flak. Maybe they were complacent and not proactive, but the drop in funding from central government has been huge and still not over to be honest. But to read the hatred directed at labour or ‘liebour’ as they are called in the local newspaper or on Facebook pages is so sad, it’s like the last 10 years has nothing to do with Boris Johnson and his party.

I’ve seen posts saying they voted leave and now Tories. They are working in a minimum wage job, rely on universal credit and have posted they are hoping for a hard Brexit - they haven’t a clue how different things are going to get.

lovemenorca · 14/12/2019 12:05

* they haven’t a clue how different things are going to get.*

Things really really aren’t going to change for someone in minimum wage job on benefits. Seriously. You will disagree but let’s just see how much that person’s life has changed - for the good or bad in a year’s time.
I suspect there will be no change whatsoever.

ForalltheSaints · 14/12/2019 12:24

It will be Ok for some (largely in London and the South East, with jobs above the minimum wage, with mortgages or owning homes outright), but not for many.

There will be some certainty (we will leave the political institutions of the EU on 31st January, MEPs such as Nigel Farage will be out of a job).

Many people would never vote for a Labour party with Mr Corbyn as leader, and probably not for many of the policies put forward.

Peregrina · 14/12/2019 13:52

I certainly don't see any change for the better.

Parker231 · 14/12/2019 14:11

@lovemenorca - a lot will if there is a no deal Brexit and the trade experts don’t think the new agreements can be done in time.

j712adrian · 14/12/2019 14:22

Two things may help:

1.it is a deliberate politicial strategy of populists to make things seem worse than they are

  1. Not sure what's worse, the situation or worrying about the situation.

Put those two things together = misery.

Ihavethefinalsleigh · 14/12/2019 14:28

At least the principles of democracy have been upheld.

EllenRipley · 14/12/2019 14:41

The fact that there's lots of Tory voters on here asking 'what are you so worried about' and telling us the Tories have said 'the NHS isn't for sale so it won't be' -and whining about all the vitriol that's been directed at them - just proves the point they're trying to argue against.

I can't work out if it's wilful ignorance, or just ignorance.

Bottom line is, if BJ the man, and everything he represents (not least his & his cronies over-privileged background) appeals to you, and if you can't or won't understand why Tory policies are victimising thousands and thousands of people, then there's actually no point debating the issues.

Brexit isn't the entirety of 'the bigger picture'. Like all the Americans, middle and lower class, who support Trump, your selective, blinkered reasoning for a continued Tory government with BJ at the helm condones and fuels a world of retrograde shit. It'll affect others before it affects you, but it will affect you - or more probably your kids & grandkids. But as long as you're ok right now, you'll defend your choices.

I'm Scottish and was always undecided about independence. It presents a lot of problems. But it's a way out, a hopeful prospect I'm now resigned to.

absopugginglutely · 14/12/2019 15:12

I’m beyond devastated but have signed up to volunteer in a food bank and am going to volunteer in a local early years setting to get them off the ground with phonics (I’m a part time primary teacher)

If I feel I can do something to help with what the government won’t then it eases my mind a little bit!

Helmlover1 · 14/12/2019 15:34

I also feel sick, especially after seeing Damien Green on LBC supporting an insurance backed health service- 24 hours after the election! The tories also promised they would repeal the fox hunting ban if they won a majority so looks like this barbaric practice will also be reintroduced. Awful times to be living in.

WellErrr · 14/12/2019 16:55

The tories also promised they would repeal the fox hunting ban if they won a majority

No they didn’t.

lovemenorca · 14/12/2019 17:15

* The tories also promised they would repeal the fox hunting ban if they won a majority*

They promised a vote
FFS the ignorance

lovemenorca · 14/12/2019 17:17

And in the manifesto they state “no change to the hunting ban”

Helmlover1 · 14/12/2019 19:08

Why did they need to promise a vote? It’s a barbaric, outdated practice that most people disagree with, but obviously there is a call for it within his party to bring it back, hence the need to promise a vote.

Interestingly BJ voted against the ban in 2004 and has wrote previously about how he ‘enjoys’ a hunt. So if you think the tories and their leader are some sort of animal welfare heroes, you’re very naive.
